First Look: 3 New Spectaculars Coming to Walt Disney World

Disney World announced 3 new spectaculars starting October 1, 2021 plus new character cavalcade.

Beginning Oct. 1, “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” begins at the Walt Disney World Resort. Here’s a first look at just some of the 50th anniversary events coming to Orlando.

“Disney Enchantment” coming to Magic Kingdom

“Disney Enchantment” coming to Magic Kingdom

A new nighttime spectacular, “Disney Enchantment,” will help kick off the 50th anniversary festivities when it debuts Oct. 1 at Magic Kingdom Park. Created to launch with “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” this new nighttime show is designed to inspire everyone to believe in the magic, “Disney Enchantment” will feature music, enhanced lighting, stunning fireworks and, for the first time, immersive projection effects that extend from Cinderella Castle down Main Street, U.S.A.

Epcot ‘s Harmonious nighttime spectacular

Epcot ‘s Harmonious nighttime spectacular

Joining “Disney Enchantment” on Oct. 1 will be “Harmonious” at EPCOT, the largest nighttime spectacular ever created for a Disney park.

This new show will bring the globe together at World Showcase Lagoon in a celebration of Disney music that inspires people worldwide.

It’s a grand, powerful tribute to the stories and songs that unite us, embracing new technical magic that incorporates pyrotechnics, choreographed moving fountains, lighting and media in new ways.

Harmonious” will invite Guests to travel the globe through new interpretations of classic Disney songs as you’ve never heard them before, reimagined in more than a dozen languages by a diverse group of 240 artists from around the world.

“Disney KiteTails” coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park

There’s also new daytime entertainment stirring at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Check out this artist rendering of “Disney KiteTails” which will come alive several times daily at the Discovery River Amphitheater beginning Oct. 1.

Performers will fly windcatchers and kites of all shapes and sizes, while out on the water elaborate three-dimensional kites – some stretching to 30 feet long.

These colorful creations will dance through the sky to the beat of favorite Disney songs in an uplifting, vibrant experience for the whole family.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be the hosts for “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” and they’ll be decked out in sparkling new EARidescent fashions for the 50th anniversary.

As you can see in the photo above, their best pals want to get in on the shimmer, too, as Donald Duck and Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto, and Chip ‘n’ Dale will be sporting their own custom-made EARidescent looks beginning Oct. 1.

Guests will get a chance to see them when they travel through Magic Kingdom Park several times daily in the new “Mickey’s Celebration Cavalcade.”

Looks like Disney may stick with the Character Cavalcades rather than the parades. Personally, I like how they just spontaneously appear, it adds to the excitement.

Want to be part of the celebration? I’ll help you navigate all the big changes coming to Walt Disney World plus keep you posted as new details become available.

"Fireworks View Rooms" Go On Sale at Disney's Wilderness Lodge

Fireworks View rooms on sale now at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort

While Disney World has not yet announced the return of fireworks, you may notice that “Fireworks View” rooms have gone on sale starting early summer 2021 at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort.

I first reported on this in my post on April 9th. As of today, Fireworks View rooms have sold out through mid-July. I’ve booked a few for clients who were willing to roll the dice on the return of Magic Kingdom fireworks. I hope they do!

What’s interesting is that Fireworks View rooms cost quite a bit more than other room categories at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge at about $700 per night (with tax).

That’s comparable to Standard View rooms at Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Garden Wing rooms at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Fireworks View rooms at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge go on sale in early summer.

Courtyard View rooms at Wilderness Lodge were, at one time, the most expensive rooms at the hotel. But today they are about $150 less per night than Fireworks View rooms.

A little history….Fireworks View rooms were once considered Standard View, the most economical room category at Wilderness Lodge.

View from a Nature, Fireworks View room at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort | Walt Disney World

A few years ago, hotel management began optimizing the nightly rates for each room at Wilderness Lodge based on view.

Managers discovered that some rooms on the north side had a distant view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks. I would hardly call it a view because the rooms are pretty far away. You can’t even hear the music or see entire fireworks show.

Nature, Fireworks View at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Photo Credit: yourfistvisit.net

These new Fireworks View rooms suddenly became more valuable and rates were dramatically increased. Actually, they are now among the most expensive rooms at Wilderness Lodge.

A similar thing happened at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort when the least desirable rooms were given a Pirate theme. Now they are the most expensive rooms at the hotel. It doesn’t mean they are worth it, though.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Why would anyone pay more money for a Fireworks View room when there are no Magic Kingdom fireworks? That’s a good question!

In the absence of fireworks, wouldn’t that make this former Standard View room…well, Standard View again? And why is Disney charging so much more money for a view of nothing? Even more than Courtyard View?

This makes we wonder if fireworks are coming back in July. Probably not, but how else can Disney World justify charging more money?

I of course asked those questions when speaking with Disney agents on the phone. They agreed that something seems strange here.

But they gave me the official line that there have been no announcements as to when fireworks will be returning. I expected that answer, of course.

I can’t see why Disney would wait announce the return of fireworks, so I’m guessing this is just a room category that is available to book when all the other rooms have sold out at the hotel.

Disney World Updated Park Pass Reservations. Here's a Helpful Tip!

Here’s a tip for finding Disney World park reservations

You may notice that May and June Park Pass reservations for Walt Disney World just opened up slightly. This is due to a new policy Disney has implemented to help make theme park availability accessible to more people.

Walt Disney World Park Reservations

Has Disney increased park capacity? Not yet, though I think that’s coming soon.

Disney is now sweeping the system of cancelled package reservations.

If you had made a Walt Disney World vacation package and then later cancelled it, your theme park reservations remained in the system unless you manually went in and removed them.

Disney’s reservation system wasn’t yet smart enough to automatically cancel the park reservations along with the package cancellation.

Defunct park reservations were clogging up the system and making the parks appear to be sold out when they actually had availability.

Starting today, Disney will sweep the Park Pass system of all theme park reservations that are attached to cancelled package reservations.

Of course, if you hold tickets without a hotel reservation or have an annual pass, your park reservation will not be cancelled. The sweep only looks for park reservations that are attached to cancelled packages.

If you modify your package dates, Disney will give you 48 hours to change your Park Pass reservations to your new dates. After 24 hours, your park passes will automatically go back into inventory starting at midnight.

Disney World Park Reservation Tip

So we know that midnight is when Disney performs the sweep. If you need a park reservation and can’t get one, check early in the morning to see if any availability has been placed back into inventory. This would be your best chance of finding what you need.

There’s a lot to know about traveling to Walt Disney World these days. This is a great time to book with someone who can help you navigate all the changes and updates.

Magic Kingdom Being Prepped for the 50th Anniversary at Walt Disney World

Main Street Confectionary to get Magical Enhancements

Disney World shared that many areas of Magic Kingdom Park are getting prepped for the 50th Anniversary. The infamous Main Street Confectionary on Main Street USA will get a refresh along with The Chapeau (the place where you can find your favorite Mickey Ears).

The Main Street Confectionary and The Chapeau will close on March 29, 2021 for refurbishment to prepare for the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Walt Disney World starting October 1st, 2021.

These two retailers will find a temporary home on Main Street USA starting on March 29th. Disney has not shared a completion date just yet.

I also learned that several Fantasyland attractions will soon get some fresh paint and other magical enhancements to celebrate the 50th.

I do not expect any Fantasyland closures based on what Disney has shared with me.

So far, Cinderella Castle received a new paint scheme along with gold leaf and bunting. The carousel in Fantasyland is being given fresh paint as we speak.

The entrance signs to Walt Disney World and the parking booths have also been repainted with new gold and royal blue paint schemes.

The Walt Disney World Railroad - Main Street USA station is currently under renovation, I can’t wait to see how it looks when it’s finished!

We also learned that Ratatouille will open on October 1st!

Keep and eye out for more updates as Disney World ramps up for the 50th starting on October 1, 2021!

And speaking of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, I have several offers available for fall 2021 if you’d like to be there to experience it for yourself.

You’ll be able to wave and take pics of the characters while you dine. According to Disney, guests will be served platters rather than walking up to a buffet line. I like this idea better, you’re more likely to contract a foodborne illness from a buffet than from a traditional restaurant. Reservations for Hollywood and Vine - Minnie’s Halloween Dine will become available on September 11, 2020.

Minnie’s Halloween Dine at Hollywood and Vine opens with characters on Sept. 25, 2020

Disney World Update on Characters in the Parks

Back in 1980 something, I would go to Walt Disney World with my family often. I remember being in a competition with my sisters to spot Disney characters in the parks. Back then, characters weren’t scheduled, you had to discover them. And Mickey Mouse was the one everyone wanted to see. It was like discovering plutonium if you turned a corner and saw Mickey.

Today, Disney announced how they are going to bring Mickey and pals back to the parks during the initial reopening. I say “initial reopening” because this may change in the weeks following the reopening. Time will tell. But here’s the latest:

According to Disney, if you are hoping to see some familiar friends or take in the tunes of treasured performers, you’re in luck!  Disney characters will appear in new and different ways. From special cavalcades down the Magic Kingdom Park parade route and friends sailing the waterways of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, to processions along the World Showcase promenade at EPCOT and motorcades on Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Hollywood Boulevard, each area will come to life throughout the day. You never know when a party of your pals may come by, so be prepared for plenty of surprises!

For example, after rocketing through space in Tomorrowland guests might see that famous Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear; or discover a captive Captain Jack Sparrow as they traverse the Castillo del Morro on their way to Pirates of the Caribbean. Guests could cross paths with Queen Anna and Elsa as they venture “into the unknown” on a journey around World Showcase at EPCOT or spy members of the Resistance hiding out from the First Order throughout Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.

Behind the Magic: 5 Secrets of The Haunted Mansion You Probably Didn't Know

At night, keep an eye on the windows, you may notice a ghost or two passing by. Image credit: Walt Disney Co.

Everyone knows The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park is a classic and one of the most beloved attractions at Walt Disney World Resort. The 999 happy haunts have been eliciting no-so-scary chills and shrieks since Walt Disney World Resort opened on Oct. 1, 1971. But here are some insider secrets that you may not know.

  1. The Raven - Why He’s There:

In the original plans for the Haunted Mansion, the raven was going to be our narrator as we toured the attraction. It was even going to be a water ride at one point. But it was later decided to have Paul Frees be our ghost host, the voice that we hear today. You’ll still see our fine-feathered-friend four separate times throughout the ride.

We are first introduced to the raven in the stand-by queue just above the Ravenscroft organ. By the way, the graveyard in the queue area is full of references to Walt Disney Imagineers like X Atencio and Marc Davis, just read the tombstones. Thurl Ravenscroft, a voice actor also known as the original voice of Tony the Tiger for Frosted Flakes cereal, gets a little nod on the organ itself. He voices one of the singing busts in the graveyard scene in the ride, the one that resembles Walt Disney.

2. Chess Pieces on the Roof

It’s often said, especially on the Keys to the Kingdom Tour, that Imagineer Marc Davis, an avid chess player, cleverly hid chess pieces in plain sight on the roof of the Haunted Mansion as a nod to his favorite pastime. But in his book The Art of the Haunted Mansion, former Imagineer Jason Surrell writes that this was simply a design element that was popular when the Haunted Mansion would have been built. But Marc Davis is also credited for adding the scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean queue where 2 skeletal pirates are playing chess, deadlocked where neither player can make a move. No matter which version you believe, there are chess pieces on the roof, and they are hidden in plain sight. All pieces but the knight. Why? Because it’s always night at the Haunted Mansion.

3. Park Benches

There are a few park benches located just outside the Haunted Mansion. While most of us sit on a bench to rest relax for a bit, I can’t think of a bench that would make someone more uncomfortable. Look closely, the iron work is actually a serpent with red eyes.

4. The Stretching Room - are you actually going down?

Is this room actually stretching? Or is it just your imagination?

Is this room actually stretching? Or is it just your imagination?

The stretching room is one of the best special effects of any attraction at Walt Disney World. Once inside, the room begins to stretch, leaving us to wonder if we are actually moving down in an elevator, or staying put.

I believe that knowing the effects enhances the magic at Walt Disney World, helping us to appreciate the details even more. But I would hate to ruin this for anyone who doesn’t want to know. If you wish to keep this one a mystery, skip over the spoiler alert below.

Spoiler Alert!

In the Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, the show building, where the ride actually takes place , is on the other side of the Disneyland Railroad tracks. In order for guests to access the ride, they need to take an elevator down to a tunnel, under the tracks. So in Disneyland you’re actually in an elevator. But in Walt Disney World, there is no need to move guests down, so the stretching room doesn’t actually move.

Speaking of the show building, here’s another secret that is sure to impress.

5. The Show Building

Most of us assume the ride takes place inside the mansion itself but this isn’t actually the case. What we see on the outside is simply a facade. Other than the stretching room, the ride takes place in a massive warehouse-style building backstage. And while the Haunted Mansion is set in Liberty Square, it sits right along side “it’s a small world” in Fantasyland.

huanted-mansion-show-building-disney

Here’s a bonus secret: In addition to its home in the Liberty Square area at Walt Disney World Resort, The Haunted Mansion is featured at Disneyland Resort (in New Orleans Square), Tokyo Disneyland (in Fantasyland) and Disneyland Paris (known as Phantom Manor and located in Frontierland). It is the only Disney attraction to be featured in four different park “lands” worldwide.

Behind the Magic: How to Travel Through Time at Magic Kingdom

Today I have a special guest writer, my son Martin who’s in 4th grade. He has been helping with my Behind the Magic posts and wanted to share one of his favorite hidden details at the Magic Kingdom. We hope you enjoy our Behind the Magic post for today!

We have all been to Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom, but if you look very closely you can see some hidden detail that are pretty cool.

This is the Liberty Bell, over by Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square. It was made from the same mold as the original Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania.

Walking through Liberty Square towards Frontierland, you travel through time from the when the American Revolution took place to the Gold Rush era over by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. You can tell what year you’re in by reading the building numbers as you walk by.

But first, one of my favorite hidden details in Liberty Square: Look in a round brick building near Columbia Harbour House restaurant and you can see two lanterns in the window. Those are supposed to be Paul Revere ‘s famous signal.

Just outside Columbia Harbour Hous , you’ll notice a tower with two lanterns in the window.

Two lanterns remind us of Paul Revere. Remember the saying, “Two if by sea?”

As you walk toward Frontereland look up at the buildings, you can see that there are numbers on some of the buildings. But did you know the numbers are trying to tell you something? They are telling you what year you are in. If the number says 1876, it means that you are in the year 1876.

Here we see building number 1871, but it also represents the year we are in: 1876.

Look at the top of Pecos Bill, you can see 1878.

Then we get to my favorite ride, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. This is a mine train rollercoaster in Frontierland. By the time you reached Big Thunder Mountain, you traveled west from Liberty Square by the Haunted Mansion and Hall of Presidents to the Gold Rush period.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad marks the end of Frontierland at the Gold Rush period in time.

When you start at Haunted Mansion and walk towards Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, you’re walking east to west in American history.

So that’s my Disney World secret for today. I hope you can check this out when the Magic Kingdom opens.

This Disney secret has been brought to you by Darren Wittko’s son, Martin.

Behind the Magic: Go Away Green Paint

You've probably never realized this (because that’s the whole point!) but some of the no-so-pretty parts of Disney theme parks, like fire hydrants, show buildings, construction fences and some backstage areas, are all painted a lackluster shade of green known as "Go-Away-Green."

Color experts figured out that by using different shades of green paint, some objects do go unnoticed by guests. For more information on Disney using the magic of just the right color, view my post on why many of the sidewalks are stained red at Walt Disney World.

For those of you who like to use Disney colors in your home, the most common green used is Pear Cactus, made by PPG Paints. However, Disney often uses variations of Go Away Green to match a particular area.
