Why Magic Bands Are Not Needed Anymore

Stop using MagicBands! They are SO 2013. Here’s everything you need to know about MagicMobile.

MagicBands were introduced in 2013 along with the MyMagic+ program, also called My Disney Experience. If you haven’t noticed, Disney likes to create multiple names for basically the same thing: Disney Genie+ / Lightning Lane and Memory Maker / PhotoPass are good examples. MagicBands were how guests entered the theme parks, opened hotel rooms, charged meals and merchandise, and entered FastPass queues.

MagicMobile vs. MagicBand at Disney World

In January of 2021 Disney began phasing out MagicBands and stopped including them for free with Disney World vacation packages. Your entire visit to Walt Disney World is managed through your phone, so there’s no need to have a separate MagicBand when your phone can do the same things, plus more.

Today, it’s rare to see someone wearing a MagicBand in the Walt Disney World theme parks.

MagicBand displays in retail stores went from taking up entire walls to just a small selection, usually near the check out line - almost like an impulse item at the grocery store. I have even found them at the Disney World outlet store here in Orlando.

Magic Bands on rack at World of Disney Store at disney springs

A very limited selection of MagicBands for sale at World of Disney, the largest Disney merchandise store in world.

On a recent visit to Disney Springs, I found only a handful MagicBands in the technology section of the store. I could get any color I wanted as long as it was army green.

World of Disney is the largest Disney store in the world.

It’s worth noting that MagicBand+ is sold at Disney Pin Traders inside Disney Springs.

So, what happened to MagicBands?

It’s not that MagicBands are bad in anyway, in fact they are neat little gadgets. It’s just that we don’t need them anymore, they're outdated.

Today most people are using their smartphones instead. Yep, your phone comes with a hidden MagicBand inside. Smartwatches too.

MagicBand tap at Disney World
MagicMobile at Walt Disney World

Your smartphone (or smartwatch) can now do everything a MagicBand does, plus more.

Disney World MagicMobile

Disney World MagicMobile uses the wallet feature in your phone. If you’ve used your phone to pay for items in a grocery store or to board a flight, you have already used your phone’s wallet technology.

If you haven’t used the your phone’s wallet feature yet, that’s ok! I’ll go over it here. Plus, Disney’s app will walk you through the setup process in just a few steps.

Using MagicMobile at Walt Disney World

  • Enter theme parks

  • Connect Disney PhotoPass (MemoryMaker) images to your account

  • Gain access to virtual queue attractions when your boarding group is called

  • Open your Disney World hotel room

  • Charge to your Disney Resort hotel folio during your stay

  • Enter theme park parking lots (complimentary for Disney resort hotel guests and Annual Passholders.)

How to set up Disney MagicMobile:

  1. Download and install the Disney World app on your phone.

  2. Set up your account by linking your package reservation number or your standalone ticket order number to your account. Note: If you have a room and ticket package, you do not need to link your tickets separately.

  3. In the app, tap the Disney MagicMobile tile.

  4. Click the plus (+) sign to begin setting up your pass or passes.

  5. The app will then guide you through the setup process one step at a time.

If you need assistance contact Disney World Internet Help at 407-WDW-HELP.

📱 TIP: If anyone in your party has their own My Disney Experience account, I recommend the lead guest use the “Select Passes to Share” tab within the app and follow the steps.

Using Your Phone to enter the Disney World theme parks

At the park entrance you’ll need to tap your phone on the tapstyle, just as you would a MagicBand. You don’t even need to have the Disney app or the wallet app open. Your phone will automatically open to the wallet when it’s tapped against the reader. It’s magical. Your phone may even play a little jingle.

If you are managing passes for others, such as children, you’ll then swipe the screen to the next pass and tap again.

Cast Members are standing by ready to assist if you need help.

Is Disney MagicMobile free?

Yes, this feature is free to all guests of Walt Disney World, even if you’re not staying on property.

What to Do If You Lose Your Mobile Phone

If you lose your mobile phone or smart device, please go to Guest Relations for assistance. Don’t worry, you’re vacation isn’t over!

Will an old MagicBand from a previous trip still work?

Yes. Disney says that MagicBands should last up to 2 years however I have several that are much older than that and they still work. Just make sure they are listed as “active” in your My Disney Experience account.

Easy Guide to Memory Maker and PhotoPass at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World photo packages explained

Walt Disney World offers a myriad of photo products to help capture your memories while on vacation. In this guide, I’ll explain the difference between Disney Memory Maker and PhotoPass plus share the different options that are available such as Capture Your Moment sessions and Magic Shots.

What is the difference between PhotoPass and Memory Maker? Great question!

PhotoPass refers to all photo and video-related products and services offered throughout Walt Disney World.

Memory Maker is the product you purchase that allows you to download your photos and videos.

Disney World Memory Maker

Memory Maker at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World PhotoPass

You’ll find Disney PhotoPass photographers throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. At select attractions and iconic park locations, Disney’s professional photographers are on hand to capture your unforgettable vacation moments with one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.

Minutes later, your pictures are ready to view in your gallery—online or on the My Disney Experience app.

To enjoy the value and convenience of downloading all your vacation photos for one price, purchase Memory Maker.

How much is Memory Maker?

Currently, the advance purchase price is $185. You can purchase Memory Maker for $210 once you arrive at Walt Disney World.

If you would like to include Memory Maker as part of your vacation package, let me know so you can get the advance purchase price.

Memory Maker Tip: If you’re traveling with friends or family who have their own reservations, you can both share one Memory Maker account. Just link your Disney accounts together using the Family and Friends tool.

Memory Maker includes unique photos taken at iconic park locations (like in front of Cinderella Castle), Magic Shots and attraction photos.

Magic Shots – A Disney World PhotoPass Exclusive

Tiny World Magic Shots - Take photos to a new dimension with this 360-degree capture experience. You can find this right in front of Spaceship Earth at Epcot.

Super Zoom Magic Shots - A burst of photos comes together as a dynamic video of you and your family in iconic locations. My favorite location is at Magic Kingdom - go to the end of Main Street USA, to the hub in front of the Castle. Turn right, heading towards Tomorrowland, and look for the photographer.

Classic & Animated Magic Shots - Enhance your photos with whimsical effects to create a magical memento.

Walt Disney World Capture your Moment Photo Sessions

This personalized 20-minute private photo session was so popular at Magic Kingdom Park and Disney's Animal Kingdom, that Capture Your Moment is now offered at EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

Disney’s Capture Your Moment is a great way to remember your:

  • Engagement

  • Honeymoon

  • Anniversary

  • Child’s Birth or Adoption

  • Birthday

  • First Walt Disney World Visit

  • Family Reunion

  • Family Portraits

  • Graduation

  • And more!

See more on Disney World’s Capture Your Moment professional photography sessions in my guide here.

Disney World Memory Maker One Day

Memory Maker One Day is available for $69 in the My Disney Experience mobile app once you’ve linked at least one Disney PhotoPass photo to your account from the day to which you plan to apply the entitlement.

You’ll also find Memory Maker One Day at Walt Disney World Resort theme park ticket windows and Disney PhotoPass Centers.

Trying to decide between Memory Maker and Memory Maker One Day?

Memory Maker is a good option if you’re visiting Walt Disney World Resort for three or more days. If you’ll be visiting for one or two days (or only attending a special event such as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party), purchasing Memory Maker One Day for each day of your visit is the better option for you.

Memory Maker One Day costs $69 per day.

Magic Shots are special photos and video that are taken of you while on select Walt Disney World attractions. And now the 13th attraction to get this feature is, of course, the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park.

Magic Shots are excellent ways for you to get even more out of your Memory Maker purchase. With Memory Maker, you can take home unlimited digital downloads of all your Disney PhotoPass photos and videos captured at more than 100 Walt Disney World Resort locations for one price.

If you purchase Memory Maker in advance, you’ll get a good discount, but you can also purchase it during your visit.

Easy Guide to MagicBand+ at Walt Disney World

What does MagicBand+ do and is it worth it?

MagicBand+ has officially arrived at Walt Disney World and comes with a number of interactive features.

As of right now it’s not replacing the standard MagicBand, those are still widely available.

MagicBand+ at Epcot

Once you get MagicBand+ you’ll need to link it to your My Disney Experience account and pair it to your phone.

This is easy, it happens almost automatically.

You can then use the My Disney Experience app to set up the colors you want MagicBand+ to display and to turn on/off the haptic vibrations - though I recommend that you leave them on to get the best experience.

You’ll also need to download the Play Disney Parks app, a free app that allows you to play games and answer trivia questions while in the parks and even at home.

MagicBand+ Interactive features

The point of MagicBand+ is that it has interactive elements that come alive while you're visiting the theme parks.

I have a feeling that this technology is only in its infancy.

Disney will likely add a number of new features in the future, but here are a few you can have fun with right now.

Disney Fab 50 Quest

As part of the Walt Disney’s World 50th Anniversary celebration there are 50 golden character statues found throughout each of the four theme parks.

Wave your MagicBand+ in front of each statue and you'll activate a short phrase or a tune.

You’ll use the Play Disney Parks app to keep track of the characters you need to unlock.

Magicband+ Fab 50 Quest at Walt Disney World
Disney World 50th Character Statues - Woody and Bo Peep

Younger children and maybe even some adults will enjoy interacting with the characters.

If you can’t find the characters, that’s ok! MagicBand+ senses when it’s near a statue and will begin to vibrate and light up.

Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters

In Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios your mission is to locate and collect hidden characters.

This is by far the most interesting of all the current MagicBand+ features.

Actually, it’s pretty much the main reason why you would want to buy one.

You start at the job board in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge where you’re assigned a bounty mission.

The job board at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is where you’re assigned your mission.

While you're on the hunt, MagicBand+ will pulse green as you get closer and red if you move further away as you explore Galaxy's Edge.

Batuu Bounty Hunter Game at Star Wars Galaxy's Edge with MagicBand+

Search for doors around StarWars Galaxy’s Edge. MagicBand+ leads you in the right direction.

MagicBand+ Batuu Bounty Hunter Game

To see if your bounty is located behind the door, tap MagicBand+ on these readers.

Batuu-bounty-hunter-game

My son, age 12, would have stayed all day playing this game. There were a lot of adults playing the game too.

Batuu Bounty Hunter Game with MagicBand+ and Play Disney Parks app

Using MagicBand+ and the Play Disney Parks app, we do a thermo scan to see if our bounty is hiding behind the door. Looks like he’s in there!

When you've located your bounty, you can use your phone via the Play Disney Parks app as a thermal scanner to capture your bounty.

Then you’ll return the bounty to an alien who will give you galactic credits.

Batuu Bounty Hunter Game at Star Wars Galaxy's Edge | Walt Disney World

Once you have located your bounty and your MagicBand+ lights up purple, look for the alien who will give you credits for completing your mission.

Nighttime Spectaculars

MagicBand+ interacts with Disney Enchantment at Magic Kingdom and Harmonious at Epcot by lighting up and occasionally vibrating during key moments of these performances.

No word yet on whether it will work with Fantasmic but if enough guests have them, it would certainly create a cool effect across the audience.

MagicBand+ during Harmonious at Epcot

It also lights up and interacts with Spaceship Earth’s light show at Epcot.

Regular MagicBand Functions

Of course MagicBand+ also functions as a traditional MagicBand so you can use it to access your theme park tickets, open your hotel room door, charge items to your Disney hotel room, link PhotoPass, and tap in for Lightning Lane.

These features work even if MagicBand+ runs out of battery.

Yes, MagicBand+ has a rechargeable battery.

A USB charger is included and it’s important to note that the battery is only 50% charged out of the box.

Battery life is decent, and should last all day on a full charge. Watch your phone battery though, if you’re using the Play Disney Parks app along with Disney Genie and Disney Genie+, you may drain the battery faster than expected.

Is MagicBand+ Worth it?

I say yes! Children will love how their band lights up during the nighttime shows and playing Batuu Bounty Hunters.

One opportunity for improvement is that it’s difficult to see MagicBand+ light up during the day. The Florida sun is bright!

You definitely need to charge it, presumably overnight. If your family has cell phones and watches that also need to charge, you may run out of USB ports in your hotel room.

If you have a USB charging hub at home, you should pack it in your luggage so you can charge all your devices at night.

MagicBand+ starts at $35 for a solid color design, but some special designs cost $45.

Regular, 2nd Generation MagicBands range in price from $12 to $35.

If you’re primarily looking for access to the parks and Lightning Lane I would skip MagicBands altogether and and use Mobile Magic.

Mobile Magic turns your phone into a MagicBand and is available for free in the My Disney Experience app. You can manage your entire family with Mobile Magic

Where to Get MagicBand+

Bands are currently available in your My Disney Experience account.

You can also purchase them through shopdisney.com or from these locations at Walt Disney World:

  • Magic Kingdom Park: Emporium

  • Epcot: Pin Traders – Camera Center

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Celebrity 5 & 10 and Tatooine Traders

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park: Discovery Trading Company

  • Disney Springs: Disney’s Pin Traders

I do not recommend you buy them from sites like eBay. According to Disney, MagicBand+ is non-transferrable. Once it’s assigned to an individual, it cannot be reassigned to someone else.

Even if the seller claims that it hasn't been used, there’s no way to verify that until you try to link it to your account.

Will my old MagicBand still work at Walt Disney World?

Yes. MagicBand+ is not replacing the regular MagicBand, at least not yet.

Features of MagicBand+

  • Customizable color-changing lights

  • Haptic vibrations let you feel the magic with light vibrations that bring experiences to life

  • Gesture recognition—your movement enables magical surprises!

Will Older MagicBands Still Work When MagicBand+ is Released?

Yes! If you have a MagicBand from a previous trip to Walt Disney World, you will be able to use it even after the newer model has been released.

You’ll be able to use older MagicBands to enter the theme parks, pay for merchandise and dining, and for Disney PhotoPass.

Disney says there’s a tiny battery inside the MagicBand that is designed to last for two years.

Some of my clients have reported that MagicBands from several years ago still worked.

I have one from 2019 that I use on a regular basis and it works just fine.

It’s also important to make sure that any older MagicBands are listed as “active” in your My Disney Experience account.

In the My Disney Experience app, to My Profile > MagicBands & Cards to see a list of active and inactive bands.

3rd Generation Magic Band Coming to Walt Disney World in 2022

MagicBand+ will arrive at Walt Disney World in 2022. Here’s how it works…

Disney World had originally announced that Magic Bands were being phased out in favor or new Smartphone technology. Today it was announced that a 3rd generation Magic Band is in the works, coming in 2022.

MagicBand+

MagicBand+

Here’s how it works

After Guests enter a theme park, MagicBand+ will come alive at various times with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations and gesture recognition.

Magic Band+ will allow Guests to engage with favorite Disney moments in new ways, including:

  • Play like a bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away and find virtual bounties throughout Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

  • Interact with the “Disney Fab 50 Character Collection,” the golden sculptures spread throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks.

  • Experience nighttime spectaculars in a new way as you see the band light up and complement the magic in the skies, including the new “Harmonious” at EPCOT and “Disney Enchantment” at Magic Kingdom Park.

Magic Band+

Magic Band+

MagicBand+ will be available for purchase beginning next year, including a discounted, pre-arrival price for Disney Resort hotel guests as well as new and renewing Walt Disney World Annual Passholders.

Current MagicBands will continue to be available, too, along with the complimentary Disney MagicMobile service that extends MagicBand features, such as park entry, to smart devices.

MagicBand+ will help immerse Guests in Disney stories and connect with characters you love like never before.

Disney World Magic Band Update for 2021

Magic Bands Won’t be Free in 2021. So, Now What?

Going to Walt Disney World in 2021? Don’t expect a complimentary Magic Band in the mail. Disney World announced earlier this year that it will no longer include Magic Bands with room reservations. So now what? According to Disney World, new features will be added to the My Disney Experience mobile app that will make the Magic Band practically unnecessary.

UPDATE December 19, 2020: Disney World provided an update regarding Magic Bands: Beginning on January 1, 2021, Guests who do not purchase a Magic Band can use a Key to the World card for hotel room entry, Theme Park entry and charging purchases to their hotel room. Key To The World cards will be provided at the Front Desk at no additional cost.

I have received a number of emails from clients who love Magic Bands and still want to use them on their upcoming trip. Good news! You still have options!

Purchase a Magic Band

Disney World isn’t discontinuing Magic Bands, yet, but they won’t be included for free with your reservation. You can purchase Magic Bands from several places like ShopDisney.com, Walt Disney World Resort retailers, and there’s even an option to purchase them in your My Disney Experience account when you link your hotel reservation. They range in price from about $12 to $35, depending on the design.

Reuse a Magic Band From a Previous Trip

Magic Bands aren’t reservation specific, they simply point to the data you have in your My Disney Experience account. So if you have a new reservation linked to your MDE account, your old Magic Band will now work on that new reservation. Magic Bands have an internal battery that generally lasts for about 15-20 months. Just be sure your Magic Band is still listed as “active” in your MDE account. Unless you manually deactivated it, chances are it’s still ready to go. You can call Disney Internet Help to verify: 407-WDW-HELP

Magic Bands can still be purchased, but they are no longer included in 2021 Resort Packages.

Magic Bands can still be purchased, but they are no longer included in 2021 Resort Packages.

Use a Complimentary Admission Card

If you don’t have an old Magic Band and prefer not to buy one, you can ask for a complimentary key card. Cards work in a similar fashion, but physically resemble a plastic credit card or driver’s license.

Will Magic Band be Necessary in 2021?

According to Disney, starting in 2021 the new mobile app will feature  innovative new offerings. We still don’t know what those are but Disney World already has so many helpful features going through the app. For example, you can place a mobile order for food, make dining reservations, view park maps, unlock your hotel room door, and scan and pay for items in a store while you shop, just to name a few. There’s even talk of Disney adding its own version of Uber Eats where you would be able to have food delivered from select Disney World restaurants.

While you might still like the idea of a Magic Band, I think Disney World is headed in a very different direction. It could be that the Magic Band becomes obsolete, and in many ways, it already is.

Military Discounts for Walt Disney World 2021 - Important Update!

2021 Military Discounts for Walt Disney World

Military discounts are now available on Walt Disney World Resort hotels and tickets. The discount is just slightly better than the Early 2021 offer available to the general public.

2021 Military Promotional Resort Room Only reservations are available at select resorts. Some exclusions are Art of Animation Little Mermaid rooms, all 3-Bedroom Villas, and campsites. You can book now for travel starting January 1, 2021 through December 17, 2021.

Spouses of military service members members also qualify if they are able to present valid and active U.S. military IDs in the absence of active or retired military personnel.

Military rates are not always the best way to go. There could be better value in other offers, especially if you need theme park tickets. Contact me and I will help you determine the best deal available for your family and travel style.

2021 Disney World military discounts are available

Walt Disney World Military Discount on Tickets:

Members of the U.S. Military can choose between a 4-day, 5-day or 6-day Disney Military Promotional Ticket. Tickets must be purchased by February 14, 2021 and can be used through September 26, 2021.

Walt Disney World Military Ticket Prices:

6-Day Military Promotional Tickets

Purchase now through December 18, 2020 (extended through February 14, 2021*)

  • With the Park Hopper Option: $301 plus tax

5-Day Military Promotional Tickets

Purchase now through December 18, 2020 (extended through February 14, 2021*)

  • With the Park Hopper Option: $283 plus tax

4-Day Military Promotional Tickets

Purchase now through December 18, 2020 (extended through February 14, 2021*)

  • With the Park Hopper Option: $265 plus tax

Park Pass Reservations and Military Tickets

Tickets can be purchased at a military base or at the Shades of Green Resort at Walt Disney World. You want to make Park Pass reservations as soon as possible so picking up your tickets at Shades of Green is risky.

Also, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to make Park Pass reservations on the same day you pick up your tickets because My Disney Experience can take up to 24 hours to update. I do not recommend waiting until you arrive at Walt Disney World to make your Park Pass reservations, you should make them as far in advance as possible.

Therefore, you may wish to purchase regular-priced tickets in 2021 and just forgo the discount. Please keep in mind that having a hotel reservation at Walt Disney World and/or theme park tickets does not guarantee admission to the parks, Park Pass reservations are still required.

Theme Park Reservations Becoming Limited

Walt Disney World Theme Parks are now reaching capacity.

To help manage attendance after reopening, all guests now have to make a reservation to visit one of the four Walt Disney World Theme Parks. Now more than ever, it’s critically important that you check the availability calendar prior to booking anything that is non-refundable, as the system is beginning to show signs of reaching capacity. One important note, you must use the Walt Disney World website, Park Pass is not available on the My Disney Experience mobile app.

Until now, theme park availability for Disney World hotel guests and day guests hasn’t been an issue. Annual Passholders are having a different experience (but that’s another article).

And for the first time [in forever] I’m now starting to see Park Pass availability reach capacity even for hotel guests and day guests. This is consistent with new bookings on the rise and more people keeping their fall reservations. It appears the tide is turning!

Here’s a look at theme park availability as of today, September 19, 2020. Yellow indicates that some parks have reached capacity. On the live website, you can click on a date to see which parks are still available.

A strange thing happened after Labor Day: there are noticeably more people in the parks, at a time when crowd levels typically drop off significantly. Wait times for attractions are longer too. 80 minutes for Test Track and 60 minutes for Peter Pan’s Flight are typical now. I think we’re ready to have FastPass again. Restaurants are busier and it’s more difficult to get a last-minute reservation. It seems more and more people are venturing out now.

There are numerous offers available for fall travel to Walt Disney World in 2020. Check them out on the Offers Page

FastPasses & Dining Reservations Now Available for June 1st & 2nd, 2020

I’ve been checking for FastPass availability over the past few days to check on some rumors of Walt Disney World opening June 1st were true. My Disney Experience showed no availability for any date in May or June.

However, I just checked again this afternoon and I was able to select FastPasses for both June 1st and June 2nd. FastPasses were showing available in each of the four Theme Parks.

My Disney Experience shows FastPass+ availability for June 1st and 2nd, 2020.

I was also able to make dining reservations for both days as well. Dining options showed available at each of the 4 parks.

Disney has not officially released a reopening date for the parks and they remain closed until further notice. However, this could potentially be a little insight into a possible reopening date. I’ll update this post if I receive any notifications from My Disney Experience.

As soon as Disney makes an official statement as to the reopening of Walt Disney World Resort, I will post it here on SaveAtWDW.com

By opting to decline housekeeping services in your room using the Service Your Way Program, you will receive an electronic Disney Gift Card based on the length of your Disney Resort hotel stay in the amount of $10 per night.

You will still be eligible to receive toiletry items and fresh towels when/if you need them by calling housekeeping on your Disney Resort hotel Guest room telephone. However, your room will not be vacuumed and your beds will not be made during your stay if you choose to use the Service Your Way.

Mobile Order Coming to Disney Resort Hotels

Soon Disney will expand its popular mobile order food service to additional restaurants at Disney Resort hotels, including: Everything POP Shopping & Dining at Disney’s Pop Century Resort, The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Contempo Café at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Mobile order is expanding to Disney Resort hotels.

Mobile order service is already being offered at Centertown Market and Spyglass Grill at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and over 20 other quick-service locations throughout the four theme parks and Disney Springs area.

I use mobile order all the time and it’s a great time saver. There is usually a little wait involved but it’s a nice feature especially during peak times.

And don’t forget, you can now redeem your meal entitlements from the Disney dining plan for meals and snacks through the service. I also notice that Disney recently introduced a new look that makes the ordering experience a lot easier.

Walt Disney World Bus Times Now Available

Wait Times for Walt Disney World Buses now in real time.

Walt Disney World Resort in Florida just introduced a new bus time feature in the My Disney Experience mobile app that enables you to view up-to-the-minute estimates for when the next bus will depart from your Disney Resort hotel and when you will arrive at your destination.

The app regularly updates in real time to provide the most current estimates for buses heading to all four theme parks, two water parks and the Disney Springs area. Guests can access this feature by tapping “See Bus Times” when viewing an active Disney Resort hotel reservation.

Currently wait times are only offered for buses departing resort hotels to theme parks, not from theme parks to hotels.

Disney released this video to demonstrate how it works

Disney World Digital Key FAQ

Disney World has announced that it will soon add a Digital Key feature to the My Disney Experience app. Initially this will be offered at Disney's Wilderness Lodge as part of a test phase but is expected to be installed at other Disney Resort hotels as well. This new feature will allow you to unlock your hotel room door using a digital key on your smartphone through the My Disney Experience mobile app.

Disney World Digital Key FAQ

What exactly is a Digital Key?

The digital key is a feature added to MyDisney Experience mobile app. You can use your phone to unlock the hotel entrance gate, hotel room doors, and most other public areas requiring a key, which may include pools, fitness centers, elevators and club level lounges. If you used Online Check In, you may even use your digital key from the moment you arrive at the hotel without having to stop at the front desk.

How does it work?

To use your digital key, activate the feature on your check-in day through a set up process in the My Disney Experience app. To enter their room, tap the “Unlock Door” button and then simply hold your phone against the door lock. See the video below...

What's the technology behind this feature?

Your phone links to the door via Bluetooth, the same way you might connect your phone to your car's audio system or wireless headphones. Once your phone and the door are linked via Bluetooth, the mobile app sends a command to unlock the door. This of course happens almost instantly.

Doesn't my Magic Band already unlock the door?

Yes. Magic Bands will continue to open doors by tapping it to the reader installed on the door.

What's so great about Digital Key if my Magic Band already unlocks doors?

Obviously there's some future technology and benefits coming that Disney hasn't shared with us yet. Being that this is only available at Wilderness Lodge suggests that it's part of a test phase.

Unofficially speaking, it would appear that Disney might offer a complete alternative to the Magic Band by allowing guests to use the mobile app instead. So perhaps plans to link Theme Park tickets and FastPasses to your smartphone could be in the works. Disneyland is already offering MaxPass, a type of upgraded FastPass service offered though it's mobile app.

Additionally, there have been some concerns from guests about having to wear a Magic Band in addition to devices they already wear such as a Fitbit, Apple Watch or similar device. Perhaps this could be an alternate option for anyone who chooses not to wear a Magic Band. This could also save Disney money if guests decline their Magic Band opting to use the mobile app instead. But this is all just speculation at this point.

Are Magic Bands being eliminated?

No. Disney has stated that Magic Bands are not going away. Not everyone has a smartphone, including children, so there still needs to be a device in place for these guests. Currently Magic Bands are still required to enter the Theme Parks, access PhotoPass, and to redeem FastPasses. If you're an off property guest (not staying at at Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you can purchase a Magic Band. Or, you'll be issued a wallet-size card at no additional charge for theme park access and FastPass redemption.

Will the door swing open by itself?

No, that would be cool though. The door simply unlocks for you.

How do I get the Digital Key on my phone?

Digital keys will be coming soon with no specific date set. Initially it will only be available to guests staying at Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort. Once it goes live, it will be an option for you within the Online Check In section of My Disney Experience. Stay tuned for updates.
