Why You Should be Using Disney Gift Cards at Walt Disney World

How to save money by using Disney gift cards at Walt Disney World!

Using Disney Gift Cards at Disney World offers several valuable benefits for visitors to consider:

Special Promotions: From time to time, Disney offers promotions on gift card purchases, which can include enticing discounts or bonus amounts when purchasing certain denominations. These promotions can provide additional value and savings for guests when planning their spending effectively.

Gift cards are often sold for less than their value at stores like BJ’s Wholesale, Target, and Sam’s Club. For example, you may get a $500 Disney Gift Card for $480. That’s a pretty good deal - it’s like finding $20 on the sidewalk of Main Street USA.

Use Disney Gift Cards at Walt Disney World

This $500 Disney gift card costs only $480 at BJ’s Wholesale.

Compatibility with Discounts: Disney Gift Cards can also be used in conjunction with specific discounts or promotions, such as Annual Passholder discounts. This compatibility gives guests the opportunity to maximize their savings while enjoying a wide range of activities and attractions within the parks.

Budget Management: Disney Gift Cards enable guests to establish a clear spending limit ahead of their trip. This proactive approach can significantly aid in managing expenses more effectively, ensuring that visitors enjoy their time at the parks while staying well within their budgetary constraints.

Convenience: These gift cards can be used at a variety of locations throughout the parks, including restaurants, merchandise shops, and attractions. This wide acceptance reduces the need to carry cash or multiple payment methods, ultimately providing a simpler and more streamlined way to make purchases while enjoying the park atmosphere.

Accessibility: Disney Gift Cards can be easily purchased online, at numerous retail stores, or directly through the My Disney Experience app. This accessibility makes it highly convenient for guests to prepare for their upcoming adventure and allows them to load funds onto their cards in a flexible manner as needed.

No Expiration Date: Unlike many other gift cards or vouchers that may have restrictions or expiration dates, Disney Gift Cards do not expire. This important feature permits guests to use the card for future trips, thus making them a flexible and practical option for those who enjoy recurring visits to Disney World.

For more on using gift cards at Disney World, check out my video on YouTube

Gift Potential: Disney Gift Cards not only serve as versatile spending tools but also make excellent gifts for Disney fans. Whether for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions, they provide recipients with the freedom to choose their own experiences or items at the parks, making each visit feel personalized and special.

Universal Orlando Introduces Photo Validation for Express Pass Line Access.

This amazing new technology will speed up the lines at Universal Orlando

The next time you visit Universal Orlando Resort, you will be able to experience Effortless Entry using Photo Validation with a Universal Express Pass. After you have enrolled in Photo Validation at the theme park entrance, you’ll be able to bypass the regular line at select attractions in Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure without scanning your physical Universal Express Pass!

I love this technology because it saves a lot of time. Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal uses this instead of having to scan your Passport now. The line for customers doesn’t stop - people walk up to the camera, pause for a spit second, and then off they go.

Universal Orlando has been using Photo Validation technology to enter the theme parks as well. This significantly cuts down on the time it used to take to enter the theme parks, especially during the morning rush.

Photo validation entrance for Express Pass at universal orlando resort

Here’s how Photo Validation works at Universal Orlando

  1. Scan your ticket at the park entrance. You’ll still need to bring your tickets and your Express Passes each time you visit.

  2. Pose for the camera as the system creates a Photo Template that will be used to verify your identity.

  3. Once you’re verified, you are good to go and enjoy the attractions.

Here’s a tip: Before you visit the parks, make sure you link your park tickets to your Universal Account Wallet. This will give you a head start on unlocking a more seamless experience with Photo Validation when you arrive at the park entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Photo Validation at Universal Orlando

What is Photo Validation?

Photo Validation is a faster and more seamless way for our Guests to access select experiences throughout Universal Orlando Resort during their visit.

How Does Photo Validation Work?

Upon entering the theme parks, Guests will now be asked to take a photo instead of scanning their fingerprint. This photo will be securely stored and used to generate a Photo Template, which will validate admission and other entitlements during their current and future visits.

Can a Guest opt back in to Photo Validation?

Yes, Guests who opt-out and want to enroll in Photo Validation can do so at the park entrance, Guest Services, or in Universal Express lines at select attractions during the technical rehearsal period.

How is Photo Validation being used at Universal Orlando?

We use Photo Validation to verify tickets and ticket holders – making it a faster and more seamless way for our guests to access select experiences during their visit. Photo Validation is currently used at the park entrances of Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, and Universal Volcano Bay. Now, Guests may also use Photo Validation to verify and use their Universal Express Pass at select attractions throughout Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida during this technical rehearsal period.

Transportation from Orlando International Airport and Walt Disney World (and Universal)

Popular transportation options between Orlando International Airport, Walt Disney World, and Universal Orlando

What’s the best way to get from Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World, and back again?

In this guide, I’ll share the most popular options for ground transfers to and from Orlando’s theme parks, even Port Canaveral, plus my recommended vendors.

Guide to Ground Transfers and Airport Transportation at Walt Disney World

Private Town Cars and Vans

In my opinion, hiring a car service is the way to go because you are guaranteed a professionally trained driver and a clean vehicle. One of the biggest complaints I hear from people using Uber and Lyft in Orlando is that the cars are often dirty. I also hear that it’s difficult to find a ride that has a car seat for little ones.

If you’re comparing a car service to a shuttle, consider this: a private car will travel directly to your destination in a fraction of the time a shuttle will take.

They also make runs to Port Canaveral for cruises. Most will include a free grocery stop after pick up from the airport.

Pros:

  • 24-hour service, fast and direct.

  • Professional drivers who assist with luggage

  • Will pick up from any terminal at the airport

  • Airport fees are included in the price.

  • Car seats are available upon request

  • May cost less than a shared shuttle service

My Preferred Car Services In Orlando

Orlando Superior Transportation

Orlando Superior Transportation has professionally trained drivers and a fleet of town cars and limos servicing Orlando International Airport, Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and Port Canaveral.

They offer affordable pricing. Rates start at $95 one-way for 4–6 passengers. Promo rates are often available. For example, I recently saw a 15% promo code available on their website, reducing the cost to $80.75.

Complimentary car seats and booster seats are available. A 15–20-minute grocery stop can be included.

There are convenient payment options as well. Both cash and credit cards are accepted.

Your driver will meet you inside the baggage claim area at MCO and assist you with luggage.

Tiffany Towncar

Tiffany Town Car has been in business since 1998. Tiffany offers professional drivers and vehicles that can accommodate 4 people up to 10 people. They specialize in Walt Disney World and Port Canaveral but will also provide transportation to Universal Orlando, Brightline, and Amtrak.

Fares between Orlando International Airport and Walt Disney World start at $95 each way. Fares to Port Canaveral start at $155 each way.

A driver gratuity of 20% is not included but is recommended. Complimentary car seats and booster seats are offered plus a complimentary grocery stop can be arranged with advance notice.

Mears Connect Shuttle Service

Mears Bus at orlando airport

Mears Connect provides convenient airport transfers for guests traveling to and from the Orlando International Airport (MCO) and various destinations in the area, including Walt Disney World.

Mears Connect is generally more economical but may result in longer travel times due to multiple stops. BUt check your prices, if you have a large party, it may be cheaper or at least similarly priced to a car service.

You can book Mears Connect services in advance through their website or at designated locations in the airport. Upon arrival, passengers can check in at the Mears Connect desk located in the airport's terminal, where staff will assist with boarding the bus.

Pros:

  • Discounts and deals are often available

  • Operates 24 hours

Cons:

  • The slowest option takes 90 minutes or more

  • You may leave for the airport sooner than if you went by Uber or town car

RideShares - Uber and Lyft in Orlando

Use your phone to request a ride from Uber or Lyft. No advance reservations are required offer you the most flexibility with your schedule.

Pros

  • Fast, direct service

  • Plenty of availability in Orlando including SUVs and vans

  • Pick up from any terminal at Orlando International Airport

  • Car seats can be requested

  • Go anywhere in Orlando, even Universal and Port Canaveral.

Cons

  • Surge pricing often in effect in Orlando

  • Fares may change when there’s heavy traffic.

  • Somewhat confusing menu of vehicle types and services (like requesting car seats).

Uber and Lyft at Walt Disney World

Uber and Lyft are by far the easiest way to get around Orlando. If you’re comfortable using ride shares, this is an excellent way to go.

Fares are typically in the $60 - $80 range (each way).

See my article on how to use Uber and Lyft at Walt Disney World

Car Rentals in Orlando

Add a rental car to your Walt Disney World for competitive rates.

Pros:

  • Rental rates are competitive in Orlando

  • Free parking at Disney World hotels and theme parks (when staying at a Disney World hotel).

  • Disney has Alamo and Enterprise on property and a free shuttle to Disney World hotels.

  • Travel protection purchased from Disney covers your rental car in most situations.

Cons:

  • You could have a long walk when parking at the theme parks.

  • Fees are charged if you return the vehicle to a different location than where you rented it.

Booking a rental car through Disney offers a competitive rate and the convenience of having it listed in your travel plans. You can choose to rent from Orlando International Airport or one of the onsite offices at Walt Disney World.

You can also book a car on your own of course. For tips, see my article, How to Save Money on Car Rentals in Orlando.

Abandoned: What Happened to the Orlando Sun Resort

The largest hotel in Florida now sits abandoned, just outside of Walt Disney World. Here’s what happened.

The abandoned Orlando Sun Resort and Convention Center sits right outside the entrance to Walt Disney World Resort and the Disney-created Town of Celebration, less than a mile from my house. I pass by it every day and have been fascinated by it since moving here.

How could a hotel in such a prime location fail? What happened here? What went wrong? What’s next for this mega-resort complex?

Orlando Sun Resort Entrance off US-192 in Kissimmee, Florida

There couldn’t be a more convenient location for an off-property hotel outside of Walt Disney World. It’s probably the most valuable piece of land in the Orlando area, located on the corner of I-4, US-192 and the main entrance to Disney.

And yet is has been abandoned since 2012.

The Slow Death of Kissimmee, Florida

US-192, also known as Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, intersects with I-4 and World Drive, the main artery that runs through Walt Disney World.

In the 1970s and 1980s, 192 was a thriving tourist area, both sides of the 6-lane roadway were lined with hotels, chain restaurants like IHOP and Denny’s, and Disney souvenir shops.

Entrance to the orlando Run Resort. Tennis courts on the left side, main lobby straight ahead.

For many, staying in Kissimmee was the only option as Disney had a limited number of hotels, and they were often sold out.

Kissimmee was a much-needed hotel district that supported Disney World.

Orlando Sun is located at the corner of US192, I-4, and less than a 1/4 mile from entrance to Walt Disney World

In the 1990s Disney began ramping up construction on several new hotels.

Budget-friendly hotels like Disney’s All Stars Resort and moderately priced resorts like Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Port Orleans Resort were not only affordable but convenient.

With these new hotels, guests could stay on Disney property, use Disney transportation, and enjoy a number of exclusive perks.

The hotels on 192 soon began to die a slow death from that point forward.

Tourists were starting to become victims of crime often targeted for their rental cars. Rental cars had a particular letter/number combination on their license plates and criminals used this to target them. The story made national news.

Then, then the area suffered a major tourism crash following 9/11. It would be the final blow.

Many hotels in Kissimmee shuttered for good or sold out to time-share companies.

What happened to the Orlando Sun Resort?

The hotel was built in 1972 by the Carolando Corporation, owned by a small group of North Carolina investors who saw an opportunity to build a hotel complex right outside of the soon-to-be-built Walt Disney World in the late 1960s.

It was to include thousands of hotel rooms, restaurants, a convention center, and the tallest observation tower in Florida.

The observation tower, if completed, would have been the tallest building in Florida. Walt Disney World property is the white-shaded area on the left side of the photo.

But Carlando soon hit serious financial trouble and less than a year into the project, they sold the property to the Hyatt Corporation. Hyatt finished building over 3,400 hotel rooms and the convention center, but never built the tower.

Like abandoned content? Check out my video on YouTube: Abandoned Disney World Part 2

It was renamed the Hyatt Orlando Resort.

Hyatt operated the hotel for several years as a budget-friendly, modern resort and convention center but like most hotels in the area, it struggled to get heads in the beds in early to mid 1990s.

By 2002, Hyatt Orlando Resort was in serious financial trouble.

Kissimmee’s tourism economy was collapsing rapidly and those visiting Walt Disney World opted to stay on Disney property.

Attempts were made to revitalize the 192 corridor with business grants, new public transportation options and a crackdown on crime.

But on September 12, 2003, Hyatt suddenly closed its doors permanently, without notice to guests or employees. They literally told guests to be out by noon that day and few got refunds.

The hotel was later purchased at auction by the Moinian Group out of New York. The new owners planned to repurpose the hotel campus by making the rooms into condominiums.

While they waited for investors and permits, the hotel sat vacant for several years.

In 2007, Moinian decided to reopen the hotel so that it would generate some income until they could move forward with the condo project.

New furniture, soft goods, and landscaping were part of a nearly $1 million dollar refurbishment.

It was renamed the Orlando Sun Resort

The owners tried to attract new business by offering DJ dance parties and even boxing matches! These efforts failed.

Guests saw the hotel as grossly outdated and wrote negative reviews on Google about hot water issues, mold in the hotel rooms, and a lackluster pool.

The Orlando Sun Resort closed once again in 2012 and was listed for $74 million.

It was purchased in 2021 by another New York company that took a generous grant from Osceola County to improve the property.

Nothing has been done on the property to date and the old hotel still sits abandoned.

The Orlando Sun Resort website is still active, along with a YouTube channel. They have not been updated since 2012.

The resort was built with a pod design, where rooms were clustered into separate, but connected buildings.

Many of the buildings are octagon shaped. This was considered a futuristic and modern design in the early 1970s.

The complex is so large, it runs along US-192, I-4, and stretches to Osceola Parkway.

The Orlando Sun Resort was a massive complex. At time of opening, it was the largest hotel in Florida.

This hotel is private property, fenced off, and monitored by police and security. “No Trespassing” signs are present.

The Sassagoula River connects Port Orleans Riverside to Disney Springs, Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort.

Inside the lobby you’ll see a seating area, where passengers might wait for their steamboat (or Uber) to arrive. If you look closely at the richly polished wood floor and you’ll notice a beautiful compass rose inlay, made by hand.

Universal Orlando Resort is located just 45 minutes away from the nation’s second-largest cruise port: Port Canaveral. I frequently book clients on both, a weekend cruise or a 4-night cruise and combine it with a theme park package.

I never recommend flying into Orlando the same day you cruise just in case there’s a delay or cancellation due to weather.

So if you’re going to arrive early, why not arrive a few days early and check out the Wizarding World of Harry Potter or even Universal’s newest theme park: Epic Universe?

With this new land and sea package, I can book your ground transfers between Universal Orlando and Port Canaveral, or between Port Canaveral and Universal Orlando. Your transfers can be included in your Universal package.

Plus, I can arrange transfers between Orlando International Airport and either Universal or Port Canaveral.

3 NEW Ways to Celebrate Christmas at Disney Springs

New offerings and returning favorites this year at Disney Springs

The holiday season is underway at Walt Disney World Resort with festive decorations in every corner. This is an ideal opportunity for guests to enjoy joyful activities with their loved ones, indulge in tasty seasonal treats, and make lasting memories together.

Here are 3 new holiday offerings that guests can experience this year:

Experience Holiday Magic at the World of Disney Windows

For the first time, the windows at the World of Disney store interact with guests' MagicBand+ to create enchanting holiday experiences for the whole family. Each window features festive themes along with unique animations and personalized elements activated by tapping a MagicBand+.

Guests can enjoy two storylines starring beloved characters that shouldn’t be missed this holiday season.

Don’t forget to explore all the windows, which may spark ideas for writing letters to Santa.

Visit Santa’s Marketplace

Guests can Santa’s Marketplace near Disney’s Pin Traders and share their Christmas list with Santa in person! Or if guests are looking to spread holiday cheer with a family Christmas card, the Disney PhotoPass team is ready to capture the perfect photo of the whole family.

When guests arrive at Disney Springs, they can join the virtual queue to visit Santa and enjoy holiday shopping while they wait.

Christmas Tree Stroll

One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to see all the different trees on the Disney Springs Christmas Tree Stroll. I'm excited that it has returned this year with some new additions!

My family and I stroll across Disney Springs to see the entire collection of beautifully decorated Christmas trees celebrating some Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and superhero favorites.

This year be sure to look for those that offer interactions with MagicBand+ experiences

Disney Selects Godparents for the Disney Treasure

What a great way to honor those who work for the Walt Disney Company!

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) announced the new “godparents” for its new ship, Disney Treasure…the entire Walt Disney Company cast, crew, Imagineers, and employees around the world!

Disney Treasure with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in Port Canaveral

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse greet the Disney Treasure in Port Canaveral, Florida

Disney said it selected its employees as a heartfelt tribute to the more than 200,000 dreamers and doers who make every Disney entertainment, vacation and at-home experience possible. DCL will celebrate the magic makers from across the globe who have created meaningful, lifelong Disney memories for generations of families at a special ceremony at the West Side piers in New York City on Nov. 19.

“At the core of everything we do at Disney are the dedicated Cast Members and employees who create the magic that brings joy to millions of people around the globe,” said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “That’s why we are proud to honor all Disney employees as the godparents of the Disney Treasure. This is our way of paying tribute to the dreamers and doers who continue to tell our stories in the most compelling and innovative ways.”

Fulfilling a longstanding maritime tradition, the time-honored role of a ship godparent symbolically bestows good fortune on the vessel and its travelers with a special blessing during the ship’s Christening ceremony.

In 2022, DCL reimagined the tradition by naming all Make-A-Wish children—including past, present and future recipients—as godchildren of the Disney Wish, sister ship to the Disney Treasure.

Inspired by the theme of adventure, Disney Treasure will feature both new and signature DCL experiences steeped in captivating Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Disney Parks stories. These include an original Broadway-style retelling of “Moana”; immersive dining experiences inspired by Pixar’s “Coco” and Marvel Super Heroes; a splashtacular Mickey Mouse-themed water attraction; signature fireworks at sea; imaginative clubs for kids of all ages; and new lounges inspired by the beloved Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” Disney Parks attractions.

Disney Treasure is part of a multi-year expansion of the DCL fleet, which currently includes six ships and seven more ships on order or being built by 2031. The period of growth strengthens DCL’s role as an ambassador of Disney storytelling, bringing beloved entertainment and characters to families across the globe.
