How to experience the ultimate Universal Orlando vacation in 2025: Tips and tricks from a travel expert.

Planning a trip to Universal Orlando in 2025? Start here.

Universal Orlando is going to have a big year in 2025 as it prepares to open a new theme park, Epic Universe on May 22. But what if you plan your Universal vacation before the park opens? I have 10 helpful tips on how to experience Universal Orlando this year.

10. When to Visit Universal Orlando in 2025

Choosing when to visit Universal Orlando will be a tough call in 2025. Do you go before Epic Universe opens and take advantage of deep discounts, or do you wait to see the new park? There are some major pros and cons here.

The last major theme park to open in Orlando was Islands of Adventure, and that was 1999. But as of right now, you’ll only be able to visit Epic Universe 1 day and you must buy a minimum of a 2-day day ticket which most people will do anyway. I don’t think Universal is going to have any trouble putting heads in the beds after Epic Universe opens, so the discounts might not be as good as they are for winter and spring travel.

And what are those discounts? Right now you can get deep discounts on Universal hotels and take advantage of a special ticket offer: buy 2 park days, get two park days free. There’s another offer running that will give you a Universal meal card worth up to $1,000. The gift card amount is based on the resort and the number of nights you book.

If you’re primarily concerned about weather and crowds. That’s easy. For crowds, avoid school breaks such as President's Day week, the week of Easter, and Christmas week. If you come in September, the parks are pretty much empty.

And if you visit from August through October, you can attend Halloween Horror Nights. I expect summer will be crowded because the opening of Epic Universe will draw massive crowds. As for mild weather, my favorite months in Orlando are April, May, and October.

9. 2025 Universal Orlando Tickets

Currently, Universal Orlando is running a promotional ticket where you get 2 days free when you buy 2 days. So, that’s 4 days in the parks, for the price of 2. You can add on Volcano Bay water park which is well worth it. The cost to add Volcano Bay is minimal so even if you just go a a few hours, it’s worth it.

Now, I highly recommend adding the Park to Park feature to your tickets, This allows you to visit multiple parks on the same day. This is the only way to ride the Hogwarts Express train because it travels between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. It’s also a major attraction - if you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is a must-do.

Universal uses date-based ticket pricing - meaning each calendar day has a different price. In most cases the cost difference is minimal from one day to the next, however, there are more significant increases during peak travel times like Easter and Christmas.

The good news is that Universal gives you a discount on multi-day tickets. So, a 4-day ticket costs less per day than a 1 or 2-day ticket. In other words, the longer your ticket, the cheaper each day gets.

8. Universal Express Passes

Most theme parks offer a skip-the-line feature that can be added to a regular ticket. Universal Orlando’s is called Express Pass. It’s a very easy system, though not cheap. In contrast, Disney World is super confusing but cheap - and very limited. But Universal offers a hack where you can get express passes for free! More on that in a moment. At Universal, for an additional fee - ranging anywhere in price from $80 to $280 per person, you can skip the line at most attractions 1 time.

Then there’s Express Pass Unlimited which allows you to skip the lines as much as you want at most attractions. This option runs from about $100 to $325 per person, per day.

As of right now, Express Pass does not work at Volcano Bay or Epic Universe. There’s a separate Express ticket for Volcano Bay and Universal has not shared if Epic Universe will have a skip-the-line feature.

How do you get Express Passes for Free? Stay at one of Unviersal’s Premier Hotels. All but Helios Grand Hotel includes complimentary Express Pass Unlimited for guests staying at this hotel. I often advise my clients to stay at a Premier hotel rather than purchase Express Pass separately. It’s often cheaper, especially if you have a larger family.

Express Passes are a terrific feature. If you have the budget for them or for a Premier hotel, I do think it's money well spent here. If there’s one splurge you’re going to make, Express Pass should be it. Lines at Universal get very long.

7. Universal Orlando Hotels - New for 2025

Universal Orlando operates 11 hotels divided into 4 categories: Value Inn and Suites, Prime Value, and Signature. There are quite a few off-property hotels that can be booked as Universal packages as well; however, most of them are similar in cost and come with fewer perks. One of my favorite off-site hotels is the Drury Inn, which offers free breakfast and transportation. I have a video tour of this resort; I’ll link to it in the description.

Some of the off-site hotels are in less than desirable areas especially those on International Drive. So you really need to ask your travel agent about the good, the bad and the ugly here. Did I mention that I’m a travel advisor who lives in Orlando? Reach out to me now I have answers to all your questions.

I have stayed at most of the Universal hotels and enjoyed each one. Royal Pacific, Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, Sapphire Falls, and Helios Grand all make up the Premier hotel category. I don’t think you would be disappointed with any of them, they all feature exciting pools, and multiple onsite restaurants, and are close to at least one of the theme parks.

Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, and Portofino Bay hotels come with free Express Passes so you can skip the lines in the parks. This can save you up to $300 per person, per day. You can even buy 1 night at these resorts and you’ll get two days of free Express Passes included with your theme park admission. So you don’t have to stay in a Signature hotel the entire time, although I think you should if it fits your budget.

As of right now, Helios Grand and Sapphire Falls do not include these Free Express Passes.

You also get priority dining when staying at a Signature restaurant, this means you can walk up to any restaurant at Universal and City Walk, flash your room key, and you’ll automatically be bumped up to the top of the waitlist.

Speaking of CityWalk, this is Universal’s dining and nightclub district, located just outside Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios.

Portofino Bay Resort is considered to be the flagship hotel in the Signature Category. It has an Italian theme and a nice pool. Steven Spielberg personally supervised the design of this hotel and was instrumental in the creation of Universal Orlando Resort as a whole. The Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando offers a music-infused atmosphere that’s perfect for families, especially those with teens. This is my favorite hotel at Universal. The California mission-style design creates a chill vibe. It was designed to look like a rockstar’s mansion in California. Loews Royal Pacific Resort offers a tropical vibe with lush landscaping, several restaurants, and a lagoon-style pool. It’s another one of my favorite Premier resorts because it’s usually the least expensive, yet includes the valuable Express Pass.

Other Popular Hotels are Cabana Bay Beach Resort - a mid-century modern hotel that has 2 great pools, a 50’s style diner, a bowling alley, and even a fitness center that is also an actual museum of fitness guru Jack LaLanne. And Aventura Hotel is ideal for guests traveling without kids, though kids are certainly welcome here. It has a posh, hipster vibe, complete with a rooftop lounge overlooking Orlando. The room-service robots blew my mind.

Stella Luna opens on January 27, 2025, and Terra Lune opens on February 25, 2025. This hotel is located just outside Epic Universe while Helios Grand Hotel will be located inside Epic Universe. Helios Grand will open in May. Reservations for all three are already being accepted.

6: Planning for the Theme Parks and Epic Universe

Universal Studios Florida is a dynamic theme park inspired by the original Hollywood studios, featuring immersive lands based on iconic films and television shows. These include New York, Hollywood, and San Francisco, which capture the essence of major film backlots, as well as more unique areas like Minion Land, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, and Springfield U.S.A. (Home of The Simpsons).

Most guests head straight to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley and it’s easy to see why. With the thrilling Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts ride, the replica of King's Cross Station featuring the Hogwarts Express, and the magical Ollivander's wand selection ceremonies, this immersive area offers something for every Harry Potter fan.

Another standout attraction is the Revenge of the Mummy indoor coaster, which delivers high-speed thrills with a spooky twist. For a more classic, family-friendly experience, the E.T. Adventure dark ride offers a nostalgic journey that's perfect for all ages. Whether seeking thrills, magic, or timeless adventure, Universal Studios Florida has plenty to captivate every guest.

Some of my favorite shows here are Animal Actors which is often overlooked but super funny and a must if you love animals. Universal’s Horror Makeup show which is a hilarious special effects show, and the thrilling Bourne Stuntacular - has some of the best special effects I have ever seen.

If Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket is running during your visit, ride it. It’s closing permanently in 2025 to make way for a new coaster.

Universal’s Islands of Adventure, which opened in 1999 as the second theme park at Universal Orlando, offers a more action-packed experience than its sister park, Universal Studios Florida. With eight thrilling themed lands, including Marvel Super Hero Island, Jurassic Park, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade, Islands of Adventure is a haven for thrill seekers and fans of immersive storytelling.

While Universal Studios Florida captures the essence of movie magic, Islands of Adventure amps up the excitement with high-speed roller coasters, intense rides, and interactive experiences.

But it’s also home to the kid-friendly Suess Landing where you’ll find attractions based on The Cat in the Hat, one of my personal favorites, the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley, character meet and greets, and gift shops. This is where you can get those infamous Thing 1 and Thing 2 Shirts

Two of the most popular rides are Velocicoaster, which is Orlando’s most thrilling coaster by far, and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure which is heavy on the Harry Potter theme and packs a lot of thrilling surprises. Both are some of my favorite coasters I’ve ever been on.

5. Tips for Volcano Bay Water Park

A lot of theme parks today have water parks attached to them but Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay is truly unique. I think it’s the best water park in Orlando because the attractions are great and the line management system works flawlessly.

See, Volcano Bay uses a virtual line system so you’re not standing on the stairs all day waiting to ride a water slide. You enter virtual queues and get notified when it’s your time to ride. In the meantime, you’re free to explore other attractions in the park that don’t have lines like the wave pool or 1 of 2 lazy rivers.

4. Universal CityWalk

Just outside of Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, Universal CityWalk. It offers a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment, including the new Universal’s Great Movie Escape experience. My personal favorites are the Hard Rock Cafe which has the best burger I’ve ever had, of all time. And VooDoo Donuts, which serves crazy donut confections. I recommend doing a mobile order as the line gets super long.  You’ll also find Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, and the Universal Studios Store for souvenirs.

There are quite a few late-night nightclubs as well like the Cuban-themed Red Coconut Club for those ages 21+, and Rising Star Karaoke for those ages 18+

3. Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights draw hordes of thrill-seekers to Universal Studios Florida on select nights from August through Early November. I find it absolutely terrifying, I mean this is designed by Hollywood special effects artists.  But it’s a must-do during the Halloween season. There are usually about 10 immersive haunted houses and scare zones. If you don’t want to be too scared, avoid the Haunted HOuses and just take in the atmosphere of the scare zones. You can also sample some of the Halloween-themed snacks offered throughout the park. I highly recommend the event to anyone who enjoys scary movies though it’s not suitable for children under 13. This event draws a mostly adult crown so young kids will be out of place here.

One thing to keep in mind is that Universal Studios Florida will close very early when Halloween Horror Nights are being offered. Islands of Adventure will stay open later.

2. How Many Days are Needed at Universal

So how many days do you need at Universal Orlando? Well, this isn’t going to be a short answer, because we have Epic Universe opening halfway into 2025. So, in a pre-Epic Universe world, I recommend spending 3 full days at Universal, if you want to tour the parks at a relaxed pace. This will leave you plenty of time to enjoy the hotel and have some nice meals,,

And if you plan to visit Volcano Bay Water Park, I would plan on 3 to 4 days. Just keep in mind that If you’re traveling in the fall and winter, Volcano Water Park is often closed for cool weather. Volcano Bay is exhausting, so I don’t know if you’ll have the energy as a family to skip off to a theme park afterward.

Even if you don’t do Volcano Bay, I would still recommend a 3-day ticket. But if you want two days, it can be done, you’re going to need an Express Pass. See without Express Passes, you’ll spend an entire morning or afternoon just getting through the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. That will leave you with a half day to see the rest of the park. But with Express Pass, you’ll zip through the most popular attractions.

What about Epci Universe - well if you’re traveling after May 22, 2025, you should add an additional day just for this park. At a minimum I would plan on a 3-day ticket: 1 day for Islands of Adventure, 1 day for Universal Studios, 1 day for Volcano Bay, and 1 day for Epic Universe. So you will need a hotel reservation for at least 4 or 5 nights.

If you wart to come down for a long weekend and go a grueling pace, it’s possible. But just make sure you’re getting Express Passes.

1 Budget Planning

Theme park ticket prices keep rising, but I’ve found that Universal Orlando has some great deals for travelers looking to save on their Orlando vacation. Most of these special offers include ticket offers and discounts but usually require a minimum length of stay. If you book a Universal Orlando package, you’ll get benefits like Early Park Admission and complimentary transportation to the theme parks. The deposit to book your package is $50 per person. The final Balance is due by 45 days to check-in. I can schedule monthly payments for my clients so they can pay down the balance little by little.

Be sure to factor in dining costs, a lot of people spend way more than they thought. Theme parks are pricey, and you’ll be eating out all the time. Figure about $50 to $60 per person, per day. If you have a question about Universal Orlando, don’t keep it to yourself. I’ll be in the comments answering your questions along with some other Universal experts.

Budgeting is the hardest part of any vacation. I have a video titled What is the Real Cost of a Universal Orlando Vacation? I provide more budget planning tips and ways to save money. You can check out the video, the link is coming up right now. I’ll see you there!
