How to Navigate Epic Universe Like a Pro

Planning your first visit to Epic Universe? 🎢 My 7-step touring plan covers the best rides, dining spots, and night shows to make your day unforgettable. From Donkey Kong to Harry Potter, this guide helps you maximize every moment at Universal Orlando’s newest park.

I’ve been to Epic Universe quite a few times, and it's quickly become one of my favorite parks in Orlando! But I’ll tell you right now—if you don’t have Early Park Admission, you’re starting the day at a disadvantage. But that doesn’t mean you can’t win.”

Today, I’m sharing my personal strategy for touring Epic Universe without Early Entry.

Map of Epic Universe at Universal Orlando

#1 Start of Day: Celestial Park at Rope Drop

I always begin my day right at the gates of Celestial Park, arriving about 40 minutes prior to park opening.

This allows me time to park, walk to the gate, and clear security without long waits. Universal will allow you into Celestial Park even before the park officially opens.

This is the hub of Epic Universe, so I take some time to walk around and take it all in. Oh, and don’t skip the fountain show.

Most guests breeze right by, but they’re beautiful and timed to music. And come back to watch them at night with the Helios Grand Hotel in the background.

You’ll get some great photos and videos here.

Now, when the park opens, most guests make the same mistake: They rush toward Super Nintendo World or the Harry Potter Ministry ride.

Don’t do that. Hotel guests with Early Park Admission flood those lands before you’re even allowed in.

By the time you get there, those rides will already have wait times well over 150 minutes. The ministry will be more like 180 minutes when the park opens.

If you’re concerned about long waits, I suggest you see my tips for Epic Universe Express Pass here.

So instead of getting frustrated, I do something else. I go for Stardust Racers.

Plan your day using my full tour of Epic Universe video:

This is Epic Universe’s flagship coaster—a high-speed, dual-launch ride that soars above Celestial Park.

If you’re here at rope drop, you can typically ride it with only a 10–20 minute wait. And trust me, it’s worth it.

I always try to ride this twice—once in the morning, and again at night when the park lights are glowing. It’s a completely different experience.

But heads up: after sunset, the entire park seems to migrate here. The line can spike dramatically, and they will close the queue early if it gets too long. So lock this one in early.

If you’re worried about lines, I suggest you read my article on using Express Pass at Epic Universe.

#2 Isle of Berk (Mid-Morning)

After Stardust, I immediately head to Isle of Berk, home to the “How to Train Your Dragon” attractions.

This land is designed with families in mind—but don’t let that fool you.

There are some thrilling attractions here, and the entire space feels vibrant and energetic.

Now if meeting Toothless is high on your priority list, head there first when you enter Berk.

This meet and greet is seriously impressive—Toothless is fully animated and interactive, but the wait gets long fast.

I’ve seen it hit 55 minutes as soon as the park opens. So if this is a must-do for you or your kids, knock it out early before you start riding.

Epic Universe Isle of Berk

Isle of Berk at Epic Universe is based on the film, How to Train Your Dragon

Next stop? Hiccup’s Wing Gliders. This is a fast-moving family coaster and a favorite among both kids and adults.

It’s also incredibly popular, so I try to hit it before the midday rush. Wait times hover around 60-70 minutes in the morning.

If you’re up for some chaotic fun, Dragon Racer Rally is a wild ride that lets you control your own spinning dragon.

It’s great for families and surprisingly intense if you max out the controls. The line here is usually shorter than Wing Gliders, and it’s a solid second or third stop.

If I’m up for getting soaked, I’ll jump on Fyre Drill next. It’s a playful, interactive boat battle where you basically spray water at everyone and everything.

The line will be under 30 minutes most of the morning, so it’s a great pick right now. Just keep in mind you’ll be very wet for a while.

Ponchos can help, but even your shoes will get soaked.

And then there’s The Untrainable Dragon Show—a solid mix of animatronics, puppetry, and live performance.

Personally, I save this one for later in the afternoon when the heat sets in and I need an air-conditioned break.

But if you’re already in the area and don’t plan to return, catch the next showtime you can.

#3 Lunch and Rides in Dark Universe (Early Afternoon)

By early afternoon, it’s time to shift into something darker—literally. Dark Universe is the moody, monster-filled land of Epic Universe, and it’s one of the most atmospheric parts of the park.

This is my favorite portal in Epic Universe. I like to hit Curse of the Werewolf first.

It’s family-friendly so the line builds quickly once guests finish Nintendo World and begin to head in this direction.

It’s short and punchy—and the barn has a fun surprise, so keep your eyes peeled as you pass through.

But the main event here is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. This is my favorite dark ride in the entire park. Massive sets, brilliant effects, and an absolutely wild story.

I would say this is the second flagship attraction in the park after Battle at the Ministry.

And surprisingly, the wait times are usually very manageable, 10 to 35 minutes throughout most of the day.

By now, you’ll be thinking about lunch. I always recommend Das Stakehaus.it’s themed like a vampire steakhouse and one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had at a theme park.

Das Steakhouse at Epic universe, showing a vampire with stakes through his heart

The theming is top-notch, and the food is just as impressive. Be sure to walk around the dining room—there are exhibits and story elements tucked into every corner.

If Das Stakehaus is full or too intense, Burning Blade Tavern is another solid pick. It’s more of a bar, but they serve light bites and have an amazing vibe.

And if you’d rather keep it light and breezy, Pizza Moon over in Celestial Park is just a short walk away.

You might hop on the Constellation Carousel, which, honestly, is more stunning at night, but still charming in the daylight.

There’s rarely a long line here, but it's something to do if you need a break from waiting in long lines.

#4 Afternoon: Wizarding World – Ministry of Magic

After lunch, I head over to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. Now, here’s where this touring strategy really shines.

By mid-afternoon, the Early Park Admission crowd has moved on, and this part of the park becomes slightly more manageable.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it—the lines here are still long. But compared to the 3-hour waits earlier in the day, you’ll be saving a huge chunk of time by arriving now.

You can use the Universal Orlando mobile app to check wait times.

Epic Universe Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Epic Unviverse

The main draw is Battle at the Ministry. It’s the park’s flagship dark ride—epic in scale, loaded with effects, and full of jaw-dropping visuals.

And while the wait might still be 135 minutes, this strategy means you’re not burning your morning here like everyone else did. That’s a win.

But here’s the thing: this ride goes down—a lot. It’s a technical marvel, but not always a reliable one. I’ve seen it close multiple times a day.

Even if the app says it’s down for good, don’t give up. Keep checking. I’ve seen it come back online with zero warning. You just have to stay flexible.

While you’re in this portal, take some time to enjoy the world around you. Harry Potter Ministry of Magic is loaded with incredible detail.

If you have an interactive wand, now’s the time to use it.

Candy shop inside Harry Potter at Epic Universe. The store is bright pink with whimsical displays in the windows.

There are magical effects hidden all over the land—just follow the crowds of Harry Potter fans waving sticks at windows.

I usually skip the Le Cirque Arcanus show. I’m not a Harry Potter fan, so this show doesn’t interest me.

It’s a great show if you love Harry Potter, or need some air conditioning; otherwise, skip it and continue on.

#5 Evening: Super Nintendo World

As the day winds down, I head to Super Nintendo World. This land is beautiful in the late afternoon light—and even better at dusk.

Super Nintendo World at Epic Universe at night, showing the castle in the background

It feels like you’ve stepped straight into a video game. And here’s the good news: by now, the early rush has passed, and wait times start to dip.

First up: Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. This ride looks incredible, and the queue is one of the best in the park—especially if you're a longtime Nintendo fan. That said… the ride itself? Slightly overrated.

Honestly, I think walking through the queue might be the best part.

Load area of Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness Showing Guest Getting on ride vehicle

Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness

Wait times should be around 100 minutes now. After that, I always go for Mine Cart Madness—the Donkey Kong coaster.

This one is worth the hype. It’s fast, bouncy, and has some really clever effects. The wait here can still hover around 60–70 minutes, even in the evening, but it’s often less than what you’d face earlier in the day.

For something slower-paced, don’t skip Yoshi’s Adventure.

This gentle ride gives you an elevated view of the entire land. Even people who hate rides usually enjoy this one.

Wait times are usually between 10 and 30 minutes now, compared to 70 minutes first thing in the morning.

Now, let’s talk about the hidden gem: Shadow Showdown.

Most guests don’t even know this exists. After you complete three Power-Up Band mini-games, you unlock access to this interactive finale.

You literally use your own shadow to battle villains on a massive screen—it’s clever, fun, and strangely under-the-radar.

If you’ve got kids or you just like cool tech, it’s totally worth the time and the price of the Power-Up Band.

And dinner? Toadstool Café. No question. The theme is adorable, and the food is adorable. (To help you decide where to eat, see my Epic Universe restaurant menus page)

I love what Universal did here - I mean, look at this toad pizza bowl. And the Toad animations in the windows are hilarious.

Watch carefully—those animations go way beyond just looping characters waving at you. Stick around long enough, and you might catch something special.

If Toadstool Cafe is too cute for you, there’s a French-style quick service café in Wizarding World I’ll be honest—I can’t pronounce the name to save my life.

But you’ll know it when you see it. Worth a stop.

The Oak and Barrel Barbecue Restaurant in Celestial Park is another solid choice.

#6 Final Hour: Re-Rides, Night Views, and That Perfect Shot

The last hour before the park closes is prime time. The crowds thin out, the lights come on, and Epic Universe starts to glow in a way that’s hard to describe.

This is when I go back and re-ride a favorite. Sometimes it’s Stardust Racers, if I can beat the rush. Other times, I’ll wander through the Dark Universe just to take it all in.

Burning Blade Tavern windmill catching on fire as part of the show at Epic Universe

If you’re in Dark Universe at night, do not miss the Burning Blade Tavern. Every 15 minutes, the windmill outside erupts into flames—actual fire.

I don’t know why it’s so satisfying to watch a windmill burst into flames, but trust me... it is.

For photos and video, I always head back to Celestial Park for the nighttime fountain show.

I position myself so that the Helios Grand Hotel is in the background. The view is spectacular, and the reflections off the water make it even better.

Just keep in mind: Even though the park closes at 9 p.m., some ride queues close early. They’ll stop letting guests in if the line is too long. So if you’ve got one more ride in mind, don’t wait too long to queue up.

Recap of My Touring Strategy

Here’s how my day usually plays out—roughly by time. I’ll post a link to my article where you can bookmark this recap and take it with you into the park.

  • 10:00 am – Celestial Park: Stardust Racers, Carousel, fountains

  • 10:30 am – Isle of Berk: Meet Toothless, Wing Gliders, Fyre Drill, Dragon Racers

  • 12:30 pm – Dark Universe: Monsters Unchained, Werewolf coaster, lunch

  • 2:30 pm – Wizarding World: Battle at the Ministry, wand play

  • 5:00 pm – Super Nintendo World: Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Shadow Showdown, Yoshi, dinner.

  • After 8:00 pm – Walk-throughs, Burning Blade and fountain shows, last re-ride

#7 Final Thoughts and Bonus Tips

This plan is not meant to be a minute-by-minute itinerary for touring Epic Universe.

There are too many moving parts and something will likely hijack your day - a ride closure, thunderstorm, someone needs to rest for a while, etcetera. This is a general guide to point you in the right direction for your day.

So to pull this off, you’ve got to stay flexible.

Afternoon thunderstorms? Yeah, they’ll shut down 90% of the park in an instant. Just find cover, grab a snack, and wait it out. Most storms clear within the hour.

And keep an eye on the app—especially for attractions like Battle at the Ministry. That ride is unreliable, but incredible if you catch it when it’s running.

Don’t give up just because it says “closed.”

Lastly, if Universal ever sends you a post-visit survey, tell them this: Please keep Epic Universe open later.

This park is stunning at night, and closing at 9:00 p.m. is a massive missed opportunity.

So there you have it—my complete, battle-tested strategy for conquering Epic Universe without Early Park Admission.

I’ll post a pinned comment with all the Epic Universe height requirements in case you’re traveling with kids.

If you’ve got your own tips or if this strategy worked for you, let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear how your visit went.

Walt Disney World's Lightning Lane Multi-Pass: The Ultimate Pro-Level Strategy Guide

Don't get fooled by the basics! This LLMP guide reveals the "rolling 3 rule," the "burner" selections, how to master the "refresh game," and the best parks for saving time at WDW. Your ultimate advantage starts here.

Top 10 Lightning Lane Multi-Pass Strategies

10. 📅 Master Your Advance Booking Window

  • The Tip: Know your booking eligibility and be ready at 7:00 AM ET on your first day of eligibility (7 days before check-in for Disney Resort guests, 3 days in advance for other guests).

  • The Strategy: The most popular Tier 1 rides (like Slinky Dog Dash or Tiana's Bayou Adventure) will be gone first. Prioritize the highest-demand Tier 1 attraction for each park day and book it right at the start of your window.

9. ⏰ Prioritize Early Morning Return Times

  • The Tip: Aim for the earliest available return time for your very first selection.

  • The Strategy: Your next Lightning Lane booking is unlocked either after you use your first one, OR after a two-hour cool-down period. Getting an early morning return time means you can tap in sooner and immediately book your next ride, starting your loop for the day earlier.

8. 📱 App Prep: Designate a "Lightning Lane Master"

  • The Tip: One person in your group should be the official booking guru.

  • The Strategy: This person should have the My Disney Experience app open, logged in, all tickets/parties linked, and be familiar with the Tip Board before the trip. This prevents fumbling and ensures fast, decisive bookings for the whole group.

7. 🎯 Target High-Wait Rides and Shows

  • The Tip: Use your initial three Multi-Pass slots on attractions that consistently have long standby waits.

  • The Strategy: Don't waste a pre-selection on a show or an attraction that often has a 10-20 minute wait. Focus on rides like Peter Pan's Flight, Jungle Cruise, or any of the Tier 1 attractions to save the most time.

6. 🔄 The Immediate Re-Book Strategy

  • The Tip: As soon as you tap into a Lightning Lane entrance, open the app and book your next selection immediately.

  • The Strategy: This is how you maximize the number of rides you get per day. By booking as you tap in, you reset your eligibility right away without having to wait until you are fully off the ride. Tap in, book, and then ride!

5. 🗺️ Stack for Park Hopping

  • The Tip: If you are Park Hopping, use your initial three selections for your first park. After tapping into the first one, start "stacking" selections for your second park for the afternoon/evening.

  • The Strategy: For example, book one early ride at Magic Kingdom, and after you tap in, start booking 4 PM and 5 PM return times for rides at Epcot (your hop-to park). This ensures you have several Lightning Lane rides lined up when you arrive at your second park.

4. 💫 Utilize the Modify Feature (The Refresh Game)

  • The Tip: If you see an undesirable return time, book it anyway, then use the "Modify Plan" feature and continuously refresh the page.

  • The Strategy: Other guests are constantly canceling, and those slots instantly pop up on the modify screen. You can often change a late evening return time to a much earlier one by persistently refreshing the list for a minute or two.

3. ⚖️ Understand and Use the Tiering System

  • The Tip: In Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios, you can only book one Tier 1 ride for your initial three pre-selections.

  • The Strategy: Use that single Tier 1 spot on the ride you want most (e.g., Slinky Dog Dash or Tiana's). Then fill the other two slots with high-value Tier 2 attractions to maximize your advance bookings. (Animal Kingdom currently has no tiers).

2. 🪟 Take Advantage of Grace Periods

  • The Tip: The system allows a five-minute early arrival and a fifteen-minute late arrival grace period for your return window.

  • The Strategy: Factor these into your day. Being able to tap in up to 15 minutes late can be a lifesaver if you are running between attractions or finishing a meal. You can also use the 5-minute early window to squeeze in that next tap and immediately re-book.

1. 💰 The Individual Lightning Lane (ILL) Integration

  • The Tip: Remember that the Multi-Pass does not include the most popular rides (like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind or TRON Lightcycle / Run). These are purchased separately as Individual Lightning Lanes (ILLs).

  • The Strategy: Determine your ILL priorities before you book your Multi-Pass. Use the Multi-Pass to cover the rest of your must-do list, ensuring you ride the headliners (ILLs) and the mid-tier/high-wait rides (Multi-Pass) without waiting in long standby lines.

Universal Orlando’s Express Pass Unlimited vs. Disney World’s Lightning Lane Premier Pass: Which Is Better?

Planning a trip to Orlando? Compare Universal Orlando’s Express Pass Unlimited and Disney World’s Lightning Lane Unlimited to see which line-skipping service saves more time, money, and stress.

disney-vs-universal

When planning a theme park vacation, one of the biggest decisions families face is whether to invest in a line-skipping service. Both Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World now offer premium options that promise to cut down wait times and maximize your day. Universal’s Express Pass Unlimited and Disney’s Lightning Lane Premier Pass are the two most powerful tools in Orlando for skipping the standby queue. But how do they actually compare? Which offers better value, flexibility, and convenience?

Let’s dive into a detailed comparison of Universal Express Unlimited vs. Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass so you can decide which one is right for your trip.

What Is Universal Express Unlimited?

universal-express

Universal’s Express Pass Unlimited allows guests to skip the regular standby line and enter an expedited Express queue for most rides and attractions. Unlike the base Express Pass, which only lets you skip each participating ride once per day, the Unlimited version truly lives up to its name: you can ride the same attraction as many times as you want, all through the faster line.

That means if you’re obsessed with Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or Jurassic World VelociCoaster, you’re free to loop back around multiple times with minimal waiting.

Express Unlimited is sold as a per-day add-on to your ticket. Pricing is date-based, and the more crowded the parks are expected to be, the more expensive the pass will be. It can also sell out on peak days.

What Is Disney’s Lightning Lane Premier Pass?

lightning-lane

Disney’s line-skipping system is more layered and complicated. At Walt Disney World, most guests use Lightning Lane which requires you to book return times for the Lightning Lane Line access throughout the day. However, there’s also a premium tier often referred to as the Premier Access option.

This option, when available, functions more like Universal’s Express Pass. Instead of reserving time slots, you get one-time access to every Lightning Lane-eligible ride in a single park without booking windows. You simply walk up and scan in.

The catch? You only get one use per attraction. So while you’ll save time at nearly every major ride, you can’t re-ride your favorites through the Lightning Lane under the Unlimited plan. If you want to ride again, you’ll need to join the standby queue.

How the Two Systems Differ

hogwarts-castle

1. Unlimited vs. One-Time Use

  • Universal Express Unlimited: Truly unlimited. You can ride the same attraction again and again.

  • Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass: One Lightning Lane entry per attraction. Repeat rides must be in standby.
This difference is huge for thrill-seekers or anyone who wants to ride headliners multiple times.

universal-orlando

2. Reservations vs. Flexibility

  • Universal: No reservations needed. Walk up to the ride when you want and use the Express line.

  • Disney Premier: While you won’t need to schedule times as with regular Lightning Lane, remember that it’s only one use per ride.

3. Park Access

magic-kingdom
  • Universal Express Unlimited: Can be purchased for one park (Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure) or both if you have a park-to-park ticket.

  • Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass: Valid only in one park per day.If you’re hopping between Disney parks, you’ll need separate purchases.

4. Participating Attractions

pteranodon-flyers-jurassic
  • Universal: Every ride included, except Pteranodon Flyers.

  • Disney World: Covers most Lightning Lane attractions, but if Lightning Lane isn’t offered, Premier Pass won’t be accepted. Fortunately, most rides have a Lightning Lane.

    5. Pricing

hollywood-studios
  • Universal Express Unlimited: Prices vary by date and demand, typically ranging from $100–$350+ per person, per day.

Disney Lightning Lane Unlimited (Premier): Also dynamic pricing, with costs varying by park and crowd levels but typicaly fall in the $300 - $400 range per person, per day. For example, in October 2025, prices at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom reached $449 on busy dates.

Neither is cheap, but both can be worth it during peak crowds when lines stretch over an hour each.

6. Availability

tron-lightcycle-run

Both systems are capacity-controlled. Universal sells a limited number of Express Unlimited passes each day, and Disney restricts its Lightning Lane Unlimited sales as well. If you’re traveling during holidays or school breaks, booking early is essential.

The Guest Experience: What It Feels Like in the Parks

Universal Orlando

epic-universe

Using Express Unlimited is straightforward. You stroll to the ride, flash your pass, and head into a shorter line. Waits are often 10–20 minutes instead of 60+. For popular rides, this can be a massive time saver. Since you can re-ride endlessly, the experience feels indulgent—you’re truly buying time and freedom.

Families who want to squeeze everything into a short trip often find Express Unlimited invaluable. It’s also especially nice for thrill-seekers who want to marathon coasters or immerse themselves in the Wizarding World without constantly strategizing.

At Walt Disney World

mickey-mouse-magic-kingdom

Lightning Lane Premier Pass simplifies Disney’s previous Genie+ system. Instead of waking up early, booking return times, and juggling the app, you just head to the rides. For those who dislike planning, this is a huge stress reliever.

However, the one-time limit per ride can feel restrictive. If your kids love Slinky Dog Dash and want to ride it twice, you’ll only skip the line once. That means your day still requires some standby patience.

Which One Saves More Time?

big-thunder-mountain

This depends on how you tour the parks.

  • Universal Express Unlimited is generally the bigger time-saver for guests who want to ride a lot, repeat favorites, or maximize a short stay. The ability to skip lines multiple times per ride makes it more powerful.

  • Disney Lightning Lane Unlimited is more about convenience and simplicity than sheer ride count. It guarantees you’ll hit most attractions once without hassle but won’t let you marathon rides.

    Cost vs. Value: Who Wins?

space-mountain

Universal: If you’re visiting for one or two days and want to experience nearly everything, Express Unlimited is worth the premium. You’ll easily double or triple your ride count compared to standby guests.

Disney: The Unlimited option makes sense if you hate app-based planning or are visiting on a packed day. But if your group loves to re-ride, its one-time rule might feel limiting.

Who Should Choose Universal Express Unlimited?

  • Families with older kids or adults who love thrill rides.

  • Visitors with short trips who want to “do it all.”

  • Anyone visiting during peak seasons when wait times explode.

  • Theme park fans who want the freedom to re-ride without restrictions.

Who Should Choose Disney Lightning Lane Unlimited?

  • First-time visitors who want to guarantee one ride on each headliner.

  • Guests visiting on high-crowd days when Genie+ sells out.

  • Travelers who don’t care as much about re-rides but want smoother touring.

    Final Verdict

Both systems deliver on their promise to save time, but they cater to different kinds of parkgoers. Universal Express Unlimited is the more powerful option because of its true unlimited nature. You can ride to your heart’s content, and that freedom justifies its high cost for many visitors.

Disney’s Lightning Lane Premier Access Saves time however, the one-time limit per ride means it doesn’t offer quite the same bang for your buck if you love repeats.

If you want the ultimate efficiency and thrill-seeker freedom, Universal’s Express Unlimited wins. If you’re visiting Disney and want to remove the stress of reservations, Lightning Lane Unlimited may be the smarter choice.

Extra Planning Tips

  • Buy early: Both passes can sell out, especially on holidays and weekends.

  • Factor it into your budget: The cost can rival or exceed your ticket price.

  • Check which rides are excluded: Don’t assume every ride is open, could be closed for maintenance or technical difficulties.

  • Consider your group’s style: If your kids love repeats, Universal is best. If they just want to try everything once, Disney may be fine.

For example, if you purchase Lightning Lane Premiere Pass for Magic Kingdom Park and complete all eligible attractions you will not be able to use Premier Pass at a second park on the same day, even if you have Park Hopper Option tickets. However, you can combine this purchase with Lightning Lane Multi Pass and/or Single Pass at the same park, or additional parks as you like, subject to availability.

Universal Orlando Introduces Photo Validation for Express Pass Line Access.

This amazing new technology will speed up the lines at Universal Orlando

The next time you visit Universal Orlando Resort, you will be able to experience Effortless Entry using Photo Validation with a Universal Express Pass. After you have enrolled in Photo Validation at the theme park entrance, you’ll be able to bypass the regular line at select attractions in Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure without scanning your physical Universal Express Pass!

I love this technology because it saves a lot of time. Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal uses this instead of having to scan your Passport now. The line for customers doesn’t stop - people walk up to the camera, pause for a spit second, and then off they go.

Universal Orlando has been using Photo Validation technology to enter the theme parks as well. This significantly cuts down on the time it used to take to enter the theme parks, especially during the morning rush.

Photo validation entrance for Express Pass at universal orlando resort

Here’s how Photo Validation works at Universal Orlando

  1. Scan your ticket at the park entrance. You’ll still need to bring your tickets and your Express Passes each time you visit.

  2. Pose for the camera as the system creates a Photo Template that will be used to verify your identity.

  3. Once you’re verified, you are good to go and enjoy the attractions.

Here’s a tip: Before you visit the parks, make sure you link your park tickets to your Universal Account Wallet. This will give you a head start on unlocking a more seamless experience with Photo Validation when you arrive at the park entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Photo Validation at Universal Orlando

What is Photo Validation?

Photo Validation is a faster and more seamless way for our Guests to access select experiences throughout Universal Orlando Resort during their visit.

How Does Photo Validation Work?

Upon entering the theme parks, Guests will now be asked to take a photo instead of scanning their fingerprint. This photo will be securely stored and used to generate a Photo Template, which will validate admission and other entitlements during their current and future visits.

Can a Guest opt back in to Photo Validation?

Yes, Guests who opt-out and want to enroll in Photo Validation can do so at the park entrance, Guest Services, or in Universal Express lines at select attractions during the technical rehearsal period.

How is Photo Validation being used at Universal Orlando?

We use Photo Validation to verify tickets and ticket holders – making it a faster and more seamless way for our guests to access select experiences during their visit. Photo Validation is currently used at the park entrances of Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, and Universal Volcano Bay. Now, Guests may also use Photo Validation to verify and use their Universal Express Pass at select attractions throughout Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida during this technical rehearsal period.

Here’s What Will Replace Disney World Genie+

Disney Genie+ is going away. Here’s a new, simple way to skip the lines at Disney World.

Funny story. When Disney World had FastPass, guests could make ride reservations up to 60 days in advance. But guests didn’t like it because they had to plan every minute of their day, 3 months out. So, Disney announced Genie+, which offered same-day reservations for rides.

But then guests complained about same-day reservations because they wanted to have the ability to plan in advance!

Map of Magic Kingdom

It appears Disney World just can’t make everyone happy. But there’s some big news that should make almost everyone happy; Genie+ is going away!

Genie+ will go away on July 23, 2024, to make way for a newer, more user-friendly system that will begin on July 24th. Good riddance to Genie+! Very few people liked it, and hardly anyone fully understood the difference between Lightening Lane, Genei+, and Individual Attraction Selection.

I wrote several articles and made a video that mentioned that these names were too confusing. I specifically questioned why we have two names for the same thing: Genie+ and Lightening Lane!

Maybe someone at Disney was paying attention to my channel. Either that or thousands of guest complaints.

Lightening Lane Multi-Pass

On July 24, Walt Disney World will introduce a new skip-the-line program.

Disney Genie+ service will cease and become Lightning Lane Multi-Pass.

Individual Lightning Attraction Selection will now be known as Lightning Lane Single-Pass.

Disney World will also be updating Lightning Lane passes to help guests:

  • Make Lightning Lane plans before you arrive at the parks.

  • Choose your experiences and times before purchasing, so you know what you’re getting.

  • Book Lightning Lane passes for multiple vacation days, all in a single day.

Here’s how Lightning Lane passes will work beginning July 24, 2024

Lightning Lane Multi-Pass
When you purchase Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, you may make up to 3 Lightning Lane selections in a theme park, in advance. You’ll also be able to choose available times as you make your selections. On the day of your visit, once you use a selection, you may check the Disney World mobile app for availability to make additional selections.

Lightning Lane Single-Pass
Lightning Lane Single Pass will work much like it does today, where you can secure a time to ride one of Disney World’s most highly demanded attractions, but you’ll now be able to make your purchase and plan in advance.

How to Plan Ahead
If you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel or other select hotels (Shades of Green Resort, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels) you will be able to plan Lightning Lane passes up to 7 days in advance, for your entire stay (up to 14 days).

All other guests can plan up to 3 days in advance. These advance purchase windows will let you secure some of your must-do rides and experiences after you’ve had some time to decide what dining reservations you want to book and any other plans you may need to consider.

The Disney World App Will be More User Friendly

You may purchase a Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, a Lightning Lane Single Pass, or both. The app will also be updated to make it quicker and easier to purchase and plan, with fewer steps and a new option to purchase Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi-Pass in one transaction.

Lightning Lane passes will blend features from Disney World’s current services and the previously offered FastPass+ service, giving guests the choice to plan ahead and removing the hassle of planning during your vacation.

When can you Purchase Lightning Lane?

Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi Pass each can be purchased in advance, depending on eligibility, at 7 a.m. Eastern. Guests may pre-plan their experiences and return times at the time of purchase.

7-Days Prior

Guests of Disney Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels, and Shades of Green Resort. can purchase and begin pre-planning up to seven days prior to their check-in date for the length of their stay (up to 14 days).

3-Days Prior

Guests with date-based Disney Theme Park Tickets and those who have Disney World packages in Good Neighbor or Disney Springs Area hotels (like the Drury Plaza Hotel) can purchase and begin pre-planning up to three days prior to their ticket’s start date, for the duration of their ticket.

Guests with other forms of admission (such as non-dated tickets, Annual Passes, and Main Entrance Passes) can purchase and begin pre-planning up to three days in advance of each day of their visit. Theme Park reservations are required.

Day of Visit

  • Guests can utilize standby queues throughout the Theme Parks (included with admission).

  • Guests can sign up for Virtual Queues at select attractions (included with admission), subject to availability.

  • Guests can purchase Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, subject to availability.

  • Guests with a Lightning Lane Multi-Pass can select return times for additional experiences, one by one, after their first experience of the day has been redeemed, subject to availability.

Available with Theme Park Admission (no extra cost)

  • Lightning Lane Single Pass experience times can be selected at the time of purchase.

  • Guests may purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass for a given experience only one time per day.

  • If their admission includes Park Hopper benefits, Guests may pre-plan their Lightning Lane Single Passes for experiences in two different Theme Parks.

Lightening Lane Multi Pass

Why Magic Bands Are Not Needed Anymore

Stop using MagicBands! They are SO 2013. Here’s everything you need to know about MagicMobile.

MagicBands were introduced in 2013 along with the MyMagic+ program, also called My Disney Experience. If you haven’t noticed, Disney likes to create multiple names for basically the same thing: Disney Genie+ / Lightning Lane and Memory Maker / PhotoPass are good examples. MagicBands were how guests entered the theme parks, opened hotel rooms, charged meals and merchandise, and entered FastPass queues.

MagicMobile vs. MagicBand at Disney World

In January of 2021 Disney began phasing out MagicBands and stopped including them for free with Disney World vacation packages. Your entire visit to Walt Disney World is managed through your phone, so there’s no need to have a separate MagicBand when your phone can do the same things, plus more.

Today, it’s rare to see someone wearing a MagicBand in the Walt Disney World theme parks.

MagicBand displays in retail stores went from taking up entire walls to just a small selection, usually near the check out line - almost like an impulse item at the grocery store. I have even found them at the Disney World outlet store here in Orlando.

Magic Bands on rack at World of Disney Store at disney springs

A very limited selection of MagicBands for sale at World of Disney, the largest Disney merchandise store in world.

On a recent visit to Disney Springs, I found only a handful MagicBands in the technology section of the store. I could get any color I wanted as long as it was army green.

World of Disney is the largest Disney store in the world.

It’s worth noting that MagicBand+ is sold at Disney Pin Traders inside Disney Springs.

So, what happened to MagicBands?

It’s not that MagicBands are bad in anyway, in fact they are neat little gadgets. It’s just that we don’t need them anymore, they're outdated.

Today most people are using their smartphones instead. Yep, your phone comes with a hidden MagicBand inside. Smartwatches too.

MagicBand tap at Disney World
MagicMobile at Walt Disney World

Your smartphone (or smartwatch) can now do everything a MagicBand does, plus more.

Disney World MagicMobile

Disney World MagicMobile uses the wallet feature in your phone. If you’ve used your phone to pay for items in a grocery store or to board a flight, you have already used your phone’s wallet technology.

If you haven’t used the your phone’s wallet feature yet, that’s ok! I’ll go over it here. Plus, Disney’s app will walk you through the setup process in just a few steps.

Using MagicMobile at Walt Disney World

  • Enter theme parks

  • Connect Disney PhotoPass (MemoryMaker) images to your account

  • Gain access to virtual queue attractions when your boarding group is called

  • Open your Disney World hotel room

  • Charge to your Disney Resort hotel folio during your stay

  • Enter theme park parking lots (complimentary for Disney resort hotel guests and Annual Passholders.)

How to set up Disney MagicMobile:

  1. Download and install the Disney World app on your phone.

  2. Set up your account by linking your package reservation number or your standalone ticket order number to your account. Note: If you have a room and ticket package, you do not need to link your tickets separately.

  3. In the app, tap the Disney MagicMobile tile.

  4. Click the plus (+) sign to begin setting up your pass or passes.

  5. The app will then guide you through the setup process one step at a time.

If you need assistance contact Disney World Internet Help at 407-WDW-HELP.

📱 TIP: If anyone in your party has their own My Disney Experience account, I recommend the lead guest use the “Select Passes to Share” tab within the app and follow the steps.

Using Your Phone to enter the Disney World theme parks

At the park entrance you’ll need to tap your phone on the tapstyle, just as you would a MagicBand. You don’t even need to have the Disney app or the wallet app open. Your phone will automatically open to the wallet when it’s tapped against the reader. It’s magical. Your phone may even play a little jingle.

If you are managing passes for others, such as children, you’ll then swipe the screen to the next pass and tap again.

Cast Members are standing by ready to assist if you need help.

Is Disney MagicMobile free?

Yes, this feature is free to all guests of Walt Disney World, even if you’re not staying on property.

What to Do If You Lose Your Mobile Phone

If you lose your mobile phone or smart device, please go to Guest Relations for assistance. Don’t worry, you’re vacation isn’t over!

What is MagicBand+ and do I need it?

Read my full article Easy Guide to MagicBand+ here.

Will an old MagicBand from a previous trip still work?

Yes. Disney says that MagicBands should last up to 2 years however I have several that are much older than that and they still work. Just make sure they are listed as “active” in your My Disney Experience account.

How to Use Virtual Queues at Disney World

Guide to virtual queues at Disney World

When it comes to avoiding long lines at Walt Disney World, Disney offers 3 options: Lightning Lanes, Individual Attraction Selections, and Virtual Queues. They are very different and guests often get them confused. If you’re lost on how virtual queues work, don’t worry. I have great advice for you.

tron virtual queue at walt disney world

Torn LightCycle Run at Magic Kingdom

A virtual queue at Disney World is a system that allows guests to join a "line" for select popular attractions without physically standing in line. This system is accessed through the My Disney Experience App and allows you to secure a spot in line virtually.

Once it's your turn to ride, you’ll receive a notification and head to the attraction to enjoy your ride without the need to wait in a long line.

In short, a virtual queue places you in line, without you having to physically stand in line. You can enjoy other attractions in the park until you receive a notification on your phone that it’s your turn to ride.

This system helps to manage crowds, reduce wait times, and enhance the overall guest experience at the theme parks.

There is no cost to join a virtual queue but you must have valid theme park admission tickets.

How To use virtual queues at Disney World:

  1. Download My Disney Experience app.

  2. Create or log in to your Disney account.

  3. Link your package reservation number or your ticket confirmation number to your account. (If you booked a Disney World room and ticket package, you will not link your tickets separately. They will automatically populate with your package confirmation number).

  4. To find a virtual queue attraction, tap "Join Virtual Queue."

  5. Select the members of your party that want to join the queue.

  6. Tap “join virtual queue.”

  7. Wait for notification that it’s time to ride.

Now, those are the steps, but it’s not quite that easy.

Let’s dive a little deeper into using the virtual queue system at Disney.

Virtual queues are currently offered on 2 attractions at Walt Disney World

  • Tron Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind at Epcot

My best tip for joining a virtual queue

Virtual queues open at 7 AM each morning and reach capacity within a few seconds. Yes, seconds!

You must be logged into the Disney App a few minutes prior so you have time to navigate to the virtual queue section and select your party. At 6:59 AM, I recommend that you repeatedly tap the Join Virtual Queue button - non-stop until 7 AM rolls around.

Just keep tapping until you (hopefully) see your virtual queue position (a.k.a. Boarding Group).

There is no way to join the virtual queue in advance, this must be done the morning of your visit.

If you don’t get in at 7 AM, you will have another chance at 1 PM. For this opportunity, you must be inside the theme park, otherwise you won’t be able to join.

And if you got in a 7 AM, you won’t be able to join again at the 1 PM time slot.

If you’re attending a special event after the park closes to the general public such as After Hours, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, you can join the virtual queue at 6 PM. The virtual queue will reset just for attendees of the special event.

Rides like Tron and Guardians of the Galaxy are currently only available through the virtual queue system. Meaning, they do not take walk-ups. But if you miss out, continue reading on for the alternate plan.

What happens if you don’t get into a virtual queue?

If you are logged into the app a few minutes before 7 AM and repeatedly hit the Join Virtual Queue button, you should get in. But if you missed out, there is one other way to get on the ride.

Disney offers a program called Individual Lightning Lane Selection. It just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?

This system allows you to purchase a separate ticket for a specific ride, including virtual queue rides. Prices vary by day, usually between $15 and $30 per person. You purchase this in the Disney World App.

With this separate ticket, you’ll be able to bypass the regular line for the attraction using the Lightning Lane.

The Individual Lightning Lane Selection sells out as many people didn’t read this article on how to use virtual queues and missed out.

While this might not be the best way of managing lines, it’s what Disney has come up with. The system does work, and it will make more sense to you when you’re onsite.

If you have any questions about how these programs work, you can visit any of the Guest Assistance kiosks in the parks. They are identifiable with a big blue umbrella.

5 Things Disney World Needs to Fix Now

Small changes that would have a big impact on guest satisfaction.

Disney World is a great place to go on vacation, but there are some adjustments that Disney could make to improve guest satisfaction. Now, I’m not talking about big ideas that would take years to complete or require massive investments.

In my latest YouTube video, I present 5 realistic things that Disney can easily fix to improve guest satisfaction.

Watch this on YoutTube now >

#5 Gratuities With Disney Dining Plans

The Disney Dining Plans are back and even Free Dining has returned for select dates. The regular Disney Dining Plan includes Table Service Meals of course. It’s a nice way to make your vacation at Walt Disney World feel a little more all-inclusive. If you stick to just what your table service meal includes, you won’t have to pay out of pocket, you simply redeem your dining credits. But it doesn’t cover the gratuity for your server.

At the end of your meal, your server will bring you the bill with the cash total on it. You only have to pay for things you ordered that are not included on the dining plan. For me, this is rare. The total is provided to help you determine how much of a tip you should leave.

It would be so much easier if the gratuity was included as well. I personally never carry cash, especially in theme parks, I’m always afraid I’ll lose my wallet on a ride or leave it somewhere.

And charging your server’s gratuity to your credit card or Magic Band doesn’t seem right either.

I’m sure Disney doesn’t include gratuities so the cost of the dining plan seems cheaper. But I think Disney should borrow an idea from the cruise line industry where you have the option to prepay your gratuities in advance for the included meals. On a cruise ship, you simply get up and walk away when you're finished. All you have to do is show up and have a great time.

I find that most menu items are similarly priced so unless you want to split hairs on the total cost of the meal, the server should still make a decent tip. And in some cases, they may do better if the customer would otherwise be a lousy tipper.

The whole idea behind the Disney Dining Plan is to make it convenient for the guests. Disney knows you’re going to leave a tip, so why not just include it from the beginning?

# 4 Daily Housekeeping at Disney World

The trend of limited or even no housekeeping began across the hotel industry during the pandemic. But now it’s becoming the industry norm. I expect more from Walt Disney World, a company that prides itself on excellent guest service and often uses terms like the Disney Difference to demonstrate how they are better than other resorts.

To be fair, Universal Orlando has a similar policy and Royal Caribbean has cut housekeeping back to just once per day.

But when Disney cut daily housekeeping to every other day at its Value and Moderate Resorts, it made national news, as it often does. And housekeeping is limited to new towels and trash removal. I believe the term for this is now skimpflation.

Daily housekeeping is offered at Disney Deluxe Resorts which often hover around $750 per night. But room and ticket packages at a Moderate hotel can easily be $5,000 or more. For that kind of money, it would be nice if the bed was made.

Being pampered is part of the fun of staying in a hotel. It’s time to bring back daily housekeeping.

#3 Disney World Theme Park Hours

In recent years the Orlando theme parks have been closing earlier than in the pre-pandemic years. While Magic Kingdom often stays open until 10 or 11 pm, Epcot and  Disney’s Hollywood Studios often close at 9 pm. And Animal Kingdom can close as early as 6 pm. Universal Orlando is the same, sometimes closing both parks before 8 pm.

Epcot used to open in phases, first Future World, and then World Showcase would open at 11 am and often stay open until 10 pm or later. Today, the entire park opens at once. I would be ok with a phased opening if it means being in the parks later. Now the only way to stay in the Epcot later at night is to stay in a Deluxe hotel that includes a Monday night stay.

Being in the parks at night, especially in the summer months when afternoon temps are in the high 90s, is the only escape from the heat parkgoers have. And I think the parks are more fun at night.

#2 Seating at Disney’s Quick Service Restaurants

Remember when you had to be online at 6 am, 60-days in advance to make your dining reservations for Walt Disney World? Especially if you wanted Be Our Guest Restaurant.

Today, you can often get into Be Our Guest as a walk-up. Table service dining at Disney just isn’t as popular as it used to be. I still recommend making reservations 60-days in advance, but there is a lot more availability than in previous years.

Today, Disney World Quick-Service Dining is where it’s at. I think this is for two reasons.

  1. Quick-service meals are good! Disney has really upped its game here.

  2. Now that guests are paying for Genie+, they feel like they don’t have time for a lengthy table service meal or it might conflict with a Genie+ return time.

This means quick-service restaurants are crowded these days and it’s very hard to find a place to sit.

Disney has experimented with different ideas to help people find seats. A few years ago, Disney tested out a system where guests would enter a queue after they got their food. A Cast Member with a radio headset would talk to other Cast Members who were out scouting seats. I didn’t like having to wait in another line, but I knew I was going to get a table. At the Connections Eastery  at Epcot, Cast Members were only allowing people to sit at tables who had trays of food. This is loosely enforced today.

Disney needs to find a way to provide seating so guests are not meandering around with trays of food and balancing soft drinks with no lids - because Disney banned lids on cups. But that’s another show.

#1 Simplfy Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane

I’m aware that Disney Genie+ is a very controversial topic. I’m not here to say we should eliminate it and go back to paper Fastpass tickets, (but I know I’m not the only one who would love that!)

Disney could make a small change that would make a big difference. Why do we have 2 terms that describe the basically same thing? Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane. Have you heard a Cast Member trying to explain the difference between the two? Not to mention Individual Attraction Selection and Virtual Queus. And while we're at it, PhotoPass and Memory Maker too. This is straight from the Department of Redundancy Department

I think they should just call the whole thing Lightning Lane. Ultimately that’s what guests want. No one is buying Genie+ for the Photopass lenses, or the in-park audio features. Call it Lightning Lane and tell guests they get some free perks with it. And while we’re at it, Individual Attraction Selection doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue and it only refers to a handful of attractions. Can't that just be absorbed into Lightning Lane at this point? I seriously think the reason some people don’t visit Disney World is because Genie+ feels overwhelming to them.

I’m sure these 5 things won’t solve every issue, but I think these are some realistic changes Disney could make to enhance guest experiences at Walt Disney World Have something that Disney needs to fix?

Do you agree or disagree with my list?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Easy Guide to Disney Genie+ at Walt Disney World

Explained: What is Genie+? Lightning Lane? Plus 6 Helpful Tips for using Genie+

Genie+ gives you access to Lightning Lanes (formally FastPass) where you can skip the lines at select attractions at each of the 4 Walt Disney World theme parks.

A second, à la carte option, called Individual Lightning Lane, allows you to purchase a skip-the-line pass for some of the most popular rides without purchasing Genie+.

Magic Kingdom

What is Disney Genie+?

(Available for Purchase in the Disney World mobile app)

Disney Genie+ is the name of the service that lets you use Lightning Lane entrances at select attractions. Lightning Lane is a special line that bypasses the regular (Standby) line.

(I’ll provide a link below to the attractions that offer Lightning Lane).

If you decide to purchase Genie+, you can expect to enter 2-4 attractions or experiences per day using Lightning Lane entrances.

You can hold 1 Lightning Lane reservation at a time. Once your reservation is redeemed, you will be able to make another selection using the app.

Additional perks included with Genie+

  • Augmented Reality Disney PhotoPass Lenses are included and can be used at all four Theme Parks. You’ll find them in the My Disney Experience app.

  • Disney PhotoPass Downloads from attractions. This shouldn’t be confused with regular PhotoPass. This perk refers only to the on-ride photos/video.

  • Audio Tales from all four Theme Parks in the My Disney Experience app. These are short fun facts about the parks that can be played from the app. This is a neat feature but it’s difficult to hear the audio while you’re in the parks.

When can I purchase Disney Genie+?

Genie+ becomes available starting at 12 a.m. (midnight) on the day of your visit.

When can I make my first Lightning Lane selection?

On the day of your visit, starting at 7 a.m.

How Much Does Genie+ Cost?

Prices vary seasonally but you can expect to pay $15 - $30 per person per day for Disney Genie+.

How to make a Lightning Lane reservation

  1. Open the Disney World mobile app

  2. Go to “Tip Board”

  3. Review Lightning Lane attraction entrance times and make a selection. One Lightning Lane selection can be made at a time.

  4. When your arrival window rolls around, use the Lightning Lane entrance. Tap your Magic Band, mobile phone, or Key to the World Card to enter.

Individual Lightning Lane Passes

(Available for Purchase in the Disney World mobile app)

For some of Disney World’s most popular attractions, Lightning Lane entry is available to purchase individually as an à la carte option. This is known as an “Individual Lightning Lane Pass.”

You can purchase individual Lightning Lane entries for up to 2 attractions per day, one at a time.

You’ll be able to choose from a list of available times displayed on the app.

This option is available with or without Disney Genie+.

(Use the link below under “Resources” to see which attractions are eligible as an à la carte option.)

When can I make my first Individual Lightning Lane purchase?

For guests staying at Disney World hotels and Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Hotels only:

  • On the day of your visit, starting at 7 a.m.

All other Guests:

  • On the day of your visit, starting at each Theme Park’s opening time

Lightning Lane Tip: Individual Lightning Lane passes often sell out by 10 a.m. Purchase as soon as you’re eligible to do so.

How much does an Individual Lightning Lane pass cost?

Individual Lightning Lane passes range from about $15 - $20 per person. Prices are based on season and attendance levels.

How to purchase individual Lightning Lane entry

  1. Open the Disney World mobile app

  2. Go to “Tip Board”

  3. Look for the attractions labeled “Individual Lightning Lane.” Review available times and make your selection.

  4. When your arrival window rolls around, use the Lightning Lane entrance. Tap your Magic Band, mobile phone, or Key to the World Card to enter.

6 tips for disney genie plus

1 - Purchase Disney Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane Selections as early as possible.

To get the most out of Genie+ purchase it on the mobile app before 7 a.m. so you can book your first selection as soon as the service unlocks. Time is of the essence here when it comes to booking popular attractions.

2 - Individual Lightning Lane Selections

Stay at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel. You’ll be able to make your first Individual Lightning Lane selection at 7 a.m., ahead of the general public.

Those not staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel can purchase Genie+ when the park opens.

3 - Select Popular Attractions First

When it’s time to make your first Lightning Lane selection of the day, choose one of the headliner attractions. Many will reach capacity early in the day.

4 - A Secret to Lightning Lane reservations with Genie+

Remember you can hold only 1 Lightning Lane selection at a time - but there is a secret way to hold more.

If you book a Lightning Lane selection at 7 a.m. for a return time that is more than 2 hours after the park opening, Disney Genie+ will allow you to make a second selection. The ability to make another selection will unlock 2 hours after the park opens.

For example, let’s say it’s 7 a.m. and you select Slinky Dog Dash. You get a Lightning Lane time for 1 p.m.

The park opens at 9 a.m.

You’ll be allowed to make another Lightning Lane selection at 11 a.m. (because that’s 2 hours after the park opening time). At this point, you’ll have 2 Lightning Lane selections booked.

5 - Make your next Lightning Lane selection right away

As soon as you enter Lightning Lane at your reserved attraction, immediately make your next selection. Every minute counts when it comes to making reservations.

6 - Be open to crisscrossing the park

Genie+ will sometimes recommend attractions that are nearby just because they are..nearby. But the attractions being offered might not even have a long wait.

Instead, look for headliner attractions that have a long wait and use Genie+ for those instead.

This may mean you have to return to an area of the park you already visited but waiting less in line makes it worth it.

BONUS TIP - Watch Your Phone’s Battery!

At Disney World, you’re going to be on your phone a lot. From Genie+ reservations to photos, you’re battery will likely drain faster than usual.

Make sure you have a full charge before you head into the parks.

I also recommend purchasing a portable phone charger. Disney sells Fuel Rods in the parks for $30, and they can be swapped out for fresh ones for a nominal fee, even if you purchased a Fuel Rod someplace else.

Amazon has other brands starting around $20.

Tips for Avoiding Crowds at Walt Disney World

Insider tips beating the crowds at Walt Disney World

As a travel advisor, I’m often asked about the best time to visit Walt Disney World, or when are the parks less crowded?

Here are the most frequently asked questions I receive about avoiding crowds and long lines at Walt Disney World.

Tips for avoiding crowds at Walt Disney World in Florida

Tips for avoiding crowds at Walt Disney World in Florida

What is the best time to go to Walt Disney World to avoid crowds?

Anytime schools are session. If you live in a school district that starts school after Labor Day, consider going to Disney World in late August. It’s one of the least crowded times of the year!

Other less crowded times:

  • All of September and October

  • Early November

  • Early December

  • Late April

  • All of May

  • Early June

What time should we arrive at the parks?

To avoid crowds at Disney World, I recommend arriving at the theme parks about 30-40 minutes prior to the posted park opening time. If Magic Kingdom opens at 9 am, plan to be at the gate for 8:30 am.

The parks often open early, by as much as 20 minutes.

If you’re at the park when it opens, you’ll enjoy 60-90 minutes of lighter crowds. The majority of the guests will begin to arrive mid-morning.

Allow 60-90 minutes to get to the park entrance if using Disney buses in the morning.

Is it worth it for us to buy Genie+?

Yes! If you’re concerned about waiting in long lines and crowds, (I assume you are if you’re reading this article) then Genie+ is a great tool for you. If you don’t like standing in long lines, Genie+ is designed for you.

Is Disney World more crowded on weekends?

Yes and no. During peak times there is no difference between a Saturday or a Tuesday. During off-peak times of the year (see above), yes there will be a slight uptick in crowds on weekends, Especially around Halloween and Christmas.

But don’t let that discourage you, off-peak is still off-peak and you’ll still enjoy fewer crowds.

3rd Generation Magic Band Coming to Walt Disney World in 2022

MagicBand+ will arrive at Walt Disney World in 2022. Here’s how it works…

Disney World had originally announced that Magic Bands were being phased out in favor or new Smartphone technology. Today it was announced that a 3rd generation Magic Band is in the works, coming in 2022.

MagicBand+

MagicBand+

Here’s how it works

After Guests enter a theme park, MagicBand+ will come alive at various times with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations and gesture recognition.

Magic Band+ will allow Guests to engage with favorite Disney moments in new ways, including:

  • Play like a bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away and find virtual bounties throughout Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

  • Interact with the “Disney Fab 50 Character Collection,” the golden sculptures spread throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks.

  • Experience nighttime spectaculars in a new way as you see the band light up and complement the magic in the skies, including the new “Harmonious” at EPCOT and “Disney Enchantment” at Magic Kingdom Park.

Magic Band+

Magic Band+

MagicBand+ will be available for purchase beginning next year, including a discounted, pre-arrival price for Disney Resort hotel guests as well as new and renewing Walt Disney World Annual Passholders.

Current MagicBands will continue to be available, too, along with the complimentary Disney MagicMobile service that extends MagicBand features, such as park entry, to smart devices.

MagicBand+ will help immerse Guests in Disney stories and connect with characters you love like never before.

FastPasses & Dining Reservations Now Available for June 1st & 2nd, 2020

I’ve been checking for FastPass availability over the past few days to check on some rumors of Walt Disney World opening June 1st were true. My Disney Experience showed no availability for any date in May or June.

However, I just checked again this afternoon and I was able to select FastPasses for both June 1st and June 2nd. FastPasses were showing available in each of the four Theme Parks.

My Disney Experience shows FastPass+ availability for June 1st and 2nd, 2020.

I was also able to make dining reservations for both days as well. Dining options showed available at each of the 4 parks.

Disney has not officially released a reopening date for the parks and they remain closed until further notice. However, this could potentially be a little insight into a possible reopening date. I’ll update this post if I receive any notifications from My Disney Experience.

As soon as Disney makes an official statement as to the reopening of Walt Disney World Resort, I will post it here on SaveAtWDW.com

Disney World Digital Key FAQ

Disney World has announced that it will soon add a Digital Key feature to the My Disney Experience app. Initially this will be offered at Disney's Wilderness Lodge as part of a test phase but is expected to be installed at other Disney Resort hotels as well. This new feature will allow you to unlock your hotel room door using a digital key on your smartphone through the My Disney Experience mobile app.

Disney World Digital Key FAQ

What exactly is a Digital Key?

The digital key is a feature added to MyDisney Experience mobile app. You can use your phone to unlock the hotel entrance gate, hotel room doors, and most other public areas requiring a key, which may include pools, fitness centers, elevators and club level lounges. If you used Online Check In, you may even use your digital key from the moment you arrive at the hotel without having to stop at the front desk.

How does it work?

To use your digital key, activate the feature on your check-in day through a set up process in the My Disney Experience app. To enter their room, tap the “Unlock Door” button and then simply hold your phone against the door lock. See the video below...

What's the technology behind this feature?

Your phone links to the door via Bluetooth, the same way you might connect your phone to your car's audio system or wireless headphones. Once your phone and the door are linked via Bluetooth, the mobile app sends a command to unlock the door. This of course happens almost instantly.

Doesn't my Magic Band already unlock the door?

Yes. Magic Bands will continue to open doors by tapping it to the reader installed on the door.

What's so great about Digital Key if my Magic Band already unlocks doors?

Obviously there's some future technology and benefits coming that Disney hasn't shared with us yet. Being that this is only available at Wilderness Lodge suggests that it's part of a test phase.

Unofficially speaking, it would appear that Disney might offer a complete alternative to the Magic Band by allowing guests to use the mobile app instead. So perhaps plans to link Theme Park tickets and FastPasses to your smartphone could be in the works. Disneyland is already offering MaxPass, a type of upgraded FastPass service offered though it's mobile app.

Additionally, there have been some concerns from guests about having to wear a Magic Band in addition to devices they already wear such as a Fitbit, Apple Watch or similar device. Perhaps this could be an alternate option for anyone who chooses not to wear a Magic Band. This could also save Disney money if guests decline their Magic Band opting to use the mobile app instead. But this is all just speculation at this point.

Are Magic Bands being eliminated?

No. Disney has stated that Magic Bands are not going away. Not everyone has a smartphone, including children, so there still needs to be a device in place for these guests. Currently Magic Bands are still required to enter the Theme Parks, access PhotoPass, and to redeem FastPasses. If you're an off property guest (not staying at at Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you can purchase a Magic Band. Or, you'll be issued a wallet-size card at no additional charge for theme park access and FastPass redemption.

Will the door swing open by itself?

No, that would be cool though. The door simply unlocks for you.

How do I get the Digital Key on my phone?

Digital keys will be coming soon with no specific date set. Initially it will only be available to guests staying at Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort. Once it goes live, it will be an option for you within the Online Check In section of My Disney Experience. Stay tuned for updates.
