Quick Tour of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort | Walt Disney World
Welcome to Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, starting with the lobby you’ll notice it’s filled with authentic museum pieces, artwork, and wood carvings.
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of my favorite resort hotels at Walt Disney World, offering guests an experience like no other. Prepare to be captivated by the immersive atmosphere, incredible wildlife encounters, and award-winning dining experiences.
Welcome to Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, starting with the lobby you’ll notice it’s filled with authentic museum pieces, artwork, and wood carvings.
This one-of-a-kind hotel offers a unique experience that will transport you to Africa. You will absolutely forget that you’re in Central Florida.
Animal lovers will be delighted to know that Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is home to over 30 species of African wildlife.
Set amidst a sprawling savannah, you’ll discover giraffes, zebras, and gazelles roaming freely.
Yes, Animal Kingdom Lodge is in a remote location on Disney World property. It is sometimes criticized in guidebooks for being far away from the parks.
But that’s the point! This resort needs to be in a remote location. It needs to be relaxing and tranquil, away from Disney theming, traffic, park noise, and fireworks.
Being able to escape the theme park atmosphere while on vacation is a good thing, and only Animal Kingdom Lodge can do that.
And it’s not that far from the parks. Animal Kingdom Park is 5 minutes away by bus. Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios are about 10-15 minutes away.
I think it’s a little unfair to say that you shouldn’t stay here because it’s too far from the parks. No hotel at Disney is close to all 4 of the theme parks.
There are 2 sections to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge:
Jambo House - the primary hotel complex with a combination of standard hotel rooms and villas.
Kidani Village - the all-villa section of the resort, with no standard hotel rooms.
In this review, I’m focusing primarily on Jambo House.
Room Categories
There are 3 main room categories
Resort View - the most economical. Offering standard views of parking areas, rooftops, and/or landscaping.
Water View - overlooks the pool area. While the pool is pretty at night especially, these rooms can be noisy. Early morning power washing of the pool furniture starts around 6 am.
Savanna View - views of the wildlife safaris.
All rooms have a private balcony with 2 chairs.
One of my favorite things about this hotel is that you don’t need to book a Savanna View room to enjoy the views of the animals.
There are a number of overlooks around the hotel that anyone can enjoy.
The resort is U-shaped so there are plenty of opportunities to see the animals throughout the hotel.
If you book a Savanna View room, I recommend waking up at dawn for at least one day on your vacation, grabbing coffee, and sitting on your balcony.
The animals are very active at dawn. You’ll see the animals playing with each other and some even calling out to other animals.
Once the sun comes up, the animals begin to chill out.
A common misconception is that you need to get to Animal Kingdom Park early in the morning to see the animals.
But by the time Animal Kingdom Park opens, the animals are already done playing.
The best time to view the animals in the theme park is late afternoon, as the sun begins to set. But if you’re staying at the Lodge, pre-dawn is the absolute best time.
Standard rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge have 2 queen beds and sleep up to 4 people.
Most other Deluxe Resorts at Disney World can sleep up to 5 guests so Animal Kingdom is unique in that way (Disney’s Wilderness Lodge too).
Animal Kingdom Lodge also offers villa accommodations. These are “home away from home” rooms and villas.
Deluxe Studios are similar to a standard hotel room but include a queen bed, a pull-out sofa, and a small kitchenette.
Studios are priced comparably to standard hotel rooms and are great options especially if Standard View hotel rooms are sold out or if you prefer to have 1 bed and a sofa, instead of 2 queen beds.
Also offered are 1, 2,3, and three-bedroom units - they have a living room and kitchen with full-size appliances.
One of my favorite things about the 1, 2, and 3-bedroom villas is that have an in-room washer and dryer. This means you can pack light and do laundry in the room.
Room Layouts
Standard Room Amenities
Hair Dryer, Coffee Maker, In-room safe, Mini-refrigerator, Internet - Free WiFi Service, Telephone with voice mail, Iron & ironing board. Microwaves can be requested at no extra charge.
Club Level at Animal Kingdom Lodge
When you stay Club Level at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, you'll be greeted by a personalized check-in and luggage assistance.
But the best perk is having access to the Kilimanjaro Club Lounge. Here, you’ll enjoy continental breakfast each morning, refreshing snacks and evening hors d'oeuvres and desserts.
You can also enjoy complimentary beer, wine, water and soft drinks. Club Level guests receive an array of unparalleled benefits to enhance their stay. The dedicated Club Level concierge service is at your disposal, ensuring that every moment of your vacation is seamless and magical.
As a Club Level guest, you can also arrange Disney Minnie Van Service from Orlando International Airport (for a fee.) This service is available exclusively to CLub Level guests.
Making Room Requests
I make room requests for clients all the time and have learned a few tricks of the trade that help increases your chances of having your requests honored. But requests are never guaranteed.
Based on my client’s feedback, my room requests are honored about 80% of the time.
Tips for making room requests
It’s better to leave room requests as general as possible. The more general they are, the more likely they will be honored.
Requests for a room near the bus stop, a particular room or building, or “high floor” are viable requests and have a great chance of being honored.
I do not recommend requesting a room that is outside of your category. Free upgrades are highly unlikely because the resorts sell out nearly every night at Walt Disney World.

The Pool at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has one of the best pools on Disney property. By design, you’re surrounded by the hotel where you can see the thatched roof of the lobby, foliage and the animal savana is right there too. You can literally hoop out of the pool and see what the animals are doing.
Also nearby is a pool bar, whirlpool, and a play area for little ones.
Animal Kingdom Lodge Dining Options
Inside the resort are several restaurants, Jiko The Cooking Place has won multiple awards and specializes in African wine.
There’s also Boma, an African buffet-style restaurant. There’s also Victoria Falls Lounge and The Mara, which is the resort's quick service restaurant which is especially popular for breakfast.
Animal Kingdom Lodge Theme Park Transportation
Animal Kingdom Lodge is located just outside Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Disney Bus transportation is provided to areas of Walt Disney World.
Disney Minnie Van service is also available.
Club Level guests can book Disney Minnie Van service to/from Orlando International Airport.

New Florida Resident Ticket Offer for Walt Disney World
Disney 2-Park Explorer Ticket is a special 2-day ticket that’s valid for admission to EPCOT and Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park only. It's $159 plus tax.
Disney World has released another summer offer, this time enticing Florida residents to visit the 2 lowest-performing theme parks: Epcot and Disney’s Animal Kingdom with a decent discount.
The Offer:
Disney 2-Park Explorer Ticket is a special 2-day ticket that’s valid for admission to EPCOT and Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park only. It's $159 plus tax.
Limit one theme park per day—for a total of 2 admissions, on 2 separate days. Theme park reservations are required and are subject to availability.
Florida residents can also add Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park for $35 more plus tax. The water park visit can be on the same day as one of the theme parks or on a separate day.
Tickets and add-on options expire on September 29, 2023.
I have a feeling this is more about boosting attendance at Animal Kingdom than anything else.
To sweeten the deal, Florida Residents can also visit Epcot - the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival is currently taking place if you don’t mind the never-ending gardening project taking place in the middle of the park.
Epcot has been walled off now for 4 years. Instead of offing discounts, they need to work day and night now to get this project finished so people can enjoy the park.

Wild Africa Trek is one of the best tours available at Walt Disney World. Here are some of the highlights from my recent expedition at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
Wild Africa Trek is back at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park and my son and I were among the first to head out on the trail.
This is one of the most popular guided tours offered at Walt Disney World Resort because it allows you to get up close to the animals.
Wild Africa Trek is a three hour adventure that takes you on foot and by truck through hidden trails, suspension bridges, and scenic overlooks.
You’ll also make a stop for lunch right in the middle of the savanna and enjoy breathtaking views of the animals.
We had an amazing time on this tour, it was worth every penny and although the animals were spectacular, it was our guides that really made this tour special.
They were truly excited to take us out on the savanna. It’s obvious that they really love the animals and and doing these tours.
Below you can view some of my favorite parks of Wild Africa Trek. If you have any questions about the tour, use the comments section below, I’d be happy to answer them.

First Look: 3 New Spectaculars Coming to Walt Disney World
Disney World announced 3 new spectaculars starting October 1, 2021 plus new character cavalcade.
Beginning Oct. 1, “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” begins at the Walt Disney World Resort. Here’s a first look at just some of the 50th anniversary events coming to Orlando.
A new nighttime spectacular, “Disney Enchantment,” will help kick off the 50th anniversary festivities when it debuts Oct. 1 at Magic Kingdom Park. Created to launch with “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” this new nighttime show is designed to inspire everyone to believe in the magic, “Disney Enchantment” will feature music, enhanced lighting, stunning fireworks and, for the first time, immersive projection effects that extend from Cinderella Castle down Main Street, U.S.A.
Joining “Disney Enchantment” on Oct. 1 will be “Harmonious” at EPCOT, the largest nighttime spectacular ever created for a Disney park.
This new show will bring the globe together at World Showcase Lagoon in a celebration of Disney music that inspires people worldwide.
It’s a grand, powerful tribute to the stories and songs that unite us, embracing new technical magic that incorporates pyrotechnics, choreographed moving fountains, lighting and media in new ways.
“Harmonious” will invite Guests to travel the globe through new interpretations of classic Disney songs as you’ve never heard them before, reimagined in more than a dozen languages by a diverse group of 240 artists from around the world.
There’s also new daytime entertainment stirring at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
Check out this artist rendering of “Disney KiteTails” which will come alive several times daily at the Discovery River Amphitheater beginning Oct. 1.
Performers will fly windcatchers and kites of all shapes and sizes, while out on the water elaborate three-dimensional kites – some stretching to 30 feet long.
These colorful creations will dance through the sky to the beat of favorite Disney songs in an uplifting, vibrant experience for the whole family.
Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be the hosts for “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” and they’ll be decked out in sparkling new EARidescent fashions for the 50th anniversary.
As you can see in the photo above, their best pals want to get in on the shimmer, too, as Donald Duck and Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto, and Chip ‘n’ Dale will be sporting their own custom-made EARidescent looks beginning Oct. 1.
Guests will get a chance to see them when they travel through Magic Kingdom Park several times daily in the new “Mickey’s Celebration Cavalcade.”
Looks like Disney may stick with the Character Cavalcades rather than the parades. Personally, I like how they just spontaneously appear, it adds to the excitement.
Want to be part of the celebration? I’ll help you navigate all the big changes coming to Walt Disney World plus keep you posted as new details become available.

Disney World Updated Park Pass Reservations. Here's a Helpful Tip!
Here’s a tip for finding Disney World park reservations
You may notice that May and June Park Pass reservations for Walt Disney World just opened up slightly. This is due to a new policy Disney has implemented to help make theme park availability accessible to more people.
Has Disney increased park capacity? Not yet, though I think that’s coming soon.
Disney is now sweeping the system of cancelled package reservations.
If you had made a Walt Disney World vacation package and then later cancelled it, your theme park reservations remained in the system unless you manually went in and removed them.
Disney’s reservation system wasn’t yet smart enough to automatically cancel the park reservations along with the package cancellation.
Defunct park reservations were clogging up the system and making the parks appear to be sold out when they actually had availability.
Starting today, Disney will sweep the Park Pass system of all theme park reservations that are attached to cancelled package reservations.
Of course, if you hold tickets without a hotel reservation or have an annual pass, your park reservation will not be cancelled. The sweep only looks for park reservations that are attached to cancelled packages.
If you modify your package dates, Disney will give you 48 hours to change your Park Pass reservations to your new dates. After 24 hours, your park passes will automatically go back into inventory starting at midnight.
Disney World Park Reservation Tip
So we know that midnight is when Disney performs the sweep. If you need a park reservation and can’t get one, check early in the morning to see if any availability has been placed back into inventory. This would be your best chance of finding what you need.
There’s a lot to know about traveling to Walt Disney World these days. This is a great time to book with someone who can help you navigate all the changes and updates.

Disney World Update on Characters in the Parks
Back in 1980 something, I would go to Walt Disney World with my family often. I remember being in a competition with my sisters to spot Disney characters in the parks. Back then, characters weren’t scheduled, you had to discover them. And Mickey Mouse was the one everyone wanted to see. It was like discovering plutonium if you turned a corner and saw Mickey.
Today, Disney announced how they are going to bring Mickey and pals back to the parks during the initial reopening. I say “initial reopening” because this may change in the weeks following the reopening. Time will tell. But here’s the latest:
According to Disney, if you are hoping to see some familiar friends or take in the tunes of treasured performers, you’re in luck! Disney characters will appear in new and different ways. From special cavalcades down the Magic Kingdom Park parade route and friends sailing the waterways of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, to processions along the World Showcase promenade at EPCOT and motorcades on Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Hollywood Boulevard, each area will come to life throughout the day. You never know when a party of your pals may come by, so be prepared for plenty of surprises!
For example, after rocketing through space in Tomorrowland guests might see that famous Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear; or discover a captive Captain Jack Sparrow as they traverse the Castillo del Morro on their way to Pirates of the Caribbean. Guests could cross paths with Queen Anna and Elsa as they venture “into the unknown” on a journey around World Showcase at EPCOT or spy members of the Resistance hiding out from the First Order throughout Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.

5 Reasons You'll Love Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
For the record I’ve got nothing against the classic Disney World resorts. I’m down with Disney’s Polynesian and Contemporary Resorts, Even Yacht and Beach Club. But gosh dang it, I’m sick of seeing hard-working families toss aside one of Disney’s most beautiful hotels just because they think it’s too far from the parks. Animal Kingdom Lodge is the most unique hotel experience you’ll ever have without leaving the country and it’s right here at Walt Disney World! It’s also one of the most affordable Disney deluxe resorts, similar in price to the moderate hotels.
Here are 5 reasons to stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort.
Authentic Africa - Disney Style
From the moment you pass the gates you’re immediately transformed into a whole new world. The lush landscaping has been carefully cultivated to resemble an African savanna. And here’s a Disney secret! The planting started two years before the resort opened so it had time to grow and mature. This creates an illusion that the plants and trees have always been there.
Drive a little further and the massive thatched roof of the main lobby comes into view. At that moment you realize this is a very different kind of hotel experience.
Walking into the lobby you’ll discover rich woods, golden tones, and authentic African art throughout. There are over 380 museum-quality pieces throughout the hotel and over 4,000 handcrafted works of art in the guest rooms. A mud fireplace is always warm and giant floor-to-ceiling windows provide spectacular views of the animal savanna.
74 Acres of African Savanna
True, Animal Kingdom Lodge is remote, it’s built on 74 acres right in the middle of its own savanna. Surrounding the resort is an animal sanctuary with over 200 mammals and birds like zebra, giraffe, and impala that live authentically in the recreated African savannas.
The fact that this hotel is remote, is perhaps its very best feature!
It’s an escape from the excitement and high energy of the theme parks. Here it’s quiet, tranquil, and relaxing. Yes, it’s possible to feel relaxed on your Disney World vacation! And speaking of location, let’s not forget that it’s very close to Animal Kingdom Theme Park including Pandora World of Avatar, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Blizzard Beach.
Dining is a Culinary Journey
The signature restaurant, Jiko - The Cooking Place, is one of Florida’s most award-winning restaurants and has the most South African wines than any other restaurant in the United States.
Boma is one of the most popular restaurants at Walt Disney World - it features an open kitchen, a wood-burning grill (that smells terrific from outside) and an incredible buffet.
Victoria Falls is the mezzanine lounge that sits just above Boma and serves up specialty coffee, tea, South African vintage wines, international beers, and cocktails.
Handcrafted Rooms
Each of the lodge’s rooms features handcrafted furniture and art — much of it made in Zimbabwe.
Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of two Deluxe Resorts that offers the option of bunk beds in many of the guestrooms. Also offered throughout the resort are standard rooms with 2 queen beds or 1 king bed.
Upgraded room categories include one and two-bedroom suites and Club-level (concierge) rooms. It’s worth noting that the Club-level lounge is one of the highest-rated among all of the Walt Disney World Deluxe Resorts.
Wildlife Reserve
I know, this all sounds great but what about the animals! For the absolute best experience, try to be up just before sunrise (that’s early and you’re on vacation, but trust me it’s worth it). There are over 200 animals that live at Animal Kingdom Lodge and they become vocal and active just as the sky begins to turn brighter. And here’s a secret, you don’t need to stay in a savanna view room to enjoy views of animals. There are several outdoor overlooks around the resort with prime viewing locations. There are also several animal and authentic cultural experiences and tours that are offered exclusively to Animal Kingdom Lodge guests.
