Back at Sea! Recap of My Post-COVID Cruise Onboard the Disney Dream

Back at sea with Disney Cruise Line! Join me as I recap my last Disney cruise onboard the Disney Dream.

Recently I had an opportunity to do a Land and Sea adventure between Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line. I specialize in helping clients plan Land and Sea vacations here in Orlando, so be sure to contact me for more information!

We began with 2 nights at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, followed by a cruise to the Bahamas onboard the Disney Dream.

Usually I like doing the cruise first because I want to have Walt Disney World to look forward to. There are advantages of doing the cruise afterwards however, like being able to relax after a touring the parks.

What follows here is a recap of my Disney cruise in a post-COVID (or nearly post-COVID) world. Aside from wearing masks indoors and social distancing, there wasn’t too much that was different.

On this trip, my son came along with me. He was not vaccinated at the time because vaccines were not yet available to 11 year olds.

Disney Cruise Line walked me through the process to show proof of vaccination.

My son had to take a COVID test 3-days prior to the cruise and show a negative test. We ordered the home-test kit from Disney for $90 and sent in the sample via overnight mail. Disney provided the overnight shipping label as part of the kit.

I tracked the entire process online, it was very easy.

Upon arriving at Port Canaveral, we all had to take a COVID test before we were even allowed to get out of the car.

We entered Level 1 of the parking garage where we were greeted by a Cast Member. She explained the testing process and directed us to an available station.

We pulled into a parking spot and a medical professional took the time to review the entire test procedure. She was very knowledgeable and made sure we were comfortable with her performing the test.

It was a light nasal swab (not the brain swab) and it took all of 5 seconds.

We were then instructed to park on Level 2 of the garage and to remain in our car. The idea is that if someone were to test positive, they wouldn’t be walking around the garage mingling with other passengers. Disney things of everything!

Results came back within 20 minutes via email. We were then able to proceed to Level 3 in the garage and exit our car. Everyone on that level has tested negative so it was safe to exit our car and head to the cruise terminal building.

Guests who arrive at the port on a Disney Cruise Line bus will follow a similar process.

If someone tests positive, Disney Cruise Line agents will work with you to make other arrangements. You won’t be left stranded at the port!

It was very reassuring to know that everyone else on board the ship tested negative for COVID and were vaccinated. i don’t know of too many places that can ensure that level of protection.

Of course this is a quick look back at our Disney Cruise. There was so much more that I didn’t get into like the Bingo tournaments, our awesome servers, the food (OMG the food!), Edge tween club, the 5K on Castaway and so much more. But I have to leave topics for my next article, so stay tuned.

Have questions about taking a Disney Cruise? Feel free to contact me . As a travel agent specializing in Disney Cruise Line, I’d be happy to help any way I can.

International Guests Can't Wait to Visit Orlando

The U.S. has reopened to travelers from around the world. Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort are ready to show them a good time!

The U.S. has officially reopened to travelers from around the world. Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort are ready to show them a good time!

British Travel to Orlando, Florida

British travelers arrive in Orlando, Florida for the first time in 19 months.

A Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom touched down in Orlando, Florida on Monday – the first time in 19 months. The flight, was completely sold out, according to Virgin.

This marks another milestone in economic recovery from the pandemic and one more way Orlando is returning to normal.

Maybe our International exchange hosts will return to Epcot, it’s not the same without them.

This is going to be very good news for Orlando’s theme parks. I am seeing pent-up demand from European travelers and I think this is contributing to Disney and Universal’s hotels being 90% sold out this holiday season.

International travelers tend to stay longer too. For example, the average Canadian resident spends about 10 days in Orlando and the average UK visitor will spend 2 weeks here, or a “fortnight” as they like to say. I love that term!

So much has been added to the theme parks in the past 19 months! There are also some safety protocols in place. If you have questions about traveling to Orlando from abroad, please feel free to comment below or contact me directly.

For the best price and best advice on your next Orlando vacation, contact me today!

Disney World Evening 'Extra Magic Hours' Announced 2021

Evening Extra Magic Hours Initial Dates Announced for Walt Disney World.

Recently we learned that guests staying at Deluxe and Deluxe Villas at Walt Disney World Resort will be able to stay in the parks longer on select mornings and select nights starting this fall.

Today I received the initial schedule for the Extended Evening Theme Park Hours, which is very similar to the now defunct “Evening Extra Magic Hours” that were once offered at Walt Disney World.

Evening Extra Magic Hours have become “Extended Evening Theme Park Hours.”

What are Extended Evening Theme Park Hours at Disney World?

During the 50th Anniversary celeration, starting October 1, 2021 and lasting for 18 months, guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resort Hotels or Disney Deluxe Villas and other select hotels can enjoy Extended Evening Hours – experiencing select attractions, shops and dining after regular park hours – in select theme parks on select nights.

Together with Early Theme Park Hours, which are available to all Disney Resort hotel guests, guests will get to arrive earlier and say later in the parks.

“..and Other Select Hotels?”

Notice how Disney has added, “and other select hotels.” I don’t know what hotels they are referring to, but this is new language and suggests that guests staying in other Disney World hotels might be able to participate.

Without perks like Disney’s Magical Express, which ends in January 2022, FastPass+, and the Disney Dining Plans (and I assume no free dining offers for a while) some of my clients are opting to stay at off property hotels, especially those that accept credit card “miles” and loyalty points.

Extended Theme Park hours is the first step in bringing back some incentive to stay on Disney World property once again.

I’m also hearing rumors that Disney World might be working on a hotel loyalty program of its own to compete with Marriott, Hilton etc.

Disney World Updated Social Distancing Policy

Disney World updates social distancing policy

Recently I shared that Florida had approved an update to social distancing from 6ft to 3ft. While Universal Orlando was quick to make the change, Disney World took a more careful approach.

disney-world-social-distancing

But it now appears that Disney World is going to make the change to 3ft. physical distancing as well.

According the Walt Disney World website, "Temporary adjustments are still in place to promote physical distancing. While we will reduce physical distancing measures for Guests across many areas with a gradual, phased approach, six-feet distancing measures will continue in all dining locations, merchandise stores and in areas where Guests can temporarily remove their masks."

What this really means is that Disney World can increase park capacity. If they cut social distancing in half, Disney can double the amount of people they allow into each theme park.

So it appears that there will be more people in the parks soon but no word on the return of FastPass.

We also know that CEO Bob Chapek is looking to make changes to Disney World’s mask requirements by this summer, in accordance with new CDC guidelines. You can read more about Chapek hinting at a mask update here.

Last week, theme park capacity has increased in all 4 Walt Disney World parks. It is now possible to remove your mask while taking photos outdoors at Walt Disney World as well.

How Disney World and Universal are Relaxing Restrictions

Disney World and Universal are beginning to make adjustments to COVID-19 restrictions as conditions improve in Central Florida.

If you have been following along with me you might have gotten the sense that some of the COVID restrictions would be changing at Walt Disney World. I also hinted that we might be getting some updates in May and June and so far that has happened at least once. Last night Disney World and Universal Orlando announced that temperature screenings would halt starting May 16, 2021.

Yours truly having my temperature checked at Disney Springs - Walt Disney World. Temperature screenings will end on May 16, 2021.

Yours truly having my temperature checked at Disney Springs - Walt Disney World. Temperature screenings will end on May 16, 2021.

Orlando officials say that temperature screenings in Central Florida are now a waste of resources when considering the current COVID data.

This is terrific news especially for Disney Springs where the lines for temperature screenings were incredibly long.

I’ve been in the parks every week since July, and I saw only one person get flagged at the temperature check. It was me!

I ran a few miles just prior to going to Epcot and then parked far away on an extremely hot August day. The heat from the parking lot got me. But I was escorted to a cooling tent and I was good to go after a few minutes. So embarrassing!

Universal Orlando Reduces Physical Distancing

Universal Orlando shared that it will reduce physical distancing to 3 feet, essentially going back to the way things were. Most people naturally provide a little space when standing in line anyway. So I’d say physical distancing is pretty much over.

But this is very significant because when the parks cut the distance in half, they can double park capacity.

The state of Florida has already granted permission for both, Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World to open at 100% capacity but neither resort has been able to do so yet. Not with a 6ft distancing mandate.

Some of the lines stretch way out into the parks in a confusing maze of switchbacks. There would be no way to manage lines at 6ft. distancing with increased capacity. The lines would snake around the theme parks.

I think Disney will go to 3ft distancing soon and that both resorts will increase capacity by summer.

Do you really think Disney World is going to kick off it’s 50th anniversary in October at 35% capacity? I highly doubt it.

Masks at Walt Disney World:

Disney has been a little more relaxed in general. Just a few months ago, if you were even just thinking about adjusting your mask, a Cast Member would instantly materialize from the bushes and tell you to wear it correctly. I don’t see that happening as much these days.

The Cast Members who were once tasked with patrolling the parks for mask compliance, while dressed as cheerleaders of course, are a rare sight now.

Masks are still very much required and 99% of the people follow the rules on their own anyway.

Disney World is now allowing guests to remove masks for photos as long as they are outside and standing still. This was a game changer and it really makes people happy.

Fireworks at the Walt Disney World?

While we have no official date on when fireworks will return, Disney World is now selling Fireworks View rooms at Wilderness Lodge beginning in early July.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney brings back fireworks for July 4th.

I have a lot of clients who are fireworks or die people and will not come to Disney World until they return. I’m sure Disney is aware of this and wants to get these going again soon. But it likely doesn’t make financial sense when parks are at 35% capacity.

But if Disney goes to 3ft. distancing, which is very likely, and then increases capacity as a result, we might have a pretty good chance of watching fireworks over Cinderella Castle once again.

Orlando Changes Social Distancing + Updates Mask Policy

Orlando

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings provided updates to Orlando’s mask and social distancing mandates and outlined a 3-phase plan as to when masks may no longer be needed.

Orlando-physical-distancing

The first phase, which starts today, calls for a change in social distancing from 6 feet to 3 feet in all settings.

Phase 2 will go into effect when 50% of Orlando’s population, age 16 and older, has received the first dose of the vaccine. Face covering mandates for outdoors will be lifted for everyone at that time.

Orlando is on track to reach Phase 2 in about 3 weeks.

Phase 3 begins when 70% of the population age 16 and older has received their first dose of the vaccine or Orlando’s 14-day rolling positivity rate is 5% or below.

In Phase 3, all mandates will be lifted. Mask buring party at my house!

Currently the positivity rate in Orlando is trending downward and is at 8%, according to Orange County officials.

I know, we’re all wondering about Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. I wouldn’t expect any big changes right away at the theme parks.

Keep in mind that Florida has given Disney World and Universal Orlando the green light to open at at 100% capacity but neither resort has done so. Disney says its parks will be at about 35% capacity through at least September. I think it will be much sooner.

It’s more likely that the parks will go to 3ft. physical distancing before dropping any mask requirements.

With 3ft physical distancing, the lines in the parks won't stretch out as far and that means they can safely increase capacity.

Of course we will have to see what happens, especially over the next few weeks. My guess is that we will have an update from at least one of the theme parks.

Disney World Updated Park Pass Reservations. Here's a Helpful Tip!

Here’s a tip for finding Disney World park reservations

You may notice that May and June Park Pass reservations for Walt Disney World just opened up slightly. This is due to a new policy Disney has implemented to help make theme park availability accessible to more people.

Walt Disney World Park Reservations

Has Disney increased park capacity? Not yet, though I think that’s coming soon.

Disney is now sweeping the system of cancelled package reservations.

If you had made a Walt Disney World vacation package and then later cancelled it, your theme park reservations remained in the system unless you manually went in and removed them.

Disney’s reservation system wasn’t yet smart enough to automatically cancel the park reservations along with the package cancellation.

Defunct park reservations were clogging up the system and making the parks appear to be sold out when they actually had availability.

Starting today, Disney will sweep the Park Pass system of all theme park reservations that are attached to cancelled package reservations.

Of course, if you hold tickets without a hotel reservation or have an annual pass, your park reservation will not be cancelled. The sweep only looks for park reservations that are attached to cancelled packages.

If you modify your package dates, Disney will give you 48 hours to change your Park Pass reservations to your new dates. After 24 hours, your park passes will automatically go back into inventory starting at midnight.

Disney World Park Reservation Tip

So we know that midnight is when Disney performs the sweep. If you need a park reservation and can’t get one, check early in the morning to see if any availability has been placed back into inventory. This would be your best chance of finding what you need.

There’s a lot to know about traveling to Walt Disney World these days. This is a great time to book with someone who can help you navigate all the changes and updates.

Two Disney World Benefits Expiring Soon

Disney World updated ticket offer and the regular cancellation policy will resume

Earlier this week I posted an an article about why I thought the Disney World Summer Offers Might Not Be Available Much Longer. As expected, Disney World just modified the 2 free ticket days offer.

Also, the flexible cancelation policy is about to expire and it doesn’t look like Disney World will be extending it this time.

partners-statue-disney

Ticket Offer Will Expire Sooner Than Expected

The new travel dates for this offer have been updated, it’s now July 4 through September 25, 2021. It was previously valid most nights from January 8, 2021 though September 25, 2021. This means the offer is now unavailable for the remainder of April and all of May and June.

Offer Expiration Date: I also learned that Disney will be pulling this offer on May 2, 2021. Want to see how much you can save? Click here and I’ll send you a quote before it expires.

When looking at the Disney World park reservation calendar, you’ll see that the theme parks are nearly at capacity through July. I’m sure this has a lot to do with the revised offer dates and the new expiration date.

The good news is that you can book travel through late September and still get the the offer. Just book by May 2, 2021.

In this article, I explore the difference between ticket offer and the spring room discount. See which offer is better.

Flexible Cancelation Policy to End

As part of the reopening process Disney World guests can modify or cancel their reservations up to the day of arrival without penalty through April 30, 2021.

This was a great idea. We didn’t want a sick person traveling to Walt Disney World just because they couldn’t get a refund on their vacation.

Staring May 1, the regular cancelation policy will take effect. If you book a package reservation, you’ll have until 30-days prior to arrival to cancel. Inside of 30-days you’ll forfeit the $200 package deposit. If you make a modification inside of 30-days to arrival that results in the package price going down, Disney may impose a $50 change fee.

On room-only reservations and Magical Vacations Travel Exclusive Offers, you have until 5-Days prior to arrival to cancel for a full refund. The cancellation policy for Walt Disney World will be outlined in your quote from me.

When you book your Disney vacation with me, you’ll have an advisor who stays current with important news that may affect your travel plans. See all the perks you’ll enjoy here.

Magic Kingdom Being Prepped for the 50th Anniversary at Walt Disney World

Main Street Confectionary to get Magical Enhancements

Disney World shared that many areas of Magic Kingdom Park are getting prepped for the 50th Anniversary. The infamous Main Street Confectionary on Main Street USA will get a refresh along with The Chapeau (the place where you can find your favorite Mickey Ears).

The Main Street Confectionary and The Chapeau will close on March 29, 2021 for refurbishment to prepare for the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Walt Disney World starting October 1st, 2021.

These two retailers will find a temporary home on Main Street USA starting on March 29th. Disney has not shared a completion date just yet.

I also learned that several Fantasyland attractions will soon get some fresh paint and other magical enhancements to celebrate the 50th.

I do not expect any Fantasyland closures based on what Disney has shared with me.

So far, Cinderella Castle received a new paint scheme along with gold leaf and bunting. The carousel in Fantasyland is being given fresh paint as we speak.

The entrance signs to Walt Disney World and the parking booths have also been repainted with new gold and royal blue paint schemes.

The Walt Disney World Railroad - Main Street USA station is currently under renovation, I can’t wait to see how it looks when it’s finished!

We also learned that Ratatouille will open on October 1st!

Keep and eye out for more updates as Disney World ramps up for the 50th starting on October 1, 2021!

And speaking of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, I have several offers available for fall 2021 if you’d like to be there to experience it for yourself.

What it’s Like to Fly to/from Orlando International Airport Today

What is it like to fly to/from Orlando International Airport these days? It’s terrific! Yes, i’m actually saying air travel is great. I don’t think I’ve ever said that before. Imagine that the airport exists only for you. It’s truly the best experience I’ve ever had flying.

Here’s a quick photo story from my recent journey on a flight from Orlando International to New Jersey.

Orlando International Airport Security check

Orlando International Airport Security check

On a typical July day here in Orlando, you could expect to see crowds of people and strollers in line waiting for the security screening. Lines average 30-45 minutes. Today, there was no wait. The entire process took less than 5 minutes.

Jetblue terminal at Orlando International Airport

Once again, I just want to reiterate that this is July…in Orlando International Airport! We had the place to ourselves. That’s some carpet, isn’t it? Only a few of the restaurants were opened, Burger King, McDonalds and Starbucks. They were minimally staffed so there were short lines.

Plenty of seating at the Jetblue terminal - Orlando International Airport

The terminal was quiet and relaxing. You could actually hear the music playing. At the gate there was plenty of seating. The entire boarding process took less than 1o minutes we left the gate ahead of schedule. It felt more like a VIP/corporate airport than Orlando International. By the way, did you know there are real fossils imprinted in the floor tile all over the airport? I didn’t either, but a Jetblue employee pointed that out to me. I’m sure it would be cost-prohibitive to do that today.

Onboard one of Jetblue’s newest planes. The blue lighting is a nice touch.

There were only 10 other people on the plane, all distanced appropriately. Not quite 6ft apart, but we were free to move and find an empty row if we wanted once we got in the air. Some passengers took the entire row to lay down. There was all the overhead luggage space you could possibly imagine. Masks are required for the entire flight except for eating. Everyone followed the rules. Jetblue made a point of telling us the air is NOT recirculated on the plane. They have fresh air intakes and they filter the air. Snacks come in a prepackaged bag with a bottle of water.

Deplaning was a breeze. We were off the plane in less than 5 minutes. That’s always the worst part for me, I can’t wait to get off once we land.

Walt Disney World Update: The Magic is Returning in Just 4 Weeks

The following is an email from Josh D'Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences & Products:

Walt Disney World will begin reopening on July 11, 2020

Walt Disney World will begin reopening on July 11, 2020

With the announcement of the proposed reopening dates for the Disneyland Resort, we are one more exciting step closer to reopening all of our Disney parks and experiences around the world.  Throughout the past few weeks, we have reopened Shanghai Disneyland, Disney Springs and several Disney stores, and set dates for both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts, with more announcements coming soon.

We are purposefully taking baby steps during this very intentional phased approach.  As one of the first major theme parks to close our operations and the last to reopen, we have been deliberate about keeping the health and safety of our cast, guests and local communities top of mind. And as we look forward to bringing our cast members back to work, and welcoming you back as cherished guests – we know it will take all of us working together responsibly to recapture the magic.

We’re fortunate to be guided by a talented team of professionals who’ve helped us implement a variety of new health and safety measures reflecting the guidance of local health and government authorities. These are designed with both the cast and guests in mind for the unique environments of each of our parks, resorts and stores.

While certain aspects of your visit may change, I assure you the quality of our storytelling, magic of our experiences and the caliber of our cast members has not. We recognize the trust that you have in the Disney brand, and we will continue to earn your trust every day.

My confidence comes in part from all of the hard work our teams have been doing behind the scenes in the past few months… as well as by the early successes we have seen at Shanghai Disneyland, the first of our theme parks to reopen. Guest satisfaction has been extremely high, and we will continue to make sure that as we bring back experiences, our attention to promoting your safety, maintaining your trust and providing unique ways for you to come together with family and friends to create new memories remains high as well.

Walt Disney once said that it takes people to make the dream a reality, and as we prepare ourselves to reopen his original park, I want you to know how eternally grateful I am for all of you who have made Disney parks, stores, hotels, cruise lines, guided tours and vacation properties part of your lives, as well as for the cast members, crew members, Imagineers, and employees who have brought them to life for the past 65 years.

I know this has been a difficult year due to the impacts of COVID-19, but I can’t help but feel a great sense of hope and optimism. And like many of you, I look forward to hearing the laughter and seeing the joy of families making memories together… and I can’t wait to see you when the magic returns to all of our parks and resorts.

Be well,
Josh D'Amaro
Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences & Products
