What's the Difference Between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean?
Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean
Both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean dominate the market for family-friendly cruise vacations and they both deliver a premium family vacation experience unlike any of the other cruise lines out there.
They both have private islands in the Bahamas. Most Bhamaian and Caribbean cruises include a stop at their respective island. Disney’s Castaway Cay is more tranquil and natural while Royal’s is more of a destination with restaurants, pools, water slides and of course, beaches.
People often ask me, which cruise line is better, Disney or Royal Caribbean? But it’s not about who is better, that’s too subjective. It’s about booking the vacation experience that appeals to you most.
Let me explain. There are basically 3 categories of cruises:
The inexpensive party cruises - popular with college kids.
Destination-rich cruises - popular with those enjoying their golden years.
Family-focused cruising - ships packed with exciting onboard activities.
Both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are obviously family-focused.
But they also attract a number of active adults who want to be somewhere between college kids having a blast and a boatload of retirees who enjoy quietly reading at the pool.
Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line is perfect for those with children ages 4 to 10.
But I would argue that Disney cruises are also ideal for Disney fans of all ages. Onboard experiences are centered around meeting Disney characters and Disney-themed shows.
Spaces onboard Disney cruise ships are highly themed environments, just like the theme parks. For example, on the Disney Wish, you’ll dine in the royal banquet hall of Arendelle from Disney’s Frozen film, or enjoy a drink in a Star Wars lounge that’s truly out-of-this-world (pun intended).
The newer Disney ships have water coasters that circle the top deck along with pools and Disney movies that play all day on a giant movie screen called Funnel Vision.
Disney Cruise Line offers a very high level of service and attention to detail, even when going though the booking process.
One of the best features about DCL is that many standard staterooms can accommodate 4 to 5 guests. This is not the case with most other cruise lines. But Royal Caribbean offers plenty of connecting stateroom options for families.
While Disney Cruise Line is on the higher end of cruise fares, I think you will feel that you definitely feel that you got what you paid for.
If you have tweens or teens that are indifferent to Disney, Star Wars or Marvel, then I recommend Royal Caribbean.
Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise line in the world and offers ships that are designed specifically with family vacations in mind.
Royal specializes in variety. Ships are expertly designed to offer something for the entire family.
This is especially true on the Oasis Class ships, the largest cruise ships in the world.
Some Royal Caribbean ships offer things like zip lines across the top deck, pools, rock climbing walls, water slides, ice skating (on real ice - in a real rink!), laser-tag courses, escape room challenges, bumper cars, specialty restaurants like a hibachi steakhouse, wellness spas, lounges, and casinos.
There are so many reasons to get excited about a Royal Caribbean cruise.
Royal Caribbean’s ships are loaded from bow to stern with game-changing thrills but also offer theater shows, live entertainment, as well as next-level dining, and a high level of service. See Royal Caribbean my tips ▸
Both Disney and Royal Caribbean offer a premium vacation experience with first-class activities and service.
They both dominate the Florida cruise market, departing from Port Canaveral (Orlando) and Miami but they each offer international itineraries too.
For example, Disney and Royal Caribbean sail to Alaska, the Mediterranean, Asia, and Mexico.
