Epcot's Pavilion Icons Will Return

Epcot’s Pavilion Icons are returning. Here’s a look at the new designs

Today I’m excited to share with you a little secret from Walt Disney Imagineering: Epcot’s pavilion icons are returning! Longtime fans of Epcot are familiar with the pavilion icons, like the ones you see here from the 1980s.

Epcot Pavilion Icons ©D23 / Disney

Recently Disney has hinted that some new icons are in the works. More will be revealed at the D23 Expo so stay tuned!

Epcot is special to me for a lot of reasons – as one of Walt’s final projects, and as an exclusive part of the Walt Disney World Resort, and it’s the park I remember the most from my childhood. I’m excited about the changes coming to Epcot including the transformation taking place inside the park’s entrance, and the new Play Pavilion where Wonders of Life is today. As great as Epcot is, the park lost way over the years.

But the Imagineers in charge of Epcot’s future are working to preserve all the elements that make this park so special while also evolving it to be more Disney, more family, more relevant and more timeless. Soon you’ll hear more about experiences that are uniquely Epcot – for example, the updated films coming to Future World and World Showcase, as well as new dining experiences being added to the menu of ‘the foodie park.

DISNEY: EPCOT'S ILLUMINATIONS COMING TO AN END

Illuminations Reflections of Earth will end in 2019.

The fireworks and laser show that has entertained guests at Epcot for decades is coming to end sometime in the second half of 2019, according to Walt Disney World Resort. Details are limited on the replacement but some rumors suggest that it will involve drones while others suggest it will utilize technology similar to that of World of Color at Disney’s California Adventure.

The closing of Illuminations Reflections of Earth has been anticipated as work could be seen going on in the lagoon area where the show takes place.

"... We’ve got big plans for our multi-year transformation of Epcot, with new experiences that will ‘Wow!’ guests while keeping true to the original vision of the park,” the Disney said.

Epcot is getting even more attractions including a Ratatouille ride in the France Pavilion, opening in 2021. Construction of a Guardians of the Galaxy themed roller coaster is underway near the former Universe of Energy Pavilion and that too is scheduled to open in 2021. Plus, Disney is building the Skyliner, a new gondola transportation system that will bring guests from several resort hotels to Epcot and Hollywoods Studios.

What are your thoughts on the closing of Illuminations? Sad to see it go or looking forward to something new?

EPCOT FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL ENTERTAINMENT

2018 EPCOT Food and Wine Festival Entertainment

This year, the 2018 Epcot Food and Wine Festival covers 75 days, from Aug. 30-Nov. 12, 2018, and the Disney Parks Live Entertainment team is hard at work on the Eat to the Beat Concert Series. This year the America Gardens Theater will be hosting nine new acts including 98 Degrees, MercyMe, Vertical Horizon, Glass Tiger, Sheila E. and Jim Belushi & the Sacred Hearts.

In Future World, the all-new Disney Du Jour Dance Party electrifies the Fountain View Stage on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the Festival, with great music and interactive dances and activities for kids of all ages. And every Disney Du Jour Dance Party is highlighted by a special concert appearance by an up-and-coming artist from Radio Disney.

For opening weekend, the Disney Du Jour Dance Party will feature Hollywood Records’ recording artist, IRL. The band just wrapped the first leg of the American Idol 2018 tour and will embark on their own headline tour, starting Sept. 9, 2018. You can catch IRL’s performance at Epcot Aug. 31-Sept. 1, 2018.

The Disney Du Jour Dance Party is one of several new family-friendly offerings at this year’s Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Kids can explore a new playground in Future World, participate in the Junior Chef Kitchen (Sundays in the Festival Center) and try their hand at rolling sweet sushi treats at Sunshine Seasons with Candy Sushi.

A separately ticketed event, Party for the Senses 2018, runs on select Saturdays and pays tribute to the sensory arts with a night filled with incredible food and entertainment. This year, each Party for the Senses is headlined by a performance from the incomparable Femmes of Rock. The Femmes of Rock have wowed audiences worldwide with high-energy shows, featuring classic rock hits played on electric violins.

New Attraction Opens at Epcot

I love the cultural exhibits scattered around World Showcase at Epcot. These hidden, gems are great places to escape the crowds and to just find a little peace and quiet. Among my favorites are the Morocco Pavilion and Japan Pavilion. And recently, The Stave Church Gallery in the Norway Pavilion at Epcot has been reimagined to showcase a brand-new exhibit called “Gods of the Vikings.”

Celebrating the legendary Norse gods and goddesses that inspired the ancient Vikings of Scandinavia in their daily lives, you can stop in to learn more about the popular Viking gods Thor, Odin, Freyja, and Loki through displays of authentic Viking artifacts. This exhibit can be found inside the Stave Church located right at the entrance to Norway - yes you can really go inside! Be sure to check it out on your next visit.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

During D23 Expo Japan, Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, shared details on a new attraction coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will feature a catchy theme song created especially for the attraction as well as a new experience that defies logic that we’re calling 2 ½-D. No glasses required.

On the attraction, the fun begins when Guests see the premiere of a new cartoon short with Mickey and Minnie getting ready for a picnic. As they head out, they drive alongside a train and find out that the engineer is Goofy. Then, one magical moment lets you step into the movie and on Goofy’s train for a wacky, wild ride.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will put you inside the wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short where you're the star and anything can happen.

Big Changes Coming to The American Adventure, Epcot

The American Adventure inside Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort

Disney announced some major enhancements for The American Adventure show, one of my personal favorites at Walt Disney World. The Golden Dream montage gets me every time. And speaking of the song Golden Dream, Disney has rerecorded it with new voices and a new orchestration.

Other significant enhancements include:

  • High definition digital projection technology for the screen segments of the show
  • High definition sound system throughout the theater
  • The show's finale sequence of famous Americans has been updated to include composer John Williams, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and noted ballerina Misty Copeland.

The American Adventure will re-open late February or early March.
