Behind the Magic: Why The Sidewalks are Red at Magic Kingdom
Why did Disney choose red concrete for the sidewalks of Main Street USA at Walt Disney World? Some say it’s to represent a red carpet as you enter the show. Others say it was chosen to make photos look better. Still, others claim it is supposed to represent brick. So who’s right?
There are a few reasons actually. When the Magic Kingdom was being built, Disney turned to Eastman Kodak, a research and development company and a leader in photography, for help in choosing the right color.
First, grey sidewalks would be highly unimaginative. We expect more from Disney and grey cement just wouldn’t cut it.
Florida is, of course, the Sunshine State and sun glare off light-colored concrete would cause people to squint. So the color of the sidewalks needed to absorb sunlight rather than reflect it.
Kodak, who was to be a major sponsor of Walt Disney World, performed a study to identify which colors would absorb sunlight, blend in with the surroundings, and yet, make things “pop” in photographs. And maybe, if they got it right, people would love their photos so much, they would buy Kodak film for their cameras once again.
I think they nailed it with the color red they chose. Just look at the contrast between the sidewalks and the gardens. Brilliant! Most visitors don’t stop to question why the sidewalks are red, they just know that their digital photos look visually stunning, even if they have never heard of Kodak Film before.

Behind The Magic: Why Disney Doesn't Follow U.S. Flag Code on Main Street USA.
Did you ever notice how many flags and buntings there are throughout Main Street USA at Magic Kingdom Park? In this fictional town, modeled after Walt Disney’s childhood home of Marceline, Missouri, we see red, white, and blue just about everywhere. You may even see the mayor, fire chief, the Dapper Dans, Main Street Philharmonic, and other characters interacting with guests on the street. The entire town has come out to celebrate. Why all the excitement? Because it’s the 4th of July on Main Street USA. In Fact, everyday is the 4th of July, even in March!
Maybe that explains why we have a parade every afternoon and fireworks each evening, hmm.
With so many flags presented all over Main Street USA, how does Disney honor the U.S. Flag Code? Here’s a secret: most of the flags we see, are not official U.S. flags, they’re props. They don’t have 13 stripes and are missing a few stars. These fake flags do not need to be taken in during inclement weather nor do they need to be illuminated at night allowing Disney to tell the same story consistently every day. It gets a little confusing during Halloween and Christmas but that’s another article.
Flag Retreat at Walt Disney World
Speaking of flags on Main Street USA, since opening day at Walt Disney World, there has been a flag-lowering ceremony in Town Square every day. Yes, this flag is official, that’s why it’s lowered each afternoon. The ceremony often invites an honorary veteran to assist with the flag retreat.
It’s a very touching and moving ceremony, one that is truly a must-see event at the Magic Kingdom. The ceremony will start with a child volunteer who recites the Pledge of Allegiance with the help of the Dapper Dans. The Main Street Philharmonic will be there to play “God Bless America” and the National Anthem. I promise you won’t regret taking the time to go see it.
How do you get selected to participate in the Flag Retreat ceremony at Magic Kingdom? First, you should be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. Go to City Hall on Main Street USA first thing in the morning and mention that you would like to volunteer for the Flag Retreat. Here’s a great article on AllEars.net written by a veteran who participated in the event. He walks you through the entire process.
Have you participated in this the Flag Retreat at Walt Disney World? If so, share your story below!

Reminder! Important ADR Change on Magic Kingdom Party Nights
Has this ever happened to you? You’re searching for a parking spot at the mall hoping for something close to the entrance. Then there it is, the best spot in the entire complex, no one will be parked closer to the mall than you! Everyone else somehow overlooked it! But then as you get closer you notice there’s a compact car parked in it.
A similar experience can occur when trying to find availability at Magic Kingdom restaurants in the fall - Late August through December. Be Our Guest Restaurant, for example, is the most challenging ADR to get at Walt Disney World. You must be online at 6 am, 180 days in advance and even then you have only 2 minutes book it before it sells out.
But sometimes you’ll notice a flood of availability appear for dinner reservations at Be Our Guest, Crystal Palace and Liberty Tree Tavern, the 3 most most popular. Especially after 7 pm. How can this be? Is this the parking space syndrome, somehow everyone else overlooked it? Maybe. But chances are the Magic Kingdom is closing early for a party.
Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party usually begin at 7 pm. Magic Kingdom will close to day guests and only those who have purchased a party ticket can remain inside the park after 7 pm.
Guests who pay for the party have so many activities to explore, many don’t want to spend their time sitting down at a restaurant, thus wide-open availability at places like Be Our Guest Restaurant and Crystal Palace. They will sell out for sure, just not as fast..
Unfortunately if you’re not a party guest, you cannot stay in the park later than 7 pm even if you have an ADR for a Magic Kingdom restaurant. This can be a moment of frustration for some people and Disney’s website doesn’t make this abundantly clear. For non-party goers the last ADR for Magic Kingdom dining is 5:55 pm.
If you’re already inside the restaurant when the park closes, of course you can stay. But when it’s time to leave, a cast member will escort you to the park’s exit. “You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here” kind of thing.
In the fall, it’s critical for you to know when Magic Kingdom will be hosting evening parties. There are more now than ever before. If you’re thinking of attending one, go for it! They are tons of fun. But don’t waste time at a restaurant - there’s too much to see and do.

Disney’s Walk Around the World Bricks - Retired
Disney’s Walk Around the World program is ending as work on a new entrance to Magic Kingdom is set to begin. The entrance will allow for faster security checks and enhanced bus loops.
If you purchased one of these bricks, here how you can get a copy. Disney wanted to let guests know that obtaining the original brick will not be possible due to the nature of the work being performed and the time they have to complete it.
If you or you sponsored a brick and would like to get a souvenir version, here’s what to do:
If visiting in person:
Stop by City Hall at Magic Kingdom Park or Guest Relations at Disney Springs to verify the previous brick by sharing the name and hometown of the Guest who sponsored it.
After verification, Guests will be given a one-time use voucher to present by, or before Aug. 31, 2019, at Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. (at Magic Kingdom Park – separate theme park admission required) or the Marketplace Co-Op (at Disney Springs), enabling Guests to purchase one commemorative 6” brick at a special price of $10 (plus tax).
If needing to contact Disney virtually:
Email guest.services@disneyworld.com or call 407-828-2701 with the name and hometown of the Guest who sponsored the brick.
After verification, Guests will be provided a code to use by, or before Aug. 31, 2019, on shopDisney.com to purchase one commemorative 6” brick at a special price of $10 (plus tax and shipping) starting this spring. Please note, this code is for one-time use and will only be valid on shopDisney.com and may not be redeemed in person or at any other location. (Limit one voucher or code per verified Guest.)
For Guests who did not participate in the original “Disney’s Walk Around the World” program but would like to purchase a personalized brick, souvenir bricks are available to customize and purchase starting at $29.99 (plus tax and optional shipping). These are on sale now at Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. at Magic Kingdom Park (separate theme park admission required to enter) or the Marketplace Co-Op (at Disney Springs), or later on shopDisney.com starting this spring.
Another Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Coming to Walt Disney World
A new Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique location is set to open at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa this summer. The new boutique – the third location at Walt Disney World Resort – will be located inside what’s currently the Ivy Trellis Salon, which will relocate into Senses – A Disney Spa.
Also based on the popularity of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom Park, work will begin this spring to expand the location, adding more chairs, a magic mirror, and a transformation experience that will help Guests choose the perfect outfits and accessories. The Magic Kingdom Park location will remain open during these enhancements and existing reservations will not be affected.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party FAQ
Q: Once the park closes, how will Disney know I have a Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party Ticket?
A: There will be several kiosks located in the park where you can swipe your Magic Band to redeem your party ticket for a wristband. The wristband will signal Cast Members that you have a valid party ticket and you'll be permitted to stay in the park. There is also a dedicated entrance that you can use if you're not already inside the park.
Q: Can I stay in the Magic Kingdom after it closes if I don't have a ticket?
A: Of course not. Without a wristband, you won't be permitted on any rides once the party officially begins. Yes, they will be checking carefully, especially during the first two hours. Checkpoints are set up throughout the park where you will be required to show a Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party wristband. Without one, you will be turned around and kindly asked to exit the park. You can try to stay as long as possible but eventually they will notice.
Q: Can I make FastPass+ selections in advance during Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party?
A: No, FastPass will be turned off. But with lighter crowds and so many special events taking place, you shouldn't need it.
Q: When and where is the best place to watch Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade?
A: Main Street USA is by the far the most popular location to watch the parade. You should claim your spot anywhere along Main Street starting 45 to 60 minutes prior to the parade. Be patient here, it gets very crowded. I like to recommend that you give priority to little kids, even if they aren't with your family - let them scoot up in front of you so they can see. It will mean a lot to them and you'll feel good about making a little kid happy.

Work on Tron Coaster Has Begun but Brings These Closures
On my last trip to Magic Kingdom it was clear that work has begun on the new Tron-themed coaster in Tomorrowland. This new ride is going just to the left of Space Mountain. Also, Disney has erected a new Tron-themed billboard that’s now visible from Storybook Circus.
Ride Closures
Due to the construction of Tron, Disney has announced two new ride closures:
The Walt Disney World Railroad will temporarily close beginning in December 2018. A reopening date has not been announced.
The Tomorrowland Speedway will close for a portion of 2019, as the track is adjusted. It will reopen as the same attraction in the summer of 2019. Personally, I'd love to see a total redesign of this attraction as well.
