Ah, Utopia of the Seas! Just the name conjures images of boundless adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. I know many of you are already dreaming of stepping aboard this magnificent vessel, which is truly one of my personal favorites. A question I hear a lot, and a truly important one for first-time cruisers and seasoned sea-farers alike, is: "Which deck is the most convenient on Utopia of the Seas?"

Quick guide to the most convenient decks on Utopia of the Seas

It's a fantastic question, and one without a single, simple answer. Why? Because "convenience" is a personal preference! What's perfect for a family with young kids might be different for a couple seeking tranquility, or a group of friends ready to party.

But fear not, future Utopia adventurers! I'm here to break down the different zones of Utopia of the Seas and help you pinpoint the deck that will be most convenient for you.

Let's dive in!

Understanding Utopia's Layout: A Vertical Neighborhood

Think of Utopia of the Seas not just as a ship, but as a floating city with distinct neighborhoods on each deck. Royal Caribbean has masterfully designed the ship to spread out its incredible amenities, preventing overcrowding and creating unique experiences on different levels.

Here's a general overview of what you'll find on most cruise ships, and how it might apply to Utopia:

Lower Decks (Decks 3-5/6): Often home to the main dining rooms, guest services, shore excursion desks, and sometimes the casino or a theater. These decks are usually quieter.
Mid-Ship Decks (Decks 7-14/15): This is where you'll find a lot of staterooms, or as I like to call it, the hotel part of the ship. These decks might also have some specialty restaurants, lounges, or smaller public areas, but mostly just staterooms in this zone.
Upper Decks (Decks 15+): The party central! Think pool decks, the AquaTheater, Windjammer Marketplace, sports courts, FlowRider, and often the Solarium. These decks are buzzing with activity.

The Convenience Conundrum: What Matters Most to YOU?

To find your perfect deck, let's consider what "convenience" truly means for your cruise style:

1. For the Pool & Thrill Seekers: Embrace the Upper Decks!

If your dream cruise involves maximizing your time at the pools, braving the Perfect Storm waterslides, catching an AquaTheater show, or riding the FlowRider, then the upper decks (likely Decks 15-18) are going to be your prime real estate.

Pros: Steps away from all the action! Easy access to quick-service eateries, bars, and sun loungers.
Cons: Can be noisy during peak hours. Might experience more foot traffic outside your stateroom. Elevators can be busy during prime activity times.

Consider this: Imagine waking up and being just a short stroll from a refreshing dip or an exhilarating slide!

Central Park neighborhood on Deck 8 Utopia of the Seas — Central Park on Utopia of the Seas is a quiet, tranquil space. One of my favorite places of the entire ship.

2. For the Dining & Entertainment Enthusiasts: Central Park and Promenade Access!

If your vacation priorities revolve around dinner reservations, specialty dining, catching shows, and people-watching, you want to be close to the heart of the ship—the neighborhoods.

Deck 8 (Central Park): This is an oasis! Booking a stateroom on Deck 8 means you are steps away from the lush greenery, quiet walkways, and complimentary dining at Park Cafe. You're also perfectly situated near specialty restaurants like Chops Grille and Izumi.
- Pros: Quiet, nature-filled ambiance. Great dining access with minimal elevator use. Only one flight of stairs down to the Royal Promenade (Deck 5) or one flight up to the main stateroom decks.
- Cons: Some lower deck cabins might not have the best views.
Decks 5 and 6 (Royal Promenade & Boardwalk): While staterooms don't line the busiest parts of these decks, selecting a cabin on Deck 6 or 7 (with staterooms below Deck 8's Central Park or above Deck 4's entertainment) puts you right near the action.
- Deck 7: A nice middle ground—two flights down to the Royal Promenade (shops, bars, Guest Services) and one flight up to Central Park. This deck has staterooms both above and below it, which often means less noise from public venues.

3. For the Quiet & Motion-Sensitive Cruiser: The Mid-Ship, Cabin-Sandwiched Decks

If avoiding noise and minimizing the sensation of the ship's movement are your top priorities, then convenience takes on a different meaning: stability and tranquility.

The "Golden Middle" Decks (Decks 9, 10, 11, 12): These are the workhorse stateroom decks on Utopia.
- Look for a cabin that is mid-ship. This is the most stable part of the vessel, minimizing sway and rock.
- The most important rule for quiet is to be "sandwiched" between two other stateroom decks. On Utopia of the Seas, Deck 10 is an excellent choice, as it has staterooms on Deck 9 below it and Deck 11 above it, helping to dampen noise from public areas.
The Power of the Sandwich:
💡 Pro Tip: When looking at a deck plan, always check what is directly above and below your potential cabin. Avoid booking on a deck directly under the busy Pool Deck (Deck 15), the Windjammer Marketplace (Deck 15), or above a loud venue like the Casino or a Nightclub (Decks 4-5). Cabins on Deck 14 or Deck 6 may be more susceptible to noise from above or below, respectively.
I also recommend avoiding staterooms across from the elevators. The elevator banks are opened to the decks below and above - which looks cool, but it also allows noise to travel between decks quite easily. Noise from nightclubs on other decks can travel through the open elevator areas - so it’s better to avoid rooms directly across from the elevator banks. If you need to be near an elevator for convenience, choose a stateroom that is at least 5 doors down or so.

No matter which deck you choose, you're going to have an incredible time aboard this magnificent ship. Just be sure to study those deck plans before you book—a little research now pays off in huge convenience later!

For years, my content has been focused on the magic and logistics of the Orlando theme parks. But every so often, the Orlando Parks Guy needs a break from the land of endless fun to conquer the seas of endless fun. And I want to take you with me.

Today, I’m changing my usual flight path from Orlando International Airport (MCO) and doing something entirely new: I'm taking the high-speed rail service, Brightline, from my hometown straight to Miami for a magnificent voyage aboard Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest ship, the Wonder of the Seas.

This isn't just a trip; it's a deep dive into the logistics of cruising from Florida in 2024—from the train platform to the pool deck. Over the next five days, I’ll show you exactly what this Oasis Class mega-ship is like, bring you along on some of my favorite experiences, and share the behind-the-scenes tips you need to know. Most importantly, I’m going to make the case that this ship is a destination unto itself, one that truly must be seen to be believed.

DAY 1 — EMBARKATION: MIAMI

Our journey to the port begins not on the highway, but on the rail line. We’re taking Florida’s new high-speed train service, Brightline. For a family like mine, the convenience is a game-changer. We've all made that grueling 3- to 4-hour drive from Orlando to Miami, sitting in endless traffic, arriving stressed, and already tired before the vacation even starts. The Brightline completely eliminates that headache. It’s quiet, incredibly fast, and allows you to be productive—or just relax—while the landscape blurs past.

My family and I opted for Premium Class today, which I highly recommend. It gave us access to the exclusive lounge at MCO, a delicious continental breakfast, and premium seating on the train. The seats are spacious and comfortable, the WiFi is fast, and the ride itself is smooth. When you pass miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic on the roadways, you realize the time you saved and the stress you avoided. If you’re cruising from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, consider the train; it’s an exceptional way to kick off your vacation.

The Brightline station in Miami is conveniently located near the cruise terminals. Because I had checked in online with the Royal Caribbean app weeks ago, the physical process moved like clockwork. We checked our luggage curbside—a huge relief—and headed through security, which was as straightforward as an airport. Passports were scanned, our SeaPass cards were handed over, and within minutes, we were walking the gangway.

The Awe of the Royal Promenade

Walking onto the Royal Promenade on an Oasis Class ship, especially one as grand as Wonder of the Seas, is an awe-inspiring moment that every cruiser should experience. The space is a multi-deck marvel that stretches away from you—it’s not a hallway; it's a bona fide shopping mall. Shops, cafes, bars, and a sea of people moving with the energy of a city square. This is the moment where you realize two things: first, this is the start of something truly big, and second, this ship is unlike any other floating city you’ve seen.

We quickly completed the mandatory safety briefing at our muster station. It’s an essential formality, but I love how Royal Caribbean has made this a quick and efficient process through the mobile app. Our attendant was friendly, reviewed the life jacket procedure with a smile, and we were done in minutes.

Lunch was a quick but essential stop at Windjammer Marketplace. Embarkation day is always a busy one for the buffet, but it's also a great time to log into the Royal Caribbean mobile app and start booking onboard activities. Pro Tip: A lot of first-time cruisers overlook this step until Day 2 or 3 and end up missing out on prime booking slots. We devoured our fantastic lunch, but didn’t linger; we had priorities.

Checking Out the Kids’ Spaces

After lunch, we headed to Adventure Ocean for the open house. Even if you don’t have young children, it’s worth a look to see the detail and thought that went into these areas. The club spaces are bright and thoughtfully zoned by age: tiny play areas for toddlers, engaging activity rooms for elementary kids, and high-tech spaces for tweens. The staff are energetic, and you can immediately see why families feel comfortable leaving their little ones here. Next, we checked out Social 100, the dedicated teen hub. This space is brilliant, featuring two distinct areas: an indoor club pulsing with games and music, and The Patio, an outdoor lounge that truly comes alive after dark. For families traveling with teens, like us, this kind of separation is gold. It provides privacy for the grownups and an age-appropriate social scene for the kids. It’s the perfect blend of freedom and structure.

Our Home Away From Home

Soon after, I received a text message—the magical message every cruiser waits for: our rooms are ready. Riding the elevator up, passing all the themed decks, truly feels more like navigating a massive hotel than a cruise ship. For this sailing, we booked two rooms: a balcony cabin for Michele and me, and a snug but functional interior stateroom across the hall for Martin. That extra space makes a significant difference when you’ve got a teenager who values his own routine and a little privacy. The balcony room, of course, opens onto a beautiful ocean view, and both cabins have smart storage designs that make unpacking quick and painless—another key to a stress-free vacation.

With bags tucked away, we headed straight for the pool deck. The first-day energy is infectious: families crowd the slides, the music is pumping, and the water’s edge is a living postcard. It’s busy—Day 1 usually is—but that wonderful bustle is truly part of the excitement. We test the water slides for a minute, make a mental note to come back when the crowds thin out, and then head inside to get ready for dinner.

Dinner tonight was in the Main Dining Room. Service is always smooth, and the menus are dependable. We all went for the chicken parmesan tonight. It’s a family favorite, and Royal Caribbean does a great job with it.

After dinner, we wandered the top deck as the ship lights came on, the rail catching the city glow as Miami slowly slipped away into the horizon. The ship has its own nighttime rhythms: Michele headed to a show, I spent a few moments in the casino, and Martin immediately disappeared into Social 100 with his new friends. There’s a practical reason for teens to go that first night: the icebreakers and orientation events make it incredibly easy to meet people right away.

Later, we met up at Café Promenade for coffee and a low-key debrief of the day. The ship hummed beneath us as she sailed south towards the Bahamas. Day 1 was officially done, a seamless transition from Orlando to the open sea.

DAY 2 — SEA DAY ADVENTURE

I wake early on Day 2, the way I do on every sea day—the glorious quiet is the ship’s best amenity. Coffee in hand, I stand on our balcony and watch the sun lift over the horizon. Everything feels slow, perfectly paced, and utterly peaceful.

Sea days are for rediscovery. The pools are quiet in the early morning, towels are perfectly folded, and the crew is arranging chairs. We started with Windjammer for a full family breakfast—eggs, fruit, and crispy hashbrowns. The buffet is lively but calm; the mood is easygoing.

Behind the Scenes Tour

One highlight of our day was a behind-the-scenes tour of Wonder of the Seas. This is a special experience that truly puts the ship's scale into perspective. Walking through the main kitchen, the enormous bakery, and the refrigerated storage rooms reminds you just how much goes into feeding thousands of guests and crew members at sea. The bakery smells warm and sweet—and I was shocked to learn that everything is made from scratch, with the kitchens running 24 hours a day. Our guide explained how the ship carries extra provisions during hurricane season in case we need to be diverted. It’s a powerful reminder of the precision and logistics behind all the fun.

The kitchens operate 24 hours a day, with 3 shifts doing everything from food prep, cooking, to baking and clean up.

After the tour, we were scheduled for the rock climbing wall. It looks deceptively easier from the ground than when you're halfway up. The holds shrink as the wall tilts outward, and the blue ocean drops away thousands of feet behind you. Traveler Tip: The ship provides climbing shoes, but not socks—so plan ahead and bring a pair! The climb is exhilarating, and the perspective from the top is absolutely stunning.

We passed the water slides on our way to the Boardwalk, where a Family Fun Day was underway. These events fill the space with laughter, games, and the delicious smell of popcorn. We made a spontaneous stop at The Dog House for a grilled sausage—it’s an easy, handheld snack just because, well, it’s right there and it’s included. Nearby, Sugar Beach tempts with candy displays and bright colors. It's not included, but the prices are fair, and exploring a candy shop is always a fun little detour.

A Flight Over the Boardwalk

Lunch was again at Windjammer—variety is its real selling point, as you know from my other cruise videos. Afterward, I found time to try the famous zip line, a short but dramatic flight nine decks above the Boardwalk. It’s quick, exhilarating, and surprisingly scenic, but definitely not for the faint of heart! You have to see the footage of the view from the zip line in the video—it’s incredible.

By midafternoon, I’m in Central Park with a coffee. Real plants, quiet music, and warm sunlight filtering through the canopy—it’s easily my favorite quiet space on the ship, a true oasis within an oasis. Later, a nap felt unavoidable, which was perfect, as we had more plans this evening.

Dinner tonight was again in the Main Dining Room. Michele ordered shrimp, Martin went for steak, and I chose the butter chicken—a mild, flavorful Royal Caribbean classic that I always enjoy. Afterward, we wandered into the casino again—just long enough for a little bit of luck—then finished at Café Promenade for late-night pastries and coffee. The ship hummed a gentle lullaby, and we were rested and ready for our first port.

DAY 3 — NASSAU, BAHAMAS

Good morning from Nassau, Bahamas! Day 3 begins with a walk around the ship and then a run on the track. Roughly 2.4 laps equals one mile, and watching the harbor grow closer each lap feels incredibly motivating. The air is warm and humid, and the sunrise hits the ship just right.

Michele met me for coffee at Central Park Café—it’s calm and breezy, a rare quiet space onboard that we both cherish. After breakfast, we headed forward to the Solarium, the adults-only pool area. With its warm whirlpools, plenty of shade, and panoramic sea views, it’s an underrated place to relax before a port day. It’s where you go when you need a moment away from the main pool deck energy.

Next up: a fun, spontaneous pickleball tournament on the sports deck. It’s easy to join, incredibly social, and great fun with that endless ocean backdrop. The fact that the entire ship is full of easy-to-access activities like this is what sets an Oasis Class ship apart.

We’ve visited Nassau before, so today’s plan was simple: a short walk along Bay Street, a few souvenir shops, and my traditional Dairy Queen stop (a necessary ritual!). Disembarkation was quick and organized—tap your SeaPass, and you’re free to go.

Turning Ice into an Arena

The Laser Tag arena on Wonder of the Seas - a massive inflatable fortress. — The laser tag area is a giant inflatable fortress with several rooms and hiding spots. It’s great fun for everyone.

Back onboard, I grabbed a cappuccino from Starbucks on the Promenade, then headed to laser tag in Studio B. This is one of the coolest uses of space at sea—the actual ice rink is transformed into a glowing, multi-level arena for a battle between the aliens and the robots. Trust me on this: Book it as soon as you get onboard on Day 1 in the Cruise Planner; spots go fast. They can usually accommodate some walk-ups, but don't risk it!

Dinner was again in the Main Dining Room. Michele had bolognese, Martin took the steak, and I tried the risotto. It was reliable, well-prepared, and served with the consistency that makes Royal Caribbean’s dining team shine.

After dinner, we walked the Promenade—Boleros’ music spilled out, and the Bionic Bar drew a small crowd as the robotic arms mixed drinks with surprising efficiency. The Rising Tide Bar glided upward slowly between decks, carrying guests and drinks together in a silent ascent.

Later, Martin joined friends at the FlowRider surf simulator. Michelle and I did a little "spying" just to see how he did—a classic parent move. He was having a blast, and you have to watch the video to see the footage of the wipeouts!

We wrapped the night with a quick stop at Sorrento’s Pizza. Late-night slices are practically a cruise ritual on Wonder of the Seas. We ended the evening with a quiet stroll through Central Park, which is dramatically lit up at night. Fellow passengers were having romantic dinners in the specialty restaurants, and a soft jazz band played in the courtyard. It’s truly hard to believe this beautiful, serene garden is on a moving cruise ship, and it was a perfect way to end Day 3.

DAY 4 — PERFECT DAY AT COCOCAY

I’m up before sunrise with a coffee from Café Promenade, walking the ship while everyone is still asleep. There’s something special about watching an island appear from the deck—bright, turquoise water, soft light, and the promise of a perfect day ahead. We’re arriving at Royal Caribbean’s private island: Perfect Day at CocoCay.

We stepped off early and caught the tram to Hideaway Beach, the new adults-only section of CocoCay. This is a paid upgrade—it was $35 per person on this sailing—and I can tell you right now: It is worth it. It’s a world apart, offering calm water, an open infinity pool, food, music, and plenty of loungers, but never a crowd. If you're looking for an escape, this is it.

Martin joined us later at the main Oasis Lagoon, the massive family pool with built-in bar seating. The atmosphere here is livelier—families playing, DJ music, and a tropical energy that feels very different from other private islands.

We decided to skip Thrill Waterpark this time; we’ve done it before and wanted a more relaxed day. Instead, we wandered, swam, and stopped at Skipper’s Grill for lunch—burgers, salads, and plenty of shaded seating. Everything here is fantastic, but there’s also the Snack Shack, which serves one of my all-time favorite chicken sandwiches and some excellent mozzarella sticks. The best part? The Grand Finale Preparations

By early afternoon, we were back onboard. With most guests still on the island, the ship felt wonderfully empty—perfect for some final exploring.

We headed to the Ultimate Abyss, the dry slide that drops ten decks down. The thought of it is terrifying—a swirling slide on the side of a massive ship—but it’s actually more fun than scary. In fact, it looks much worse than it is, but it's a huge rush. You need to watch the video to truly appreciate the speed of the descent!

Afterward, Martin and I found ourselves in the arcade. We purchased game credits with our SeaPass Cards and ended up having some unexpected father/son time that became one of the unexpected highlights of the trip. It’s those little, unplanned moments that really stand out sometimes.

Dinner tonight was at The Mason Jar. It’s a specialty restaurant with Southern-inspired dishes and live country music. It’s rare for us to spring for specialty dining, but Royal Caribbean gave us a great special offer, and we decided to try it. I ordered the phenomenal fried chicken, Michele went for the salmon, and Martin stuck with a gourmet burger. It’s a warm, lively setting, and the service was beyond excellent.

After dinner, we made our way to the AquaTheater for the headline show, inTENse. This is one of the most elaborate performances at sea—synchronized swimmers, aerialists flying high above the deck, and high-diving acts that truly seem to defy gravity. We sat near the back for the wide view—a perfect balance of lighting, sound, and scale. I won't give away the climax, but trust me when I say you have to watch the video to believe the final high-dive act.

We ended the night playing mini golf on the top deck under the glow of neon lights. It was a fun, casual family moment. Before bed, a quick casino visit (with another little win!), then Café Promenade for one last dessert and coffee. We packed lightly for the morning and left our balcony door open to hear the ocean.

DAY 5 — FAREWELL

It’s the final morning, and that quiet buzz returns—the one that always comes at the end of a cruise. Breakfast was in the Main Dining Room—French toast, coffee, and a calm, unhurried goodbye to the trip.

Wonder of the Seas isn’t subtle—it’s engineered spectacle, delivered with precision and energy. But it’s also full of quiet corners, friendly crew, and a wonderful rhythm that allows you to slow down and take it all in. From the smooth ride down on Brightline to the dizzying heights of the Ultimate Abyss, this trip was a masterclass in modern cruising.

Before my first Royal Caribbean Cruise, I spent weeks poring over every document, website FAQ, and forum thread, trying to figure out all the little things that would make or break my trip. Now that I have quite a few cruises racked up, I want to share the ultimate first-timer’s guide using all the official information I gathered and experienced firsthand.

Consider this your comprehensive, first-person breakdown of every Royal Caribbean tip you need to know. We’re covering everything from the crucial wine allowance to the strict dress code and the non-negotiable rules about what not to pack. My goal is to save you the planning stress so you can focus on the fun!

Part 1: The Essential Countdown—Planning, Health, and Access

The success of your cruise begins long before you set foot on the ship. This section covers the foundational rules you need to know related to health, accessibility, and documentation. Get these details squared away, and you’ll eliminate most pre-cruise anxiety.

Navigating Special Accommodations and Access Needs

One thing that immediately impressed me about Royal Caribbean was their commitment to welcoming all guests, regardless of their needs. If you or someone in your party has a disability or a condition that requires special accommodations, you absolutely must communicate this with the cruise line well in advance.

To ensure you receive the appropriate assistance throughout your vacation, you need to notify Royal Caribbean International in writing of any disability or condition that may require advisable special accommodations. This isn't just a courtesy—it’s a necessary step to make sure they can prepare for your arrival and sailing.

The Access Department is your contact: I’ve included their contact information directly from the official guidance: you can call the Access Department at +1.866.592.7225 or +1.954.628.9708 from outside the U.S. or email them at special_needs@rccl.com or Fax +1.954.628.9622. They are the experts who can walk you through the options for your sailing.

A Crucial Warning About Tender Ports

This is an often-overlooked detail that can significantly impact guests with limited mobility. I learned that for guests with wheelchairs, scooters, and limited mobility, getting on and off the ship may be difficult—or in some cases, impossible—at certain ports of call that use tenders and gangways.

A tender is a smaller boat used to ferry guests from the ship to the shore when the ship cannot pull up to a pier. The process of transferring between the ship and the tender, and then the tender to the dock, can be unstable and unsafe for some mobility devices.

Check the Tender Access Information: If you rely on mobility assistance, you must review the cruise line’s specific guidance: see www.RoyalCaribbean.com/tenderaccess. This is an essential step to ensure you don’t book an excursion or a day trip for a port where you may not be able to safely disembark.

The Health Checklist: Infants and Pregnancy

If you're traveling with an infant or are pregnant, there are non-negotiable health policies you need to be aware of for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Infant Minimum Age: Generally, infants must be at least 6 months old as of the first day of the cruise and/or Cruisetour. However, for certain itineraries—like transatlantic, transpacific, Hawaii, select South America, and any cruise that has three or more consecutive days at sea—the infant must be at least 12 months old on the first day of the cruise/Cruisetour. If you are affected by this policy, you need to call the Resolution Agent at +1.800.327.6700.
Pool Policy for Children: Due to public health regulations, children who are not completely toilet trained are not permitted in the pools, whirlpools, or the H2O zone. Children who wear diapers are, however, welcomed to use the Baby Splash Zone on select ships.
Pregnancy Policy: Royal Caribbean International unfortunately cannot accept guests who will be more than 23 weeks pregnant at any time during the cruise or cruisetour. All guests are required to sign a health questionnaire at check-in to ensure they are aware of the pregnancy policy. If you’ve already booked and realize you won’t meet this requirement, you need to contact your Travel Agent or call +1.866.562.7625 and request a Resolution Agent.

I was initially confused about the various tips and charges, but here’s the breakdown of the gratuities on my Royal Caribbean sailing:

The Automatic Daily Service Charge

The main gratuity is an automatic charge added to your SeaPass® account daily. This fee is pooled and shared among the dining, bar, and culinary services staff, the stateroom attendants, and the many hotel services teams working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Standard Guests: A $18.00 per guest, per day gratuity will automatically be added to each guest's SeaPass® account.
Suite Guests: Suite guests will see a $20.50 daily gratuity.
Pre-Payment: This is a top tip for budgeting: if you prepaid your gratuities prior to boarding your cruise, you won't see a daily charge onboard. This is what I did, and it helped tremendously with budgeting.

Gratuities on Purchases

Beyond the daily service charge, there are automatic gratuities applied to various onboard purchases:

Beverages, Room Service, and Mini Bar: An 18% gratuity is also automatically added to the cost of these services. These gratuities are pooled and shared by various dining and beverage service staff.
Spa and Salon Services: A 20% gratuity is also automatically added to spa and salon purchases.
Other Service Personnel: Gratuities for other service personnel are entirely at your discretion.

The Credit Card Authorization Process

Just like at some land-based hotels, guests can expect to see an initial pending charge or authorization, also known as a temporary hold, on their credit card.

The Initial Hold: Temporary holds are placed on every card linked to your SeaPass Account and are used to secure funds for anticipated onboard purchases.
Additional Holds: Purchases made over the initial $100 will generate additional holds.
Release Time: Most holds are released within days after your cruise. However, if they aren't released promptly, you need to contact your bank or financial institution, as they manage the duration of these holds.

The Royal Caribbean Alcohol Policy (A Deep Dive)

This is the question every cruiser asks, and I'm giving you the official breakdown directly from the guidelines:

The Wine/Champagne Allowance

The Rule: On embarkation day, each guest of drinking age may bring one (1) sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne.
Prohibited Items: Boxed wine and other containers are prohibited.
Packing is Key: For your wine, it should be brought onboard via carry-on if possible. Luggage containing wine or champagne will not be delivered to your stateroom and guests will need to retrieve their luggage from security once the ship has set sail. That’s extra hassle on an exciting day, so stick it in your carry-on!
Consecutive Sailings: For consecutive sailings, guests of drinking age are allowed to bring one (1) 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne for each individual sailing. Additional bottles will be stored by the ship and delivered, one bottle at a time, to the stateroom on the first day of each new voyage. Guests bringing more than one bottle at the start of the first sailing should have documentation for any consecutive sailings available to share with security. Guests may request a corkscrew to use for opening bottles in their stateroom.

Non-Alcoholic Drinks and Other Policy Notes

The Limit: Guests may also bring non-alcoholic beverages as carry-on items on boarding day. Non-alcoholic beverages may not exceed 12 standard (17 oz.) cans, bottles or cartons per stateroom. Milk and distilled water brought on for infant, medical, or dietary use are permitted.
Onboard Purchases: Guests who purchase alcohol bottles onboard, in a port-of-call, or bring more than the one permitted bottle on boarding day, will have their items safely stored by the ship. These bottles will be returned on the last day onboard.
The Drinking Age Varies: The minimum drinking age is 21 onboard sailings from the United States, Canada, or the United Arab Emirates. On sailings departing from the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand, it is 18, unless the homeport's legal drinking age is higher than 18, then the higher age applies. The above ages also apply for possession of alcohol.

The Strict Rules on Drones

I saw a few people asking about bringing their drones, and the policy is incredibly clear and strict: Drones are not to be operated onboard the ship at any time, nor on Royal Caribbean's private destinations: Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas or Labadee, Haiti.

Where you can use them: Guests are welcome to bring drones on their cruise for use on land only and outside of the port area.
Storage and Penalties: While onboard, the drone must be stored safely in the stateroom. Drones used on the ship will be confiscated until the end of the cruise. You will also be issued a Guest Conduct Policy warning and guests may be subject to disembarkation at their own expense for onboard drone usage.
Liability: Guests assume full responsibility for understanding all local authority rules related to drone usage and for obtaining any required permissions. Different countries may have different rules. Royal Caribbean assumes no liability for guest drones that may be confiscated by local authorities for violating local laws.

Part 3: Packing Like a Pro—Dress Code and Luggage Hacks

Packing for a cruise is different from packing for a hotel stay. You need to plan outfits for three distinct dress codes, pack for multiple climates (if you're on a diverse itinerary), and manage your luggage efficiently in a small stateroom.

Mastering the Royal Caribbean Dress Codes

When you're on board, the right look varies by venue. Here is how I organized my outfits for the three suggested types of attire:

1. Casual: The Vacation Standard

What it means: You’re on vacation—relax! This is your go-to look for the daytime and for dinner in the Windjammer Buffet.
What to wear: Jeans, shorts, tees, tank tops, polo shirts, sundresses, and blouses are all considered laid back and appropriate.
The Big Rule: You must keep swimwear to the Pool Deck.

2. Smart Casual: Dinner Dress Code

This is the standard for most evenings in the Main Dining Room and is a step up from your typical dinner wear.

What to wear: This is the time to dress to impress. Think: jackets, sports coats, blazers, collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

3. Formal: Dress Your Best

This is your chance to shine and make it a special night out!

What to wear: This is the best black-tie look. I saw suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, or evening gowns.

Luggage and Medication Advice

Efficient packing is essential. I learned two key things about handling luggage and medications.

Baggage Limits and the Overnight Bag

The Limit: Each guest is permitted to carry onboard the vessel or check-in only the wearing apparel and personal effects reasonably necessary for the cruise.
The Overnight Bag: I recommend bringing an overnight bag for your last night at sea. Staff will collect your large luggage the night before disembarkation, and you will need an overnight bag to carry your night clothes and toiletries.
Crucial Documents: You should always personally carry any boarding documentation (passports, visas, citizenship documents, family legal documents).

Medication Storage and Clothing

Carry-On is Key: I suggest that guests transport all their medications in their carry-on luggage to minimize the potential for diversion or loss.
Extra Supply: It is also advisable to pack at least three days of extra medication in the event of an unexpected change in the itinerary of the voyage.
Shoes and Swimsuits: Shoes should be low-heeled for deck activities. Bring a few swimsuits so you will always have a dry one.
Weather: Ashore, you'll need comfortable walking shoes. If cruising a warm weather destination, bring a hat for protection. If your cruise will take you to Alaska, Canada & New England, or Northern Europe, be sure to pack a jacket and several sweaters.

Part 4: The Boarding & Sailing Experience—Logistics and Safety

Once you've boarded, there are a few key logistical steps and safety protocols you must complete to officially start your vacation.

Embarkation: Arrival and Visitors

Arrival Time: For your comfort and your convenience, we recommend that you arrive to the pier within your selected arrival time. Early arrivals may have a prolonged wait time in potentially warm or inclement weather conditions.
No Visitors: No visitors are permitted onboard.

The Mandatory Safety Briefing (Muster Drill)

All guests must attend the mandatory safety briefing (also known as: Muster/Assembly Drill) and follow all health and safety instructions issued by the Captain. Royal Caribbean has streamlined this process with their patented eMuster™ system (on applicable ships).

The Two-Step Process: Upon embarkation, guests will have a window of several hours during which they must:
1. Review essential safety information, often by viewing a safety video via the mobile app or stateroom myTV interactive systems.
2. Report to their designated muster station.
Failure to Complete: Guests who do not complete the safety video portion via eMuster™, or who are otherwise unable to review essential safety information upon embarkation, will be required to participate in a brief safety presentation upon arrival at their designated muster station. The mobile guest application is available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Staying Informed: The Cruise Compass

The Cruise Compass is your daily guide to everything happening on the ship, designed to keep you informed of activities and events.

The App is Best: You can check out daily activities and events, entertainment shows, and so much more via the Royal Caribbean app on your phone.
Printed Copies: You can also find a printed copy of the Cruise Compass by the Guest Services area.

Disembarkation: Don't Rush Your Travel Plans

The last morning is bittersweet, and the process of leaving the ship is heavily dependent on outside factors.

Timing: Disembarkation typically begins hours after the final arrival time and is subject to change, as it is contingent on the completion of customs and port clearances.
Planning Transportation: You must plan your transportation with enough time to allow for this process. Your assigned disembarkation time will be communicated to you once you are onboard. If you have any special requests, your crew onboard will be happy to assist.

Part 5: Protecting Paradise—The Non-Negotiable Sustainability Tip

My final, and perhaps most important, piece of advice concerns the environment. Royal Caribbean is dedicated to ocean health through its Save the Waves program.

Don't Throw Anything Overboard: The most basic rule is to refrain from throwing anything overboard, both in port and at sea, and to deposit all trash in the proper receptacles.

The Sunscreen Chemicals You MUST AVOID

To protect the destinations we visit, Royal Caribbean recommends avoiding sunscreens containing specific ingredients. This is vital information for any Caribbean cruise or stop in a sensitive environment.

I’ve broken down the three chemicals they recommend avoiding and exactly why they are so harmful:

Petrolatum (aka Mineral Oil): This chemical takes a very long time to biodegrade once it gets into the ocean. Worse, it is often harmful or even fatal to local wildlife.
Titanium Dioxide: This common ingredient does not biodegrade and is harmful to all sea life.
Oxybenzone, Octocrylene, and Octinoxate: These three chemicals are the most notorious. They are banned from use in some locations because they cause significant damage to reef systems.

My Personal Takeaway: Don’t risk it. By being mindful of what you apply, you help ensure these beautiful destinations remain pristine for future cruisers.

A cruise vacation is truly an all-inclusive experience that is unlike any other. Don't let the last day of your Royal Caribbean cruise be stressful! Get the ultimate insider's guide to easy debarkation from Port Canaveral, including MCO airport transfer schedules, luggage rules, and tips.

It’s the day we all dread: the end of the cruise. While no one wants to leave their floating paradise, making your departure as smooth as possible is key to ending your vacation on a high note.

Royal Caribbean has a system in place to make the process a more gradual and less chaotic flow. Here is my complete guide, pulling directly from the ship's instructions, on how to make your final morning absolutely seamless. ⏰ The Most Important Times to Know

First things first: you must be out of your cabin by 8:00 am. Once you've had breakfast, you'll head to your designated departure lounge to wait for your group.

Royal Caribbean assigns every single guest a specific departure group and time. You can easily find your assigned time in a few spots:

Stateroom Television: Tune to channel 2 until 8:00 am for the continually updated schedule.
Onboard Screens: Check elevator lobby screens and other digital screens throughout the ship.
Royal Caribbean App: You can also review your departure information right in the app for a quick experience.

The regular, assigned departure times are estimated to begin around 7:30 am and conclude by 9:00 am. When your number is called, you'll proceed to the gangway on Deck 5.

🚶 Self-Assist: How to Walk Off the Cruise Ship Yourself

Want to avoid the crowds and long wait times? I always recommend the Self-Assist Departure program when possible. The concept is simple: you keep all of your luggage with you and simply walk off the ship as soon as the announcement is made.

Once the announcement is made (or you get an app notification), head directly to the gangway on Deck 5 with all your bags.

Important Caveats: This quick option is not available if you require wheelchair assistance, are utilizing Royal Caribbean airport transfers, or are on a Royal Caribbean shore excursion.

🧳 Regular Departure: Luggage Assistance

If you have a lot of bags, or if the Self-Assist option isn't available to you, the Regular Departure process is just as easy:

The Night Before

Bags Out by 10:00 pm: If you're using the luggage assistance, be sure to leave your bags (with your assigned tags attached!) outside your stateroom door by 10:00 pm.
What to Keep: You must keep your travel documents, valuables, essential medications, and your invoice (which will be emailed by the end of your cruise) with you.
Carry-On Tip: Make sure to place one of your luggage tags on your carry-on bag, as this clearly identifies your departure group.
A Must-Do: Guests using Royal Caribbean airport transfers, shore excursions, or requiring wheelchair assistance must check their bags the night before.

If you are taking independent transportation, claim your baggage at the area identified by the number on your luggage tag at the terminal, then proceed to your transportation.

Royal Caribbean Airport Transfers: These are a fantastic option to get you to the airport right on time. You can book them at Guest Services until 11:30 am the day before departure.

Important Tips Before Getting off the Ship

For your final day, keep in mind several important notes specific to certain guests and Customs requirements.

If you are a Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, or Diamond Plus Crown & Anchor guest, you should use the Royal Theater on Deck 4 between 7:30 am and 9:00 am for your departure.

Guests requiring wheelchair assistance should meet at the Spotlight Karaoke on Deck 5 during the same 7:30 am to 9:00 am window , while Star and Sky Class guests should consult their concierge for personalized departure details.

Consecutive Cruisers, who are staying onboard, will find their specific meeting place and time in a letter delivered to their stateroom.

Before leaving your cabin, always check for valuables stored in the safe and leave the safe door open. If any items were confiscated prior to your sailing, you can collect them at the terminal on the morning of departure.

Finally, be aware of Customs Allowance regulations as you disembark: U.S. guests must declare purchases exceeding $800 USD, and adhere to specific limits on items like cigarettes, non-Cuban cigars, and alcohol , while Canadian guests have similar declaration limits for purchases exceeding $800 CAD and specific limits for tobacco, liquor, and beer/ale.

Furthermore, any U.S. or Canadian guest carrying over $10,000 in cash, money orders, or traveler's checks must declare it upon arrival using Form 60598 and FinCEN105, which can be picked up at the Guest Services desk.

If you’ve ever tried to plan an Orlando vacation lately, you know the sticker shock is real. Between theme park tickets, hotel rates, and food costs, that “family trip of a lifetime” can quickly feel like a luxury purchase. So I wanted to find out — can you still have a premium Orlando vacation for around $5,000?

To answer that, I did the research myself and compared four very different ways to spend a family vacation in Central Florida: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Cruise Line. Each one came in right around $5,000, but the experiences couldn’t be more different.

What a $5,000 Orlando vacation looks like.

Disney Cruise Line: The Disney Wish

Let’s start at sea. I priced out a 3-night sailing aboard the Disney Wish leaving July 3 from Port Canaveral, visiting Nassau and Castaway Cay. This was for a family of four in an interior room on Deck 2 midship, totaling $5,032.32.

And yes — that’s over $5,000 for just three nights. But before you scroll away, remember that Disney Cruises are nearly all-inclusive. You’re getting top-notch entertainment, themed dining, Broadway-style shows, and private island access at Castaway Cay. For families who want Disney-level service and character experiences without tackling the parks, this is a compact, premium option.

If you want a longer cruise, I also checked a 4-night version of this same itinerary sailing July 6, which came out to $7,017, and a 7-night Disney Treasure sailing starting July 4, totaling $10,287. Clearly, the three-night cruise fits that $5,000 budget best — but you’ll have to decide if that short trip is worth the cost.

Universal Orlando Resort: Stella Nova, Cabana Bay, or Royal Pacific

Next, I compared Universal Orlando, where the newest park, Epic Universe, is set to change the game in 2025.

For this comparison, I looked at a 6-night stay from July 5–11 at the brand-new Stella Nova Resort, which is Universal’s newest Prime Value hotel. It came out to $4,882.53 including 5-day Park-to-Park tickets for the whole family.

Stella Nova is located just minutes from Epic Universe and connected by a dedicated busway that makes getting around incredibly easy. You can hop from your room to the parks in minutes without ever driving or dealing with parking.

If you want to upgrade, Cabana Bay Beach Resort gives you access to its retro-themed pools and lazy river, while Royal Pacific Resort — a Premier hotel — includes Express Passes for every guest, letting you skip most lines.

Universal gives you a mix of flexibility and thrills, with enough options to fit a family’s comfort level and still stay close to the new park everyone’s talking about.

Royal Caribbean: Utopia of the Seas

Now let’s talk cruising — but this time with Royal Caribbean. I compared a 4-night Utopia of the Seas sailing departing July 7 from Port Canaveral, visiting Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. The total? $4,998 for an interior room for four guests.

The thing that stands out with Royal Caribbean is just how much is included. You’ve got meals, shows, and entertainment all covered. The kids can hit the water slides or surf simulators while you relax at the adults-only pool or grab a cocktail on the Boardwalk.

Royal Caribbean delivers a floating resort experience that feels truly all-inclusive — and for the same price as a mid-level Orlando theme park trip, it’s hard to argue with the value.

If your family likes adventure and freedom rather than sticking to a schedule, this one’s tough to beat.

Walt Disney World: The Gold Standard

Finally, we’ve got the one and only Walt Disney World. I priced two realistic options for a 6-night stay from July 6–12 for a family of four.

Option one: Pop Century Resort, one of Disney’s Value properties, came out to $4,986.10 with 6-day park tickets and the Quick Service Dining Plan included. Pop Century is perfect for families who want to be surrounded by Disney theming, easy Skyliner access to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, and predictable pricing.

Option two: Coronado Springs Resort, a beautiful Moderate hotel with Spanish-inspired architecture, came out to $5,007.65 for the same dates and tickets. You’ll get upgraded dining, larger rooms, and a more relaxed resort vibe — but without losing access to all the perks, like Early Theme Park Entry and extended evening hours at select parks.

When you factor in the park experiences, transportation, dining, and resort atmosphere, Disney World ends up being the most complete and balanced vacation on the list. It’s the one destination that gives you full control over your budget and daily experience — whether you’re rope-dropping Magic Kingdom or just taking it slow by the pool.

So Which Vacation Wins?

All four options are amazing in their own way — it just depends on what kind of family you are.

If you love characters, storytelling, and all-inclusive comfort, Disney Cruise Line is unmatched.
If you’re all about thrills and new attractions, Universal Orlando and Epic Universe will be irresistible.
If you want everything wrapped into one floating resort, Royal Caribbean gives you the most bang for your buck.
And if you want that iconic Orlando experience, Walt Disney World still reigns supreme — especially with the dining plan returning.

So yes — a $5,000 premium Orlando vacation is absolutely possible. You just have to pick your flavor of magic.

#7 – What Most Passengers Don’t Know About the Medical Center

Every cruise ship has a medical center, but it’s not like a full hospital. It’s designed for basic care, emergencies, and stabilizing patients until they can reach a port.

What most people don’t realize: visits can be very expensive and are billed out-of-pocket if your insurance doesn’t cover travel.

💡 Pro Tip: Always travel with insurance that includes cruise medical coverage — even if you’re only cruising to the Caribbean.

#6 – Crew Members Work Long Hours Behind the Magic

#5 – That “Free” Cabin Upgrade Isn’t Always a Deal

You might be offered a last-minute upgrade for what seems like a small fee — but here’s the catch: those “deals” often come with trade-offs.

You could lose your preferred cabin location, your connecting room, or even end up under a noisy deck area. Always double-check before saying yes to an upgrade.

💡 Pro Tip: If you love your current cabin, keep it. Not every “upgrade” is actually better.

#4 – Onboard Wi-Fi Is a Profit Center

Cruise Wi-Fi has come a long way, especially with Starlink internet now rolling out on major lines. But it’s still pricey — and the “unlimited” plans often come with restrictions like no streaming or video calls.

Baby Bay: A safe splash zone for toddlers.

Every Star of the Seas itinerary includes a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private Bahamian island. Families can enjoy:

For thrill-seekers, Category 6 is the largest waterpark at sea, with record-breaking slides like Frightening Bolt and Pressure Drop, plus two raft slides for the whole family.

3. AquaTheater Show – Torque

Torque is a high-energy, action-packed show in a massive aquatic theater. It’s filled with stunts, diving, and acrobatics—perfect for kids who don’t love traditional stage shows.

Absolute Zero offers two family favorites:

Where to Dine for Free on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas

Sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas? You don’t have to spend extra to eat well! I explored every included dining spot onboard — from buffets and pizza to tacos and elegant dinners. Here’s my first-hand guide to the best free restaurants so you can plan your perfect foodie cruise.

If you’re like me, one of the best parts of cruising is the food. And on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, there’s no shortage of incredible included dining options. That’s right — many of the best meals onboard are already covered in your cruise fare. As someone who loves both eating well and saving money, I made it my mission to try all the Utopia of the Seas restaurants where you can dine for free.

Below, I’m sharing my favorites — from poolside snacks to elegant dinners — so you can plan your foodie adventure at sea.

Windjammer Marketplace

The Windjammer is my go-to spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It’s buffet-style, with a massive variety of dishes from around the world. I love grabbing a plate of fresh fruit in the morning or sampling new international flavors at night.

Main Dining Room

Every evening brings a new three-course menu — and it’s all included. Think lobster tail on formal night, filet mignon, or escargot. The atmosphere is beautiful, but there’s no strict dress code, so I often keep it casual.

Sorrento’s Pizza

Located on the Royal Promenade, Sorrento’s serves pizza until late at night. Perfect after a show or a few hours of dancing.

Café Promenade

Open 24 hours, this spot keeps me fueled with coffee, pastries, and light bites.

Park Café

Tucked in Central Park, it’s quieter and perfect for breakfast or a light lunch. Don’t miss the fresh salads and sandwiches.

Solarium Bistro

Mediterranean-inspired and steps from the adults-only Solarium — I come here for fresh Greek salads, tzatziki, and lamb chops.

El Loco Fresh

Poolside tacos, burritos, and nachos? Yes, please.

Boardwalk Dog House

Gourmet hot dogs with a variety of toppings. A must-try on a sunny day.

The Spare Tire

This new poolside food truck has incredible pulled pork sandwiches and flatbreads.

Room Service (Some Items)

Continental breakfast is free — great for slow mornings on the balcony.

Star of the Seas Arrives in Puerto Rico

Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Star of the Seas, made a stunning arrival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, ahead of her highly anticipated debut from Port Canaveral. This next-generation Oasis Class vessel is set to sail exciting Caribbean itineraries, giving cruisers a sneak peek at her ports of call before she begins regular voyages from Florida.

Star of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon-class vessel, recently made a technical call at the port of Ponce, Puerto Rico, marking a key step as it prepares for its official debut.

The ship arrived on August 4, 2025, after crossing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.

According to local reports, the Star of the Seas will remain docked in Ponce for three days.

Prior to its Puerto Rican stop, the LNG-powered ship also conducted a technical visit to Cadiz, Spain.

The vessel, delivered by the Meyer Turky shipyard in July 2025, is set to welcome its first paying passengers on August 16, 2025.

On that date, it will commence a series of preview cruises from its homeport at Port Canaveral, featuring three- and four-night itineraries that include stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

Following its preview cruises, the Star of the Seas will be christened by singer and actress Diana Ross, its godmother, before embarking on its maiden official cruise on August 31, 2025.

As the second ship in the Icon-class series, Star of the Seas is designed to offer weeklong Caribbean voyages from Port Canaveral. The itineraries will cover a variety of destinations in both the Western and Eastern Caribbean, including San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Cozumel, Mexico; and Basseterre, St. Kitts. Every cruise will feature a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Royal Caribbean continues to expand the Icon-class fleet, with two more ships expected to join Star of the Seas in the near future, promising to further enhance Caribbean cruising options from Florida.

The first to debut will be the new Legend of the Seas, scheduled to begin service in the Mediterranean in 2026.

This ship will mark a significant addition to Royal Caribbean's fleet, offering enhanced features and experiences tailored to the Mediterranean cruising market.

Following the Legend of the Seas, a fourth, yet-to-be-named vessel is planned to enter service in 2027, continuing the expansion and modernization of the fleet.

Both ships are expected to deliver innovative amenities and cutting-edge design, further elevating the cruising experience for guests in the upcoming years.

What to Do in Nassau Bahamas WITHOUT a Cruise Excursion (2025 Walking Tour)

Explore Nassau, Bahamas without a shore excursion! Here's what cruise passengers can see on foot, from the Straw Market to Atlantis and more.

Today I’m in Nassau, Bahamas, and I don’t have a single excursion booked. But here’s the thing… I don’t need one. I’m going to show you a few places you can explore all on your own, and have a great time on your port day, especially if you’re a first-time cruiser.

Hello and welcome back to the channel, and welcome to Nassau. Most of the cruisers are headed off to beach resorts, but I like to walk around the port area in the morning, then head back to the ship for lunch and enjoy the ship with fewer people onboard. Whether you're cruising with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, or Norwegian, everything I visit today is close to the cruise port.

Here are 6 things you can do without an excursion in Nassau.

#6 Port Marketplace

Once you’re on the pier you'll walk straight into the brand new Port Marketplace — and this is a huge upgrade from what Nassau used to be like.

The Bahamian Port Authority recently gave this entire area a major facelift. It’s cleaner, better organized, and feels a lot safer and more welcoming than it did just a few years ago.

You’ll find colorful buildings and plenty of shops selling local souvenirs, T-shirts, tropical drinks, ice cream, artisan soaps, seashells, and jewelry.

There’s even a designated area for hair braiding now — something that used to take place in a makeshift park across the street in a park. Now it’s all been moved into a proper space right here in the marketplace, which makes the whole experience more comfortable for everyone. Braids start around $40. While my wife gets her hair braided, my son and I like to walk around and check out the different stalls.

The Global Porter is one of my favorites - it’s one of the larger shops in the port - it’s like a department store with things you can wear, collectables, and even things for your house. The Port Marketplace leads you to the Straw Market and taxi depot. It’s so easy to find the Straw Market now.

#5 Straw Market

And speaking of the Straw Market, now is a great time to walk across the street and check it out. So, here you leave the actual port complex, and you’re officially in the city of Nassau. This indoor market is packed wall-to-wall with vendors selling things like handwoven straw bags, hats, wood carvings, T-shirts, and souvenirs with your favorite island slogans.

It’s lively, it’s crowded, and yes — it can feel a little overwhelming if you’re not used to being in close quarters. But that’s part of the experience.

Most of the items you see here are negotiable, so don’t be afraid to politely haggle. Just keep in mind — many of the vendors are selling very similar merchandise, so take your time, compare prices, and if you’re after something unique or handmade, be sure to ask who made it.

The Straw Market isn’t air-conditioned, so if you’re looking for that classic Bahamian market atmosphere, this is it.

Straw work has been part of island life here for centuries, But the actual Straw Market as we know it began in the 1940s, when the tourism industry started to grow and locals began selling their handwoven crafts directly to visitors.

This all started with a handful of women selling handmade goods under umbrellas. Today, it’s a symbol of local entrepreneurship, especially for Bahamian women. You’ll notice that the stalls in here are all women-owned, keeping the tradition alive even today.

I hope I don’t spoil any nostalgia here, but the current building is actually relatively new, built after a devastating fire destroyed the original structure in 2001.

And while you will find plenty of mass-produced souvenirs these days, there’s still genuine handmade work here if you look for it — like intricately woven bags, dolls, and even name-customized items made right on the spot.

It’s well worth a walk through if you want to take home something with a story behind it.

Once you’ve had your fill of browsing the Straw Market, it’s an easy walk just a few blocks west along the waterfront to one of Nassau’s newest attractions — the Margaritaville Beach Resort.

#4 British Colonial Hotel

On the way to Margaritaville, you’ll pass by the beautiful British Colonial Hotel.

This modern, family-friendly spot is open to the public, and even if you’re not staying here, there’s plenty you can check out — including the lobby and grounds.. Let’s head that way.”

If you're a hotel buff like I am, you’ll love the details here — elegant columns, polished marble floors, a painted ceiling above the check-in desk, and thoughtfully curated artwork throughout.

The British Colonial Hotel was originally built in 1924 on the site of Old Fort Nassau, which dated back to the 1600s. The fort was demolished, and the hotel was constructed as part of Nassau’s growing appeal to international travelers.

Over the decades, it’s hosted British royalty, world leaders, and Hollywood stars. In fact, it even had a cameo in the James Bond film 'Never Say Never Again' with Sean Connery.

After a few ownership changes and a closure during the pandemic, the hotel underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2024, restoring much of its historic charm while adding modern amenities.

The British Colonial Hotel was considered Nassau’s most luxurious hotel for many years.

Now, while the hotel does technically have a beachfront, it’s not exactly the postcard-perfect Bahamas setting. You’re basically looking out over the harbor and the cruise ships. Still, for anyone who enjoys a bit of architecture and history — or just wants to cool off in a gorgeous air-conditioned space — the British Colonial is a great stop on your Nassau walking tour.

#3 Margaritaville Resort

Just a few more minutes down the road and we’ve arrived at Margaritaville Beach Resort Nassau — one of the most popular new stops for cruise travelers looking to enjoy some off-ship relaxation.

Even if you’re not staying here, the lobby is open to the public — and it’s definitely worth walking through. You’ll find that signature Margaritaville flip-flop - each resort has one in a unique color. Ours in Orlando is ruby red. : It’s great for some photo ops while you're here.

Just beyond the lobby, the resort opens up to an impressive pool deck and water park that overlooks the harbor. There’s a lazy river, water slides, a FlowRider surf simulator, and plenty of loungers and cabana rentals if you’re just looking to chill.

Now, here’s the important part — you can’t access the pool or water park unless you purchase a day pass, which is available directly through the resort or through some cruise lines as an excursion add-on. Prices vary, but it’s generally one of the more expensive day pass options in Nassau - somewhere around $120 per person.

Still, even without a pass, walking through Margaritaville is a great way to soak in some tropical energy, grab a drink at the bar, or just enjoy exploring a nice hotel before heading back toward the ship.

#2 Bay Street

On the way back we’ll stop at Bay Street to hit the shops. But first, I see one more attraction I must stop at —Dairy Queen. I love Dairy Queen - it’s the one chain restaurant we don’t have in Orlando, so I have to make a stop. And just for fun, there’s even a McDonalds across the street.

I pass by the Pirates of Nassau Museum, I’ve been here before and it’s a great time - lots of detailed exhibits inside, and it’s especially fun for kids. It’s just a block off Bay Street is one of Nassau’s most unique attractions.

It dives into the Golden Age of Piracy — when Nassau was once a real pirate stronghold. If you think learning about some real pirates is pretty cool, hit that like button.

As we make our way back toward the heart of town, we’re walking along Bay Street, Nassau’s main shopping corridor — and, this is where you’ll find the usual mix of jewelry stores, designer brands, and locally-owned souvenir shops.

If you’re looking for Pandora charms, perfume, watches, or luxury sunglasses, you’ll find them here — often at better prices than back home.. Just be prepared: some shops can be a bit pushy, especially the larger jewelry retailers that cater heavily to cruise passengers.

You’ll also spot smaller, independent shops selling T-shirts, sneakers, rum cakes, and handmade goods, though prices can vary.

Even if you’re not shopping, Bay Street is a great place for people-watching and soaking in a bit of the local rhythm. It’s one of the busiest streets in Nassau — and it connects many of the attractions we’ve been visiting today.

The casino at Atlantis Resort offers a vibrant gaming experience with a wide range of slots, table games, and poker in an upscale, tropical setting.

#1 Atlantis Resort

Atlantis is pretty much an all-morning visit by itself, maybe combined with a walk down Bay Street. Rather than take a taxi, we hopped on a water taxi right from the pier to Paradise Island — the easiest and most scenic way to get to Atlantis Resort from the cruise port.

The boat ride itself is half the fun. You’ll cruise right past the harbor and get up close and personal with the massive cruise ships — it’s a whole different perspective seeing them from the water.

Once you arrive at Atlantis, there are a few things you can explore without a day pass. The Marina Village is open to the public — a pastel-colored shopping and dining district where you can stroll past luxury yachts. There’s a Starbucks here with indoor and outdoor seating.

Inside Atlantis, you enter through and browse high-end shops like Balenciaga, Rolex, and other designer names.

The casino is also open to the public, and you’re free to play here. If you came on a Disney ship and miss having a casino, this is your chance to try your luck. Even if you’re not playing casino games, you can still walk through and enjoy the air conditioning and sculptures.

That said, the main parts of the resort — including the aquarium, water park, hotel lobby, and beach access — are all off-limits unless you’ve purchased a day pass or are staying at the resort. A pass to the water park, beach, and pool will run about $250 per person.

Still, it’s a fun little adventure, and the whole experience — including the boat ride — makes it feel like you’ve gone much farther from port than you actually have

So there you have it — a few places to explore while walking around in Nassau, all on foot or by water taxi, and no excursion needed. From local shopping to historic hotels, from resort walk-throughs to pirate history and yacht spotting, there’s actually a lot you can see here on your own.

If it’s your first time in Nassau, here are a few quick tips:

☀️ Wear sunscreen — the sun here is no joke, and you’ll be walking a lot.

💵 Bring small bills — cash is helpful at the Straw Market and for tipping, but most shops accept cards. US currency is fine.

🚶 Don’t be afraid to explore — most of the popular spots are within easy walking distance, and the area around the port has become much cleaner, safer, and more tourist-friendly in recent years.

🚤 And if you’re up for it, take that water taxi to Atlantis. Even if you can’t access the full resort, the views alone are worth the trip. It’s a fun mini-excursion that you can do.
